@FTR:  WR tries to manipulate three services in "Repair Firewall". But since two of them don't exist in XP, each failure to manipulate those 2 services generates the error #1060 (=the service isn't installed). But it's a non fatal error. WR doesn't care and simply continues to execute the rest of the commands needed for the repair.

The error "Le chemin d'accès spécifié est introuvable" (=path not found) is a similar non fatal error. The rest of the program code will still work and do its job.

677
@FTR:
- The error "Le chemin d'accès spécifié est introuvable" is not automatically a sign the repairs failed. It's a sign WR (v1.9.15) tries to find a (sub-)folder (e.g. "syswow64" in "Repair Internet Explorer") that, for whatever reason, doesn't exist on your computer system. If you have a 32 bit computer (e.g. XP or Vista) that folder "syswow64" never existed in the first place. WR tries to find the "syswow64" folder 128 times on your PC and fails 128 times and therefore generates 128 times an error that shows up in the log file.

In this case the value of %systemroot% doesn't matter. But I see it has proper default value.

678
@FTR: Seems your Vista system is also a 32 bits system. This errors simply show up on every 32 bits system. It has nothing to do with the %systemroot% system variable.

@FTR:
- I ran WR on my own 32 bits XP machine and the dutch equivalent of this error ("Le chemin d'accès spécifié est introuvable") showed up multiple times. So, I assume you have a 32 bits XP computer. Do you have a 32 bits XP system ? On my Win 7 64 bits system these errors don't show up.
- VSS: Ah, that's a service that's always (a little) reluctant to run properly. VSS also needs the cooperation of "Software Shadow Copy provider" service. The best remedy is to run WR's "Repair Volume Shadow copy". At least, it has helped me multiple times.
Instead of letting Task Scheduler kick Registry Backup into action, I have placed a shortcut to RB (with the appropriate switches) in one of the start up folders.

(@Shane: Watch your email in box).

- Seems you got the same systemvariable (%systemroot%) corrupted/changed, resulting in the same errors popping up as in XP. When I look in the registry on my win 7 system then the services (e.g. MSI) also needs the systemvariables %systemroot% & %windir% to be set to the default value (for me it's "c:\windows").

- The folder "c:\Tweaking.com_windows................" is the location where older WR versions used to store the logs.

- If you want to see which & how many system restore points you've created then use a program called Ccleaner. Windows (tries to) hide(s) that info as much as possible.

You may not care for Internet Explorer but when those systemvariables are corrupted/changed then other repairs don't work as well. That's why in other repairs the same error is also generated multiple times. All repairs and the OS simply depend on these 2 systemvariables (%systemroot%, %windir%) being set to the default value. Since your OS is installed in the "c:\windows" folder, both variables should be set to "c:\windows". Change the value of both systemvariables, delete the old WR log, run in WR the repairs that generated errors and attach the log to your next post.

Indeed, these two Services don't exist in XP and when WR starts looking for these services in XP then WR generates errors. Which is very confusing for novice users.

@Ka6uup: I am curious what the content is of the registry for a number of services. Download the FARBAR service tool.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-service-scanner/

1. Tick all the boxes and hit "Scan". Perhaps some of the driver files are missing.
2. Type "SharedAccess", "Wscsvc" in the "Search:" box and hit "Export Service".
Then post both results in the attachment of your next post.

@FTR:
- What's the value of the systemvariables %systemroot% & %windir% ? %systemroot% is used extensively in "Repair Internet Explorer" & "Repair MDAC/MSjet" and that systemvariable seems to be corrupted/changed. That's the reason LOTS of errors are generated in a number of repairs. It's causing the error "Le chemin d'accès spécifié est introuvable" (= french for "file/Path not found")

- In the "Repair Firewall" (pare-feu) WR tries to start/stop/manipulate three services. But of those three services two ("Mpssvc" & "BFE") don't exist in Win XP and that generates errors when this repair is run in XP.

(@Shane: I know WR detects which OS the user has. Perhaps that info could be used to skip manipulating these 2 services in XP ?)

Hi,

I have attached those files below.  Im going to try the *bat file again because i cant be sure i didn turn off norton - i think i did

I took a look at the FSS files and it seems to be OK. It also shows that the Firewall isn't running.

685
- the latest logfile shows the Windows Firewall caused error #5 (=Access Denied). Odd. because the content of the *.zip file was meant to reset the reg permissions. Did you turn off Norton before running the *.bat file ?
- I am curious what the content is of the registry for a number of services. Download the FARBAR service tool.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-service-scanner/

1. Tick the boxes "Internet Services", "Windows Firewall", "Security Center" and hit "Scan". Perhaps some of the driver files are missing.
2. Type "SharedAccess", "Mpssvc", "Wscsvc" in the "Search:" box and hit "Export Service".
Then post both results in the attachment of your next post.

