WMI repair : Path names too long
« on: February 27, 2020, 01:18:49 pm »
hi,
when I perform a WMI repair, the DOS window displays tons of information like "the directory name c:\xxxxxx is too long".
I know that cmd.exe will only support paths up to 256 chars.
Also, can you tell me if it's just a display issue or if the repair is not done on these long paths?
Thanks.

I don't know the cause of that but open a Command Prompt (Admin) and enter these cmds -

winmgmt /standalonehost

winmgmt /resetrepository

regsvr32 wmisvc.dll

winmgmt /resyncperf

exit

You could try running the repair program again in Safe Mode with Networking to see if you get the same error.

Let me know what happens should I need to pass this onto Shane.

Which version of Windows are you using and are you using the latest version of the repair program (4.7.1).

Thank you,
There's a bigger problem now, my computer is very very slow and I can't even open the system restore in normal mode.
I was able to run it in safe mode, but I've only been on the window "System Restore is currently initializing"  for two hours.
I hope that tomorrow it will be done and in the same state as before using tweaking.

Edit:initializing is finished ..... just now : registry restore .....wait and see

Hopefully the restore will report as successful when done, but they can take some time to run in certain circumstances.

Prior to running WR, did you perform any of the pre-steps such as a chkdsk /r or a sfc /scannow as advised ?

I'm not sure if this article applies to Win 7 but I don't think WR caused that error but simply found a directory with too long a path.
