Yes, he's still in business but usually very busy, although I didn't know there was a help line.

What is the email address you used ?

What were the error messages you were getting and which version of Windows are you using ?

Are you running the repair program in Safe Mode with Networking ?

I've removed your email address from your post as this is an open forum and you could get all sorts of crap being sent to you.

As a Moderator I can see the email address that you registered with.

See if you get any errors with the registry back up in Safe Mode with Networking.

If you do, go Start - type cmd and right click on it when it comes up and select Run as administrator then enter sfc /scannow to see what it reports.

Says Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but could not fix them.

Unable to upload  the  7 Mb log. Do you want to see it? I can upload to dropbox?

Many thanks again!

Are you using a branded machine or one which was purpose built ?

You would need a suitable Win 7 install media to resolve that error.

I have a HP Pavilion Laptop and I have the media.

What do I need to re-install?

When using other software, such as Revo Pro - it is able to back up registry!

If your install media includes SP1 then tap F12 as you switch on then use the cursor keys to select the DVD drive - insert the media and press enter.

Tap any key when prompted to boot from CD or DVD and you will be presented with an inverse screen with Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] highlighted.

Press enter and when it has loaded the files, use the dropdown to change/confirm the Time and currency format and click on Next.

On the Install screen select Repair your computer.

This will locate the partition the volume is loaded into - Next.

Select Command Prompt and enter bcdedit |find "osdevice"

For clarity that is a Pipe symbol before find and is the uppercase of \

This will confirm the partition letter.

Mine is C: so I'll use this as an example but use your partition letter if different and enter this cmd -

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows

Note the space before each /

This will check your file system against the install disk and will take a while to run.

Let me know what that reports.

If your install doesn't include SP1 then you will get an error to say it doesn't match the volume.

If that is the case, I can send you a couple of universal install disks (one spare) which covers from Basic through to Ultimate.

When you've done the offboot sfc /scannow, see what a sfc /scannow reports in normal mode and if okay, try the repair program again.

Thanks!

I just went into Regedit and exported both the branch and whole Registry  without issues!

Guess it would have reported an error if it could not? Or am I naive?

Thanks

Hugh

What was the point of that when the system is corrupt ?

Perform the offboot sfc /scannow as I've described which should repair your system and then perform another sfc /scannow in normal mode to see if it still reports corruption it is unable to repair.

It should now report no integrity violations so that you can use the repair program to back up the registry.

As we are both from the UK you should have performed that offboot sfc /scannow and the normal sfc /scannow by now, but I can't help you if you don't do what I advise.

Thanks for the update.

I've previously tried the regedit/File/Export and Import but the Import has always failed with the error that it couldn't complete because the registry was in use.

The repair program must have a way around that when you use it to restore the registry.

That is very interesting and slightly scary

What does Microsoft suggest?

Reading this article, it looks like you can use Export and Import on sections of the registry, but you can't do an en bloc Export and Import as I had tried.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/125696-export-import-registry-keys-windows.html

The repair program is obviously able to do an en bloc restore.

I always create a manual restore point before I make any changes or installing a program on a trial basis that could affect the system and I've found that it's best to boot into Safe Mode to restore from the restore point.

Spent two hours and about 50 restarts without success!

Tried to follow your procedures with Installation CD in tray before turn on and not.

If Installation CD in tray before turn on - it just boots and f12 or f8 do not stop the boot

If Installation CD NOT in tray before turn on -  f12 or f8  stop the boot.

F8 brings up the repair inverse screen but pressing enter does not repair as "error" then says put in  Installation CD in tray and reboot.

Reboot with Installation CD in tray before turn on - it just boots  very slowly and f12 or f8 do not stop the boot.

scannow issue not fixed

so 2 hrs later still the same - any ideas?

Hugh

Are you changing the boot order to boot from the DVD drive when you tap F12 as you switch on ?

When you tap F12 as you switch on, that gives you a one off option to change the boot order.

Use your cursor keys to highlight the DVD drive - insert the disk and press enter.
