General Computer Support / Windows has detected an IP address conflict
« on: October 21, 2019, 02:45:51 pm »
Hi - I get this message.  I do not know why.  Machine seems to operate OK - sometimes a tad slow.
See attached message and event viewer.
What is it and how can I resolve it.  Thanks.

Hi - No sure what cause this but I need to fix it.  I was just going to run Tweaking but realize I know nothing about which switches to check.

Background:  Story:  The other day my entire NT8 folder under Administor user disappeared.  If might have been right after a W7 update.

I did a install of Malware bytes, but after the restore the computer would only boot to a blank screen; I could move and see the mouse, but that is all excpet for the icon you installed whichmonitors CPU temperature.  No Task bar.  I trieed several types of rebooting:  last known config, etc.  Nothing changed anything.

Then, I remembered a note oI read f trying the safe mode.  I did that an got a desktop.  Then I rebooted and uninstalled Malware bytes and rebooted again normally and desktop came up, but the machine only fully worked in the normal Potye user (and the NT8 directory was restored!).  I don't care about NT8 anymoe; I just want to be able to rename files and create folders.

So, I am using it only as that user, BUT I can not rename any folders on C or any of the NAS.  I can create folders and files but no re-naming.

Hi - You guys helped me some time ago with W7 crashing on this machine.  Thanks for that.

Now, the machine has not had that problem but recently the mouse (or maybe it is explorer.exe) freezes the system.
What I mean is that the mouse and keyboard become unresponsive and whatever programs are funning just stop processing.

I installed a new Logitch driver and Setpoint thingie, but they have not helped the situation.

Sometimes, I notice it when I I grab  window to move it to another part of the screen.

Or, sometimes when I select some text in a window to copy it.

It drives me nuts as I loose work that I need., plus wastes time, etc.

I reboot and then is it good for a day sometimes several days, but I have no idea what is causing it.

My W7 is up tto date with updates.  Thanks in advance for any ehlp.

Hi - This is a machine I had in "mothballs" for a while.  I performed all the updates and they seemed to go well.  Before the last update, I had a printer connected by USB and my MAS connected by cat 6 through my NetGear router.

But, now those are no longer accessible.  I have attached an image which describes the situation.
What could be wrong here?

5
Howdy,

I have a vanilla W7 that has worked on my LAN and INTERNET at a NY location.  I have moved to a FL location and the machine connects to my LAN (via my new NetGear INTERNET HUB) but I can not get a browser going.  Yet I have another machine that I moved that does connect to the INTERNET.

What should I look for to determine the problem?  Thanks in advance.

Hi - I am trying to use Windows backup to write an image.  I have an internal HDD of 2TB that is empty and I can write and read it, but the windows backup says "Windows Backup said "Drive H is not connected"  However it is clearly present as seen in Windows explorer and in Disk Management app; I can read and write to it.

BTW, I just found a backup program QILING Disk Master and it seems to recognize the H drive and is not doing the backup.  BTW, I tried AOMEI (paid pro version) and kept getting a 4098.

FWIW, the QILING program did not impress me.  No verification possible.  Uncompressed image was too small.  I have since tried EASEUS home which is free and has the verify and made a decent sized image.

I have given up on the idea of using Windows backup as I have read so many bad things about it.  But, I do feel there is some basic error in my system with H not being recognized by MS but is recognized by QILING and EASUS.

Sorry that this is in all caps here, but wrote it on friend's laptop that kept going into CAPS.

I  really, really need this machine for work.
I do have a backup but it is over three months old and I did a lot of work on machine since then (stopped running as I ran out os space as it needs 1.5TB space on my NAS to run backup and did not get another drive yet.

Howdy,

I have certain programs that I totally trust (like irfanview, and a few other utilities) that I would like to add to some kind of a list that says "don't ssk for these programs."    I have read a lot about people saying they can do this but the only thing I have come up isth is MS APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY MANAGEMENT which need SQL server and does not clearly say it can do this.

There must be some registry tweak or some place I can put program excluded from this security question.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Howdy Shane,

I use AOMEI Backuperupper to backup system on my machine; have used it for years.  Works fine.  I even restored full system from it.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit - SP1 latest update on Dell T7500 with 64 GB RAM using 2 AMD W7000 graphics cards with 8 Dell WP2407 monitors on Seagate 2 TB C Hybrid SS drive.

