Windows 7 Ult 64 bit trapped by BSD and can not get out.

It didn't used to be like that as the freebie did the job as well - I'd get rid of it.

Java and Adobe Air aren't critical but if you have Java installed then it's best to keep it up to date, but most disable Java in browsers.

You can do that by going Start - type java and select Configure Java then under the Security tab uncheck the top box and follow the prompts.

However, that box needs to be checked while you update it.

Check the drivers the way I've advised.

FreeCat:
OK, thanks, Boggin.

Drivers are up to date and still no important W7 updates --- only the 7 optional one and I am not doing anything with them unless you tell me specifically.

I am not attempting to put my w7 hdd image onto my Samsung ssd.

First I tried to just connect my ssd but on the boot "no mbr" found.  So, my conclusion is that machine is looking to boot from ssd and ssd is empty.

So then i install virgin w7 onto dds booting from distribution disc.  That went OK.  I expected the startup boot would give me the option of booting from my hdd w7, but no:  Machine only booted from ssd --- virgin w7 installation.

Then, I booted from the Reflect rescue disk and was going to restore my reflect image from a few days ago to the ssd.  But, just as I was about to begin that I realized that there were some program and data updated I did earlier that were not on that Reflect image.

Then, I disconnected the data line of the ssd (I left the power wires connected) and rebooted normal from my hdd w7.  I figured once w7 was up, I could connect the data line from the ssd and get access to write a reflect image of the current  - good  - hdd w7 onto the ssd.

But, ssd is not visible in explorer.  Is there w ay to make the SSD visible so I can do this?

The Samsung ssd is visible in the Device Manager and Disk Management as ATA Samsung SSD 860.  Please see next post.

Here is an image of status after connecting the ssd after booting from the normal w7:

FreeCat:
OK, false alarm.  I assigned a disk letter and now it is visible.  sorry to have bothered you Boggin.

I just update Reflect to v7.1.3169 and have started the Clone operation of w7 hdd to ssd.

After a few minutes I got a message from the Disk Management section of Computer Management saying "action failed to complete".  I noticed that the assigned letter of Drive K was now gone from the disk management window, BUT the reflect was still operating --- progress bar moving..  Drive K is also missing from the explorer view of all disk drives.

Overall Progress 1% and Current Progress 1% of Reflect.  So, I guess that Refect works at the raw device level and does not care about K anymore.  Hope I am right and not wasting our time here.  I will report when it be done.

Boggin:
It should put it onto the SSD however you had it set up on the HDD as it is an image of the HDD.

Is the SSD the same size as the HDD ?

When I replaced a 640GB HDD with a 1TB HDD and put the image from the 640GB onto the 1TB I ended up with about 335GB Unallocated space but because Win 10 puts a 450MB Recovery partition immediately to the right of C: I was unable to extend that to C:

I had to factory reset back to Win 7, restore with the image I'd created before I upgraded to 10 and then do it - sat through Windows Updates and then had to bring various programs back up to date and add my personal stuff back.

I then put Win 10 back on.
