I have a problem (SOLVED)

(1/7) > >>

Boggin:
When trying to open a .zip file in another forum, Windows asked me which program I wanted to use.

I first went to Default Programs/Associate files and .zip wasn't in the list to assign a default program.

There was also a Google link I came across (can't find it now) that had a .zip batch file for .zip but said to right click on it and select SaveAs which didn't give me that option.

When I downloaded it, it was being saved as a text file and opened as such which meant I couldn't use the Merge option.

I've also tried the elevated cmd - cmd /c assoc zip=CompressedFolder to no avail.

Went back and got the which program do you want to use etc. and I was able to add Windows Explorer to the list but when I went to open it after that, all I got was a jumping busy which pretty much froze the computer.

I was able to open Task Manager to end the many explorer.exes and iexplorer and instead of stopping the busy, ended up with a desktop devoid of everything except this jumping busy next to the cursor arrow and had to do a power shutdown to get out of it.

It's as if Windows doesn't know what a .zip is and may be because it isn't listed in the Associate files...

I think this started following one of the factory resets and it occurs on both my Toshiba Win 7 laptops - each having had more than one factory reset each.

The last factory reset on the other machine was done with a bought Toshiba OEM disk, so should really have been pristine.

A chkdsk /f and an offboot sfc /scannow came up clean.

I want to get this resolved so that I can move on and upgrade one of the machines to Win 10, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Samson:
Default zip .reg file here. About 2/3 down the page.

Thanks Samson - that was another link I'd been looking for but still the jumping busy after merging the file.

On my other laptop now and at least I was able to delete the .zip file to stop the busy which it wouldn't do on the other laptop.

Shane:
I use 7-zip myself, it is free. I like it a heck of a lot better than the built in windows one.

Boggin:
I had installed 7-Zip but wasn't sure how to point the .zip to 7-Zip.

When I opened 7-Zip I found it had three parts and neither seemed interested.

My biggest concern is that it isn't listed in the Associated files where you can assign a default program to open them.
