windows explorer stopped working (windows 7)

Willy2:
- Try using another explorer. E.g. Donald Lessau's XYplorer. If the error disappers then Explorer itself is to blame.
- Does it only happen when there's one type of file in a folder ? E.g. *.mp3 files ? Then I would blame the installed (audio-)player.

You could try working your way through http://www.free-codecs.com/Microsoft_Fix_It_download.htm and http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-windows-media-player-with-fix-wmp-utility

Shane:
Most of the time when explorer crashes it is because of a 3rd party program or dll file that is doing it. A lot of things hook into explorer, such as when I have videos and I have explorer set to thumbnails it will use the codec for those file types to pull a preview, so you can see how if one of those 3rd party add ons or programs isnt working right then explorer would crash.

I myself use the k-lite codec pack and install the mega one, it is also really good at finding corrupt codecs installed on the system.

If explorer is crashing when only accessing certain file types, such as MP3s then it sounds like it might simply be a codec problem