But, I ran the latest Tweaking (following all instructions like:  Safe mode, power off, etc. and now the AOMEI program hangs.  The first time it was right at the beginning; this first time, it hung right after I moved the AOMEI flash screen to another monitor.  The second time, AOMEI went to 31% complete and I did not move the flash screen but I did touch the app with my mouse to see settings.

Both of these times machine seemed to be completely hung insofar as moving the mouse all over the desktop, the mouse was not able to call up the task bar or any other application.  I let the AOMEI sit for a while (first time for 7 hours and the second time for 3 hours) with no change in AOMEI progress or desktop response.

Also, through this hang and could move the mouse and the keyboard was connect as the CAPS LOCK worked but not the Windows key.

Shane, what would you suggest I do to get around this.  I really need this backup and do not know what to change to un-tweak.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

God Bless,
FreeCat

I was told "You need professional help."

Howdy Shane,

I have a computer that I depend on for my work and it has a latency problem.  I will pay you to do your best to help me fix it.

email address and phone number removed by Moderator

Here is how I descirbed the problem and Boggin's reply:

I have a latency problem and the event viewer shows me that I have to disable the LSO (large Send Offload) on my Netgear A6210.  Maybe there are more things.  Many errors in the event viewer. Some are related to not being able to start a priner device; I have not printers directly attached to this PC --- only a network printer.  Should I deleted all those printers that are there?  (Where did they come from anyway).  But, i want to start with disabling LSO as from what I read that could be the cause.  Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Here are some of the errors from the event viewer:

I've never used a Netgear so that LSO may be peculiar to that.

I was getting DHCP-Client Event ID 1002 with a similar message to yours and I suspected it to be a router fault where DHCP wasn't assigning IP addresses as it should.

I would get this event ID on three different machines after booting up.

Generally you can ignore it but in Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices - expand Network adapters where you'll probably see incremented MS ISATAP adapters.

You can right click on the incremented ones and select Delete, although they'll probably just be recreated when Windows is initially unable to make a connection - but they can mount up if not kept an eye on.

My router was an ISP supplied one so not sure if a firmware update would have solved that, but there may be a firmware update available for your Netgear model - that's usually the first step if you think a router isn't performing as it should, but save the current config before upgrading so that you can revert if an upgrade is problematic.

I also get a Printer error when my printer isn't switched on before I boot the laptop - see if you still get it with your printer switched on before the computer.

As for the rest, run a command prompt as an administrator and enter sfc /scannow to see what that reports.

If it reports there are files that it cannot repair, then download SFCFix.exe from http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/sfcfix.html

This will produce its own report and may fix what sfc /scannow was unable to.

If it reports it is also unable to fix then copy & paste and post its report.

To determine if you are using the correct MTU setting, download TCP Optimizer - select Save then right click on it in your Downloads folder and select Run as administrator.

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

Both the router and computer MTU setting should be set to 1500 before you start.

To check your computer, run a command prompt as an administrator and enter -

netsh interface ipv4 show interfaces

This will give an Idx No. for each interface.

1500 is usually the computer's default setting, but should you need to change it to what Optimizer recommends then enter this command for your wireless and Ethernet.

netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface [Idx No.] mtu=[recommended] store=persistent (without the brackets)

e.g. For my wireless interface I would enter netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface 5 mtu=1492 store=persistent as 1492 has previously been given for my connection and 5 is the Idx No. for that interface.

Then redo the netsh show interfaces cmd to confirm.

Howdy - I have a Dell Precision T7500 using two AMD W7000 video cards (not the best choice of video card, I know).  I cloned the Win 7 64 bit and placed the clone in a Dell Precision 690.  From the sound of the hard drive on booting, the 690 seems to have booted but without video.

At first I had an AMD 2450 Firepro in the 690 and with that card I saw the boot-up posting, memory testing, etc. but still a blank screen after booting.

Next, I put in the AMD W7000 card (this is the card that was originally in the T7500 so the video drivers are set for W7000) and still I get a blank screen after booting; but another observation:  With the W7000 (trying all 4 spigots) the monitor ON LIGHT is blinking which normally means the monitor is not connected to a card.  This did not happen with the AMD 2450 Firepro video card.

Next, I tried one of those USB to monitor devices (which normally works on other machines and did once work on this 690) and still I get blank screen and a blinking monitor light meaning (to me) no monitor connection.

I thank you in advance and I would greatly appreciate ANY suggestions, other than I should kill myself.  :)

For instance are there ANY video cards that always work or is there a way around this?

