Boggin:
You may want to follow this thread as I'm on a learning curve as well - although you may be able to take it from where it is.

Boggin:
I seemed to have come to a dead end on mine, but those updates in http://wu.krelay.de/en/2016-03.htm may be of help to you.

Having had a Google for your original error only gives either SURT which you've run or a repair install.

If you end up having the same amount of luck as I'm having, I'm not sure that even a factory reset would resolve.

EDIT - Mine now fixed.

Still_Game:
Thanks, Boggin, for your ideas and the handy Windows Secrets Lounge link. Early days to be sure, but downloading and installing kb 3161608 seems to have speeded up Windows Update on one of my problematic computers. I couldn't get kb 3161608 to install at first but disconnecting from the internet and then rebooting, then installing did the trick. Took a while thereafter for WU to see updates but Windows is now downloading them at last.

Boggin:
Glad they helped you - hope Curtis has equal success.

Curtis:
Unfortunately, this didn't change anything.  So I used my Lenovo Startup and Repair disk.  I don't remember really authorizing it to do anything but since then the laptop only boots to the Advanced Recovery program which will fix nothing.  Using Startup Recovery only provides results saying that this computer isn't compatible with Startup Recovery.  I do have a Lenovo Recovery disk which provides me with the options of Restore windows partition or Restore to factory settings. I'm concerned that the Restore windows partition might delete my data on the disk so I haven't used either.  When I used a Bart PE disk for startup, I got the message
error 0x0000007b (0xf78d6528, 0x00000034, 0x00000000) and suggested chkdsk /f which found no errors.  I'm able to get to the cmd prompt and see that my data is still on the HD but can't get any of it to run.
Suggestions?
