Something blocks my repair - it cannot run (Windows Repair v3.3.1)

Julian:
Alright no need to give up take a deep breath is this a laptop? And if so what brand and what os do you have

Boggin:
I'm unclear which option you used in the Advanced boot options to ask it to repair itself as well as make a back up - can you elaborate on that please ?

Dorthejuul:
Computer is a laptop from Packard Bell. It runs Windows 7.

In the advanced boot option, there was an option in the "Repair computer" that offered to set to factory default but still keeping my files. I chose this option and it made a back up on c:/backup. Once it was finished it should reboot. It shuts down, starts up with "reading files" but then comes an error saying "The system configuration could not be done. If you wish to continue this configuration, you should restart the computer", and then a box with OK to click on. And then it goes on in circles - restarting - reading - error message - restarting - .....

I remember once "in the old days" you could make a "rescue disc" (3,5" disc), which is why I thought of a Win7-cd containing all the files...???

Boggin:
I think HP have a similar factory reset option that allows you to keep anything you have installed instead of wiping everything.

Are you able to boot back up into the Advanced boot options and select either Safe Mode with Command Prompt or go onto the Recovery Environment where the factory reset option is and see if Startup Repair can do anything.

If that can't do anything, on your way to the RE make a note of the Location where it says your OS is.

In the RE then select Command Prompt and see if this cmd will do anything, or you could try this cmd before Startup Repair.

This is assuming C: as where Windows sees your OS is located as it doesn't always list it as C: - it can sometimes be D:

dism /image:c:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

Enter exit to close the cmd window then Restart to see if there's any difference, but you are in no mans land when it is in the middle of a factory reset.

Dorthejuul:
Sorry, no. No matter what I do, I end up with the same error. If I try to start up with a windows 7 cd in the diskdrive, shouldn't it then be able to find the missing/broken files from there? And if it works, would my backup files on c:/backup still be there?

Boggin: What is RE?
