Was this machine upgraded from Win 7 as I don't see Win 8/8.1 as an option for drivers in https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-dv6-2100-entertainment-notebook-pc-series/4041735/model/4098623

Yep - the machine was a win 7 originally
When I brought the SSD unit the vendor said I could upgrade the memory (double it) if I changed the machine to 64 bit - upgraded to win10 (machine has a 64 bit processor)
It would be a major upgrade for the machine and not sure about drivers?

I'm now wondering if I upgrade to a basic desktop unit - laptop basically just sits on a desk most of the time.
I could put the new SSD in the desktop.

I checked the first 3x base systems
First one is a driver for the HHD - park heads driver
the other two are card reader drivers

Boggin:
I think most Win x64 laptops can take up to 8GB RAM.

Using a 32 bit system, then the max you would install is 4GB as Windows won't recognise more than that.

Have you tried seeing if those drivers can be updated as I've suggested ?

I think for what you could end up paying for that desktop, you could probably buy a decent laptop which these days would probably be Win 10.

peter915:
Not at home at the moment
At work
Laptop's at home
Later today - I'll do the driver upgrade.

Boggin:
Okay - I'm off to roost now as it's just after midnight here in the UK.
