Microsoft Edge Only Loads Bing Search
« on: January 30, 2016, 12:53:46 pm »
I have everything in Windows 10 running perfectly with the exception of Microsoft Edge.  I have tried everything I have found online with no success.  All it does is load the Where to Next page as far as the search bar.  For ONE WEEK it loaded news from MSN.com, but now it doesn't go that far.  If I enter a URL in the search bar, it sits there for a few minutes then says "Hmmm - can't find that page.

Is anybody else having this issue?  I keep hoping AIO will add a "Repair Microsoft Edge" selection like t does "Repair Internet Explorer".  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

You could try deleting the cache etc. to see if that helps.

 http://www.thewindowsclub.com/delete-browsing-history-cookies-data-edge

There is a registry key that you can delete that will break Edge and you would use a Shell cmd to reinstall it.

While the Shell cmd in this article  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/reset-microsoft-edge-browser-to-default-settings-in-windows-10 is slightly different to the one warned about in http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/topic,3971.0.html I think it would be wise to leave any Shell get apps cmds alone.

Thanks for the response.  I have already deleted everything, including the cache.  I have completely deleted the folder that contains Edge and reinstalled to no avail.  I have even done a complete reinstall of Windows 10.  Previously, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd time I installed Windows 10, Edge did not work.  I gave up on it, then about a month ago, Edge magically started to work!.  Then, last week it stopped working again.  There were no Windows updates that had taken place and no other changes had taken place.  I even did a system restore that I had created after Edge was working to no avail.  There has to be something simple that I am not seeing . . .

Do you have your Internet location set to Public and is there anything recorded in Event Viewer for each time you try to use Edge ?

Edge doesn't like Public so it needs to be changed to Private, but as it was working and then not, then that may not be it.

From your opening post it could also be a DNS issue so changing the adapter to something like Google's 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 or OpenDNS 208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220 may improve things.

I never use public - only use private access points.  There shouldn't be a DNS issue, as all other browsers run just fine.  Edge does not work on this computer at ANY location.  For example, I am at work right now.  Edge does not work on this computer, but it DOES work on every other computer here at work . . .

By the way, in answer to your other question, there are NO errors reported in Event Viewer . .  .

Try changing the DNS servers anyway - Edge is a beast all of its own.

Well, something is stopping it.

Did a bit more digging and found that in IE - Tools - Internet options -Security - Local intranet - Sites and check the box for Automatically detect intranet network worked for some.

Edge must resolve to IE in some way, yet it's supposed to be an independent browser but even the likes of Firefox and I think Chrome use aspects of IE.

Just tried it - no dice.  That is the first suggestion anyone has offered that I hadn't already tried.  I really appreciate that you are looking into it.  To me it is like Chinese water torture - it's driving me nuts trying to figure out what is missing.

Could be worth contacting MS about it to see if they have anything new to offer.

Does Edge have any security settings like IE has ?

LOL.  Talking to MS is the reason I had to do the last clean install.  They took control of my machine, ran some
Powershells and DISM's then told me to reboot.  The darn machine would NOT boot at all.  I had to start from scratch, which meant reinstalling Window 7 pro, all the drivers and then some programs that will not install in Windows 10 and THEN migrate to Windows 10.

In other words - the thought of asking for more help from Microsoft actually frightens me . . . .

I think it's the luck of the draw as to what quality of tech you get.

Here are some settings for Edge to play with, but it looks like you can change the search engine from Bing, although it looks greyed out in the pic.

Tried changing every setting.  I am not able to change the search engine.  I am attaching screenshots of what I get when I open Edge and what the screen looks like when I try to change search engine . . .

Thanks

I was wondering if you would be able to change from Bing as it looked greyed out in my article.

It wouldn't be so bad if Edge gave you a 404 error or similar but for it to say it can't find it....

Do you use Wireless or Ethernet on this Works computer - clutching at straws here :)

At home I primarily use wireless.  Here at work I am both Ethernet AND wireless . . .

Does Win 10 have a Compatibility Mode ?

There is a compatibility mode for applications within Windows 10, but not one for the OS itself.  I don't see any way to run Edge in compatibility mode

I had meant to write - does Edge have a Compatibility Mode, but it looks like that idea has bit the dust as well.

Does Edge work in Safe Mode with Networking ?

No.  I get some kind of message that Edge doesn't work in Safe Mode - some kind of special privilege that doesn't load in Safe Mode

I hate windows apps... have you tried breaking edge by deleting this folder? C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe then open an elevated power shell and try this command and see if this does anything good or have you already tried this before?
Code: [Select]
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml" -Verbose}

Processed the update the day it was released.  No joy.  It is weird that for the first month I had Windows 10 (the most recent re-install) Edge did NOT work.  Then suddenly it DID work (no associated updates) the suddenly, a week later, Edge stopped working again with no apparent changes to the os. . . .
