Avast should be fine. Its all I run as well. Just keep java and flash up to date

As for the updates still having trouble, have you done a repair install on vista yet?

Yes you will need a disk of vista with what ever service pack you have installed. Do you have service pack 2 installed?

Hi Shane i managed to fix it last night with the code above, but with the "text" removed from the command prompt.

Can i disable updates in ALL IN ONE REPAIR, it seems to be only after running the program? This has only been happening on the last 3 versions.

Sorry i am using Free Advast, so is it still ok to run on it's own or do you think leave Malwarebytes on, both low resource machines?

Thanks again

Sorry i just wondered if it did.

I wasn't 100% clear when i mentioned about Free Advast only or is it best to have Malwarebytes as well?

Thanks again

I dont use the auto protect with malwarebytes. I only run it manually when I need to. Only scanner running at all times for me is the free version of Avast

Thanks Shane

I just use the FREE Malwarebytes, which is manual isn't it?

Does FREE Avast default to scanner running at all times?

ALL ONE RERPAIRS:
With the Vista machine to run this takes about 20-30 minutes
With the XP machine it takes about 3 hours, sometimes it stalls and ending up re running

Is this normal?

Hi Shane i have just started the computer and i got a prompt (box) on the desktop saying something like svchost couldn't be written would you like to terminate the program or debug.

The computer became very unresponsive (i tried to do a print screen).

I have rebooted after choosing the terminate option and all is ok, so far.

What could be this?

Thank you very much for your help.

As a personal opinion what do you think of Windows 8?

Windows 8 is ok, I refuse to use the tile screen thought.

This thread has pushed past 5 pages! lol

There is no need to run the Windows repair this often. You only want to run it when something is broken. It is a repair tool not a maintenance tool

Thanks Shane

Sorry about the length tf the thread, I will keep this short.

1. I just use the FREE Malwarebytes, which is manual isn't it, so doesn't take as much reosources?

2. Does FREE Avast default to scanner running at all times?

3. ALL ONE RERPAIRS:
With the Vista machine to run this takes about 20-30 minutes
With the XP machine it takes about 3 hours, sometimes it stalls and ending up re running

Is this normal?

It only takes resources when you run it, as long as it isnt running in the background. Any program running takes resources. The amount of resources is different for every program.

Yes just like any other Antivirus.

Depends what repair is taking so long. If the system is a lot slower then it could take a while.

Hi Shane it has happen again after i had run the update All In One Repair (1.9.4).

How can i fix this.

I want to get this fixed in the program, post #13 on here
http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/solved-windows-vista-stuck-in-configuring-updates-cycle-637425.html

My repair does everything but the removing of the xml file. I am thinking of adding that to the repair as well.

That would be great, i was holding back running the Repair on the Vista machine because of this, i know you have said that the repair doesn't do anything for updates but has happened x 3 times on reboot, maybe bad timing?

Something else with the XP machine when going from window to window it is very slow changing e.g. Explorer to Outlook (bottom left corner, beside START.

Thanks again