General Computer Support / W7 ERRORS ON SLEEP AND HIBER WAKEUP
« on: July 03, 2013, 07:03:15 am »
First, I want to thank Shane and the members of this community for all the work and help you have offered to me in the past.

This is not a dead-in-the-water problem, but I would really like to get it fixed:  When I shutdown the system wakes up fine.  But on sleep or hibernation, the system comes up with "not normal shutdown" message.

I have attached a zip file some screen prints and some error files.  I could have put many more prints and dumps, but they are all pretty much the same so I have sent only two.

Detail:  On waking from sleep or hibernation there is always boot mechanism that says system shutdown not normal, etc.  Plus, of course, I have lost all the stuff that I had open (not lost the data but the windows, positions, etc.) so I now feel I can never shut my machine off or make itslep/hiber.

This happened somewhat under IE8 and I did not want to upgrade to IE9, but the messages whener I used IE8 were alsmot impossible ("safe content warning alsmot every time I moved themouse).  Under IE9 safe-content message only once when I go on to a page.  This is not the problem, I am just mentioning it as this sleep/hiber challenge seems to occur more since IE9.

Hope you and your family will have a great 4th of July.

When doing the image backup to my blank D drive I see (at the beginning - before I start) that the window says that programs will not be backed up.

Yet, on MS site it says "Back up your programs, system settings, and files" at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-your-programs-system-settings-and-files.

Any know from direct experience?  Thanks.

I noticed this about two weeks ago and I am not sure what was installed at that time as I was busy with other stuff.  I very much miss "Explore" as an option in W7, but now to loose it in my stall worth XP machine is sad and very inconvenient.  Any ideas on how to get it back would be appreciated.  Machine has all service packs and updates (XP pro 32 bit).  Thanks.

Howdy - OK, I have a need/dislike relationship with MS Windows, and I see there is so much more to explore out there in computer-world and applications-world.

I need MSW for some software vendors I use. This handful of vendors will NEVER convert away from MSW.

I dislike MSW due to the rat's nest of code that it is --- with problems that take weeks and months to fix even with paid support from people who can't really know it all. I am not going to say anything about the vulnerability of the OS or MS apps. I am not going to say anything about the mismanaged, micro-managed, top-down run organization or about the overcharging for products or about the pointed headed ownership's progressive politics that thinks it knows how to run your life better than you. These things would be irrelevant to my point. MSW is very dis-likable by itself.

The real point is that, although I have purposely kept my head in the sand for a long time, I have taken it of the sand for a breath every couple of years to be aware that there is a big, beautiful world of Linux (and other environs) out there that I must explore. To do this I must loose Bill's heavy Mother's Club, Lakeview shackles that limit and bind me while keeping a thin tether-line to those apps that can only breath MSW air.

Here is my half hatched plan: My current Dell Precision has W7U-64b and a good deal of installed software that I really do not want to install again (will take months). Dell is better on support than most with limited problems and decent support.

Side note: Until about 10 years ago I would only use a machine if I "built" it --- bought all the best CPUs and stuff and put it together --- "my" machine. lol. But, I got tired of all the spec changes, part availability with new CPUs and gizmos changing all the time; it was exhausting! I switched to a pre-made and supported machine and was able to get work done instead of being having my head in a machine most of the day. HP might have been just as good, but I choose Dell and I am sticking with them. Plus: Support in the US from US speaking people that I can understand without slowing them down all the time.

Back to my plan: I just bought a Precision T7500 with dual quad 5570 chips at 2.9 GH, 64 GB RAM, 4 2TB Hitachi Deskstars and two graphics cards to support 8 monitors. This will be called my "new" machine. Yes, the T7500 is a few years old, but to get a brand new box with a dubious 20% improvement and this amount of RAM would have cost 500% more dollaros-bearos.

Current machine: W7U64b with the c and d drives as RAID1 so each has only 2 TB. C only has W7 and d is for backup. No data on C --- only OS and programs; all data on NAS, things inadvertently placed on desktop are swept into NAS as night to save housekeeping.

I had been using the MSW backup (c drive OS and programs is about 435 GB so the d could take a cycle of 4 backups to the d drive), but about a month ago I tried the Acronis image backup for about a hundred bucks; but, so far the restoring to a boot-able 5th drive that I added for the test has not worked; so I may not stick with Acronis. Plus, there may be some other things wrong with Acronis and my plan which I will get to later.

