When using the universal install disk, did you use the dropdown to change the time and currency to English (United Kingdom) ?

I find it strange that the bought Win 7 Pro disk would not boot and hung on the Windows logo.

Can you try that disk again.
Tom.

It did not hang up on the logo but went to dialog box so I could set UK time and currency but US keyboard.

Only on the Repair it was rejected.

I still have to try " To do this, press the Windows key and r together then type Slui 3 into the Run box and press enter." but will tomorrow.

Trying to repair a "working but with Registry issues" computer and also find time to "work"

Thanks again

Hugh

As you have clean installed Win 7 and have a valid retail key, you will not need to use Slui 3.

The product key you got with the disk will work if you have to perform a repair install on Win 7.

Have you tried the bought disk again yet - perhaps that's something to stick on your "To do" list.

Yes - tried the bought disk as well as your two discs.

Seems strange as I installed from the bought disc!

I couldn't understand that either.

I don't know why the universal disks didn't work either when they both worked fine on my Win 7 x64 Home Premium laptop.

I tested the newer ones by the same method and they also worked perfectly.

Anyway, I posted the other two disks about 10.30 this morning so hopefully you will get them by Friday.

Sorry to say that both discs had same error "... incompatible version..."

The issue is that the computer worked and "tweaking" Registry back up worked. No hardware changes - only new software. Then "tweaking" Registry back up stopped.

Looking at internet such as:

https://forum.acronis.com/forum/acronis-true-image-home-forum-older-versions/windows-7-repair-your-computer-f8-boot-option-not-working-solved#comment-96395

is this helpful as well above my pay grade? Seems to be for those who have non standard installations?

No, I don't think that applies.

I've been wondering if it's confusing Win 7 with Win 10 and causing this error as all of the disks I've sent you work perfectly on my solo Win 7 laptop.

I'm unable to replicate your set up.

I think the best bet would be to perform a repair install on your Win 7 which won't affect your personal stuff or installed programs.

Boot into Win 7 - click on Computer - insert one of the Pro disks I've sent you and double click on its drive.

This will start the process and use the product key you got with the bought disk when prompted.

This can take 2hrs or so, so you will have to pick a time when you don't need to use your machine.

This is a complete re-install?

sfc /scannow is still unhappy!

1) I downloaded regback.exe - a free software. This appeared to operate in normal and safe mode. This backed up Registry including troublesome ntusers.bak

2) Tweaking only operates in normal and NOT in safe mode. This backed up Registry excluding troublesome ntusers.dat

sfc /scannow is still unhappy!

Is the free software then incorrect???

I don't know why the repair program won't work in Safe Mode as that is the recommended mode to run it in.

It could be because of the file corruption.

I'm not familiar with that regback.exe software, so I can't comment.

I'd go for the repair install as I've described and then perform another sfc /scannow which should then report no integrity violations.

Tom

I am very wary of installing on top of existing operating system.

1) Have you done this?
2) Were there any issues?
3) Does it save all my software preferences?

Many thanks for all your help!

As I've said, I've been unable to perform it on my Win 7, possibly because I was using an universal disk but I've performed it a number of times on my Win 10 and others have successfully performed a repair install of Win 7 on this forum.

It doesn't affect personal stuff or installed programs and is a recognised repair procedure instead of a clean install when all else fails.

Dear Tom,

Sorry for the long delay. I am dithering about fixing what is not broke and puzzling over another Registry back up software which works(?).

The issue is that scannow shows errors  - but not sure how fatal these errors are.

After you have performed a sfc /scannow and it reports it is unable to repair all corruption, you can copy & paste this cmd to the prompt which will put an icon onto the desktop which shows what it has and couldn't repair, but if this was my machine then I would have performed a repair install had I been able to.

The only alternative for me as things stand would be to factory reset as it's a branded machine.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log > %userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