Check your system date & time. It seems they're not set to the proper value(s).

It seems the Trojan has removed the ICS service. Because there're 3 ICS related errors. "ICS isn't started", "ICS could not be started" & "the service didn't report an error". It seems the Trojan also has taken out Windows Update. I made a new *.zip file (see attachment), try it out like the previous one. It resets the appropriate permissions for a number of services.

Then delete the old WR logfile, run WR with only "Restore Important Services" selected. Reboot, then run WR with only "Repair Firewall" & "Repair Windows Update" selected. If you want to post the WR log file then add it as an attachment.

687
@Pablo204: Download the file in the attachment and place it in the "files" subfolder of Windows Repair (WR). Unzip it and make sure you have 4 new files in that "files" sub-folder. Temporarily switch off Norton. Run the *.bat file with admin rights and run WR (Repair Firewall) again. Post the results in this thread. If it worked then it provides Shane (& me) a good clue of how & where WR needs to be improved.

You can switch off the MS Firewall if you want to run the Norton firewall only.
Go through this thread:
http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/topic,1195.0.html
(And make sure you tick "Set Services to default ........" every time you run WR)

@Shane:
- The *.bat file changes the reg permissions for "Sharedaccess", "Mpssvc", "BFE" & "Bits". But I thought BITS had nothing to do with the MS Firewall ?
- Go through the stuff I have sent you. It contains these "change reg permissions" files as well.

The repair only takes 5 seconds and that's (way) too fast.

There's a file called "mdac.txt" in the "files" subfolder of Windows Repair. Open the file and check how many of the files are present on your system.

@Ronald: does reply #28 in this thread

Not the answer I was hoping for but it - at least - removes one question mark.

- If I had to move from Vista to Win 7 then I would simply do a fresh Win 7 install and get rid of all Vista rubbish.
- It's possible to reduce the winsxs subfolder:

@Rick: I am waiting for an answer from Ka6uup

@Ka6uup: I have one more question. do you have a file called "c:\windows\system32\ipnathlp.dll" ? The Firewall in XP ("Sharedaccess") needs this file. If you don't, you can copy the file from the "C:\windows\system32\dllcache" directory.

General Computer Support / Re: System Restore
« on: August 01, 2013, 02:28:57 pm »
Windows System Restore (SR) normally takes a number of minutes (not hours) on my Win 7 system. SR is a wonderful tool if it works but it also can be a nightmare. Instead I would install & use Tweaking's Registry Backup. It can be set to back up (as the name suggests) the registry everytime upon start up. It works much better than SR and is less prone to malfunctioning. Although it won't harm if you make additional SR points. Better safe than sorry.

694
- Did you run "Repair System Files", "Reset registry permissions" & "Reset file permissions" as well ? perhaps running other repairs will fix the problem.
- When you run "Repair Internet Explorer" then it registers a list of files, including "mshtml.dll". But perhaps that file is missing ? I don't use IE 10 (I use IE 9 instead) so I can't tell you which files should be present in your system. Does the internet provide an answer which files should registered ?
- The word "renders" reminds of something else. Is there a file called "vgx.dll" in one of the "c:\program files\commonprogram files\" or "c:\program files(x86)\commonprogram files" subfolders ?

Windows Repair doesn't touch Windows Security Essentials.

When an installation fails I do the following:
- Make a backup of the registry (e.g. Tweaking's Registry Backup)
- Run REVO uninstaller. Even the free version is GOOD.
- Clean the registry with EUSING's (FREE) registry cleaner (A thourough but trustworthy program) and CCleaner.
- Sometimes I go through the registry to manually clean the registry.
- Make a registry backup with Registry Backup.
- Try to re-install the program.

When you already have an AV program running then you can disable WinDefender. Disable WinDefender & try again.

- What kind of Windows & Internet Explorer do you use ?
- Did you run Windows Repair ? With the "Repair IE" box ticked ?

699
@SoxxBoxx:
- How many files does the folder "c:\program files\windefender" and/or "c:\program files (x86)\windefender" contain ? And which files ?
- Unzip the folder in the attachment and place the files in the "files" subfolder of WR. Run the *.bat file. Perhaps it will repair WinDefender.

If this helps you then it give us a good indication how WR can be improved.

@Ka6uup: I found another reason why your firewall may be corrupted. Unzip the files in the attachment, place the files in the "files" subfolder of WR, run the *.bat file with admin rights. Perhaps now your "unidentified error" is solved.
