"But I dont think you have a virus. You emailed me the contents of the notepad and it was a virus."

Huh?

As for www.av-comparatives.org they last tested performance tested MSE in December of 2010 using version 1.0  Hardly a reliable resource in October of 2011.  It flies right through a scan on my machine and uses hardly any resources at all.  It has saved me many many times on customer machines when other AVs have failed miserably.  I don't like the AVs that use cloud technology - too many things can go wrong and leave the machine wide open for infection.

"Well I guess I think I do, and I am a pc tech"

That was not aimed at anyone in particular, especially not you.

Bad spelling on my part, should say "wasn't" a virus. I need more coffee.

Take a look at the Aug 2011 results
http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_od_aug2011.pdf

As for what AV to use it came down to a few things. I was using MS. But when it causes the system to slow down I had to dump it. I did a ton of test on it to confirm.
Avira went the toolbar route and I dumped them. Avast is bloated but has a fast scanner, and AVG is a joke (See false positive results)

In the Agu 2011 detection test they did MS had a 92.3 % rate while Panda had a 99.3% Both panda and MS only had 1 false positive. And panda had a faster scanner.

There hasn't been a SINGLE AV on a machine I didn't have to clean a virus off of. So I don't care which a customer users. I want it to stay out of the way, be free and not slow the system down. MS does all of this but the last. it does slow things down.

We are getting off topic here :-)

"However, they simply do not know what they are talking about (even though they think they do)"

Well I guess I think I do, and I am a pc tech

I use to put MS security essentials on my customers machines. But MS has the slower scanner on the market so it caused programs to take up to 5 sec or more longer to open because you where waiting for it to scan.
http://www.av-comparatives.org/

So I started putting the free Panda cloud Online and it has a better detect rate, same low false positives as MS and a faster scanner.

Malwarebytes is a good scanner to run as well.

But I dont think you have a virus. You emailed me the contents of the notepad and it wasn't a virus.

Go to start then run and put in msconfig

There check the startup tab and tell me what you have :-)
A screen shot of the tab might be even better.

Looks like the file was made by www.pcspeedup.com

By why it got put in your startup I dont know.

All you need to do is remove it from startup.

You also never answered my question

"First go to the start button, all programs and then the startup folder. What do you have in there? (The startup folder)"

Notepad? Thats odd, the program doesn't touch notepad.

I have a feeling it is something simple :-)

First go to the start button, all programs and then the startup folder. What do you have in there?

Going to be starting a new program soon. An advanced system tweaking tool. Where all the tweaks will be add in's that people can make themselves :-)

Going to be a pretty nice program I think, lots of work ahead and lots of testing it will need :-)

Same buttons in the program as was in CleanMem.

I have updated the buttons and will put out a new version later today which will fix the crash on you :-)

I started a new thread for you instead of posting in someone elses thread :-)

Easiest way for me to see what you are talking about is for you to take a screen shot.

So get it to where it is not fitting on the screen for you. Then do this.

Hit the prtscr (Print screen) button on your keyboard.

Now open paint, go to edit then paste.

Save the picture as a jpg or png and attach it to a post here.

With that screen I can see what your talking about and tell you how to fix it

I am off to take my kids to be breakfast. I will be back in a bit.

Sounds like bad timing with something else. My program doesn't touch the startup folder or have a single line of code that would make a folder called AutorunsDisabled.

What could of happened is the folder in the startup could have been put there by another program and was marked hidden. So when my unhide non system files ran it unhid the folder, and you started seeing it.

I made the unhide repair because there is a virus out there that hides every single file on a persons system. That repair gets all the files back to normal :-)

Glad your all fixed.

This isnt from my repair windows tool, this is just a folder in your startup folder

Go to your start menu, go to all programs then go to start up. In there you will see the AutorunsDisabled, just right click on it and hit delete.

Your all done

Thanks, I replied :-)

Why do I feel like I am going to have to defend this program just like I had to defend CleanMem?

Easy to do. Just put some code over the mouse over event to say if the repairs are going then skip this.

Done :-)

1. about those MS-DOS (cmd.exe) windows and those ""secret formulas"" : I personally wouldn't mind if that remained ""below the radar"". Or is this meant to see where problems occur ? (Does cmd.exe report such errors ? Doesn't cmd.exe close the window automatically when an error occurs ?) If so, then perhaps it's a good idea to let WR generate a logfile everytime WR runs. Windows is a VERY complicated system and then perhaps a logfile would help you to see where things go ""off the rails"". What do other users think ?

Not a lot of ways to record any errors, plus I like having the windows show for multiple reasons.
1. Users can see whats going on, and so can I.
2. People can report errors if they see any.
3. People will know the program isnt locked up and how far a repair is (The permissions repair is a good example.

