Run the update: Firewall repaired but now updates not working

<< < (2/3) > >>

Shane:
All of them :-)

I test every repair on a fresh install of each version of Windows to make sure nothing breaks. But every system could have something different.

Also make sure to do a chkdsk on the drive first and then a SFC /scannow on the system before the repairs. I have those both in the steps before the repairs.

Let me know the results when your all done

Hi.. okay... before I run this again... here is some history about the 'problems'... and at the moment apart from Windows Updates not working most things are working so I can get on with 'work'... and working from home this is very important to me...

about 10 days ago - whether due to a virus/malware or error in Windows or wherever I don't know. I lost programs from being listed in my start menu and couldn't download some anti virus software like ESET or McAfee as I got the message that I didn't have administrator permissions (although I am the only user on my computer and am shown as an administrator) - the programs were in the folder on the C: drive in program folder so could start the programs just they were not showing in Start menu folders.... I gather this is or was a permissions issue virus or whatever....

I noticed that Windows updates hadn't in fact been updating since last June.. (ok don't ask.. I should have picked up on that!)

I managed to get the Windows updates working... and all updates were installed... Yay... but that Windows Firewall wasn't working and I still couldn't download and install anti virus software...

I ran your fix.. and lo and behold... Firewall working... and I managed to also install Microsoft Security Essentials... and also scanned then and before with Malaware... McAfee... ESET and although initially problems detected now clean...

finally - I use software called Expression Web which is a bit like Dreamweaver.... and when I run it.... it won't save the files and update.... BUT - the software WILL work if I run it as 'administrator'... so I think a permissions issue remains... also... I have read that the error code 8024402F (showing when Windows updates don't work) is a permissions error....

so.. what to do....

Shane:
First, turn off the UAC and the run as administrator problem will go away.

The next thing is you may still have a rootkit on the system.

Run tdsskiller.exe and malwarebytes anti root kit http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/mbar/

Let me know if they find anything

I run both of the scans and no malware found...

Shane:
Next thing to try is to run my repairs under safe mode.

Under safe mode just run the wmi, windows updates and msi repairs