I have not yet installed W7U64b on my new machine yet, as I want to work out and desk-check-test that my plan is solid using some older machines that I have around. For instande. I may replace the c drive with a SSHD (hybrid) which has 8GB of solid state memory. Right now it is about $120 for a 1 TB. Might improve speed a good deal. It arrived today and is waiting in the box for me to develop my plan further.

So, where is the "away from MSW" world I was talking about?

In Summary, a base linux with VirtualBox running W7 (maybe several) and a main linux OS (maybe several) with ALL the MS Office-like software than runs in linux --- plus every other product that I can use that runs on linux (transferring data from W7.

In looking over the possibilities, I have picked SUSE Linux (not sure about the open version --- paid version sounds better with support since --- today --- I know zero about Linux).

On that SUSE, I am planning to put VirtualBox. And, on that VB I am planning to put my main W7U64b and XP and SUSE plus another other OS that I want to play with or explore.

And, on one of these Linux instantiations I intend to put an entire suite of office and desktop tools and pick the best ones to wean me off of MS Office and all the other MS dependent apps that I have.

OK, that's the plan. Poke holes in it it you will. Any suggestions are welcome. I am open to learn where my thinking is "weird". Right now I am still trying to get SUSE installed.

I intend to post my progress and the main things I learn here.

Hi Shane - How I found you:  OMG used your program to fix my W7-64b-ultimate did some things to fix firewall, .NET, etc -  - And all seemed to work fine for about 6 weeks on the W7.

[This problem I am about to describe, I believe has nothing to do with what OMG did, as the same problem showed up on another machine which OMG had nothing to do with.  I have a small environment of several Synology NAS, about 8 XP machines, one W2011 Home Server, and two W7 machines.  - Of course, I have read through (several times) the other thread on your side called:   "Execute processes remotely has stopped working"]

Then, on 5-27 after a reboot this machine could no longer connect to the INTERNET.  It has Malware-bytes anti-virus.  I had not rebooted this box for about two weeks and the only weird software that I installed the week before was something that needed the latest version of iTunes so I installed iTunes also at that time.  I have since done a full virus scan and uninsulated both iTunes and the program that needed iTunes.

Yet, I can not connect to the INTERNET and I can not "run to the finish" your tweaking programs.

Funny coincidence.  I have another box that uses W7-32b-home-premium and several weeks before the problem with the big box, the W7-32b-home-premium not connect to the INTERNET AND no Tweaking tools would work there either.  Yes did the vscan and tested cable for both boxes up to the cable that goes into them with a third machine that connects fine.

Another hint.  I use a program called Ensign Windows (7 day free trial available at www.ensignsoftware.com and he has a program that normally connects to the INTERNET (but does not NEED the INTERNET) but that will not run on either box.  I called him and he is mystified.  He said it would work if you are connected or not.

Another hint:  When I go into W firewall on either machine I get the message "Update your Firewall settings - Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to protect your computer"  And, there is a button there to "Use recommended settings."  When this is pressed, there is an hourglass for about a minute but then, the hourglass goes away and nothing has changed.

If I try Advanced Firewall settings I get "There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in."  The Windows Firewall can not be turnjed on or off, either.

These above anomalies happened the same on both machines.

Also, on both machines, when I run the Tweaking AIO each process seems to execute for a while (each process starts and I see a command windows open and a log stream in the windows) but near the "end(?)" I get the feared  "Execute processes remotely has stopped working."

Also, on both machines, simple stuff like Aieesoft DVDxxx programs (which never have any problems) are not working on either machine: "Execute processes remotely has stopped working"

HELP!  I am a free cat trapped inside a box with no windows to the INTERNET :).

General Computer Support / XP 32 bit NTLDR missing
« on: April 11, 2013, 08:20:46 pm »
Hi - I have an old Dell 9100 which works fine with 4GB ram and on MB RAID1 SATA with two 750GB Deskstar drives.  Machine and XP work fine, except that after 6 months I got the NTLDR missing message.  I used the Hiren repair disc to boot and that's fine.  But, the Hiren disc does not repair the issue.  Hiren just boots and allows me to get XP going from the hard drive.  Is there some fix I can use.  I made a repair disk when I installed XP but did not have a place to put a system image so I do not have one.  Any suggestions on how I can get rid of this dependence on the Hiren disc for booting?  Thanks much.