Quote
2. Would you appreciate it when I put out an message on the Piriform forum that you would like to have more testers for WR ? Do you like to have more test users ? Or do you get already enough responses/feed back ? I use XP and my opinion is therefore not too relevant. Better to have more Vista and Win7 users/testers, wouldn't you think so ?

The more the better. I want this app to grow into something great. And I can only do that with the help of others.
I have a plan for this program. The point of the program is to help those people out there who can't afford to have their computers fixed. And to help make some repairs even simpler for my fellow techs :-)

3. About the ""sidebar"" thing: is this something I can find in XP ? Or is this something related to Vista or Win7 ? (as metioned above I still use XP). If it's not included in XP then perhaps you could make it platform dependent or is that too much work ? I never had that ""internet security"" warning before. I thought an virus or something else had penetrated my firewall.

I am going to remove the reg key being deleted. If a person needs the security reset that can do that in internet options. better not to mess with it. v1.4.1 will be out on monday :-)

I made the unhide feature because a few of my customers got a virus that hid every file on the drive. So I made that :-)

There are a few tricks to getting the network to work correctly again, I have had to do them on a few machines. It is basically uninstalling the network card, then going through the reg and removing all traces of it. Then after a reboot Windows should put everything back.

Wish I still had how I did it handy, it was a while ago.

Missing reg keys.
Reinstall was your best option

While I want to add as many repairs as possible to my repair program I have to stay away from it adding reg keys. To many differences in peoples systems. And you go changing reg keys and your asking from trouble :-)

I own and run a computer repair business as well, so since your a fellow tech feel free to hit me up on anything you need. The more ideas I get the more I can add to my program :-D

I wonder if I should create a section where the services reg keys for each version of windows might be helpful?

1. Perhaps you could lock the moving arrow as soon as the user hits "Start"" and unlock the moving arrow as soon as the program has finished its repair jobs ?
I could do 2 arrows. One showing the current repair that is going and the 2nd showing what you mouse over.

Quote
2. I selected Basic Mode and hit ""Start"". Then as WR started working then a number of what I would call MS-DOS windows (cmd.exe) opened. After having finished these windows also closed again. Is this supposed to happen ? Is this normal ?
I did this on purpose. My program mimics repairs and does a lot of them through a command window, I want people to be able to see the progress of the repair :-)

Quote
3. IE 8 was running when I ran WR (Basic mode). After I finished WR, suddenly at the top of the screen a message appeared that asked/recommended that I should set the, what I would call the internet security level back to normal (average ?). It seems that WR resets the security level down to the lowest level possible. Perhaps WR could remember the previous security level and restore it back to that level. Or did I do something wrong because I didn't restart my laptop inmediately ?

The Fix sidebar repair removes the zone settings in the registry, which will put the IE security back to default. I was going to remove this, but found that if a person has their security messed up then this is a good fix for it.

Perhaps these remarks could lead to an improved WR v1.4.x or WR v1.5.0 ? No need to rush it with a new version.
Already working on v1.4.1. Adding more fixes and such. Expect a LOT of updates with this program.

Just as I posted here :-)

Lets see if we can get this fixed, and if possible add the fix my Windows repair tool :-)

Can you post any screen shots of any error messages?

Shane

7868
I would like to get the red x fixed so I can add the fix to the program.

I am also curious on the program as well. Can you find out what process name it has in the task manager?

Shane

7869
Try this. Download the attached txt file.

In the windows repair folder you will see a files folder. In that folder is a txt file like the one you downloaded from this post. Replace that file with the one you downloaded.

I added a few more files that deal with the network icon to it.

Now start the windows repair, click unselect all and choose only the register system files repair.

once done reboot and let me know how it goes

Shane

7870
Are you on vista 32 or 64 bit?

Shane

7871
I dont know on the cable modem program never seen that before.

I have a vista test machine here, let me unreg that file and see if I can get the red x.

Also when you reg the file did it say it was successful?

Shane

7872
Just fixed a computer at one of my customers.

Windows 7 and nothing mmc wise would open. Computer manager, task scheduler none of those. Would give a class not registered.
Also the network icon showed a red X even though the internet worked. Also couldn't list any adapters.

Found the fix, and I will be adding it to the next version of the repair program :-)

Its amazing how 1 file can screw things up. Try this, open a command window and put in

regsvr32 mmcndmgr.dll

After I did that every problem I listed was fixed. That file is not in my repair tool for the register system files, but I will be adding it :-D

v1.4.0 is out, make sure to update :-)

Tweaking.com - Windows Repair (All in One) v1.4.0
http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html

v1.4.0
Removed the custom buttons from the program. It was causing the program to crash on some systems. Program is meant to repair, not look pretty, so ugly standard safe buttons it is :-)
Add new repair "Repair Windows Sidebar/Gadgets"
Changed the window size of the repair window, making it smaller and easier to fit on screen for smaller resolutions.
More code tweaks.

Shane

7875
Should be fixed now in v1.4.0 :-)
