Hi, Samson The link you gave directed to some web pages on some other language which i could not decipher

Yeah know it's en francais
But if you look at the post 2nd from the bottom of the page that I linked to, there is an english translation, and a helpful screenshot.

Hi jraju,

It seems others have the same problem as you, see this thread on the Audacity forum. http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=72405&p=212903&hilit=microphone+win+7#p212903

A work around seems to be under Preferences:Devices Changing the interface Host to Windows WASAPI instead of MME, may be worth a try for you? Or wait and see what feedback you get on the Audacity forum to your problem.

The "Creative Soundblaster" entry is specific to my machine, that is my default soundcard. The screenshots that I have posted are to illustrate the locations where you should be looking for your soundcard.

I do not think this is a driver issue, as you have sound. It is a hardware configuration issue. I am not familiar with Win 7, but you need to find options in your advanced sound settings options for playback/ recording and enable microphone and adjust levels accordingly.

Have you looked in the dropdown menu for "Stereo Mix" ? See attached screenshot.

Webmail? Avast does not scan webmail, the Mail Shield only works if you use an email client.

So no blue waveform graphic means you have no input sound to record. Check in your advanced settings on your audio card that the mic/ line in is not muted or the level is too low and that you select the appropriate input within Audacity, as shown below, you may also need to adjust the input level using the slider control too..

If all else fails, then head over to the Audacity forum, http://forum.audacityteam.org/  They are a very helpful, and friendly bunch, I'm sure you'll get answers there. Good luck.

Hi jraju,

I use Audacity a lot, maybe I can help you?

You say that you have recorded successfully, and presumably have a nice waveform graphic to show that? If yes, then I would check that you have chosen the correct playback device for Audacity to use, ie your current sound card?

I have highlighted where you change this in the attached screenshot. Hope that helps you out.

Everything Else / Budget tech
« on: May 06, 2013, 11:56:17 am »
A topic open for your best budget tech deals.

Here's one to open up with. Today at a Car Boot Sale (I guess the equivalent in the USA would be a Yard Sale?) I picked up a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse along with a Cisco wireless network USB adapter, both new and sealed in the boxes for a total of £2 Happy days! You've gotta love a bargain   :cheesy:

Everything Else / Word Game?

Hi Shane,

I was wondering when your Word Game was coming out. But I've been over to the Tweaking.Com facebook page and see that you have more than enough to keep you busy, now and in the future

Best wishes to you and your growing family.

Looks fine. In fact compared to most Antiviruses Avast uses the least amount of memory and 32mb of memory is dang good :-)

Shane

+1 For Avast, with only 512Mb RAM every MB counts
I have attached a screenshot of my Task Manager  :cheesy: Of course CleanMem and Simple System Tweaker help
I even allow myself the luxury of a little "Eye Candy" and use the Zune theme  :shy:

Hi Shane,

We have a winner  :cheesy:

I used your simple internet meter lite and tested with a 100MB+ size file....For my card the best setting is to have Flow Control set to "Off"

Thank you for your help, advice and yet another great little program, and another "tweak" that has helped me to wring a bit more speed from my lowly set up

I have let a few of my friends know about your simple internet meter lite, as some of them are on monthly download limits from their ISPs and this will help monitor their usage and prevent them going over their limits. I am on an unlimited (fair usage applies) download contract so no problem there for me.

Thanks again, enjoy your weekend.

Hi Shane,

Initial results show no discernible difference between "Off" and "Generate and respond". I will continue to experiment over the next few days and see where I am then, thanks again Shane.

General Computer Support / Flow control?
« on: March 14, 2013, 12:46:24 pm »
Hi Shane,

Just a quickie

I was reading your tips for network adapters and enabling "Flow Control".
I have an Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection. Under "Flow Control" settings I have the following options:

Generate
Generate and Respond
Off
Respond

Which of these would you recommend, presumably not "off ", so which of the remaining options should I use?

Thanks, Samson.

Hi Roy,

Good to know That I'm not alone in the "antique" PC world

Take a look on Freecycle http://www.uk.freecycle.org/  Maybe post a "wanted"? I've picked up loads of really useful bits and pieces there that people are only too glad to find a new home. Both my machines are recycled and so too are all the internal upgrades in them, and thanks to Shane's great work both run lean, clean and stable

Feedback & Suggestions / Registry Compressor

Hi Shane,

Registry Compressor, another nice, simple to use tool that does the job  :cheesy:
Every little helps on older machines like mine, the aggregation of marginal
gains and all that

Thank you.

Feedback & Suggestions / Repair Hosts File
« on: February 26, 2013, 12:56:10 pm »
Hi Shane,

I decided to live without the MVPS hosts file. I use Avast, Firefox with Adblock Plus (EasyList and Malware Domains subscriptions), MBAM (free on demand), Norton ConnectSafe DNS and Sandboxie. So figured that MVPS Hosts was maybe a bit over the top, but was uncertain how to get rid of it and reset the hosts file back to default.

The obvious and simplest answer was right here, your "Repair Hosts File" tool did the job  :cheesy:

Thank you.

Are you sure that the files have been deleted? Or are they in the Virus Chest? If the latter then they can be recovered. Similar problem to yours here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=111615.0

Yup, gotcha, I do use a couple of small USB drives (one each for the kids, a blue one and a pink one, sexist I know, but we know whose is whose that way  :cheesy:)

There is a parcel under our tree right now that I think may well be a 500GB external drive, but we don't want to spoil the magic do we

Thanks again my friend.

Update:  Both machines now have a 2nd HDD installed and I have backed up the master drive on each. I feel alot better knowing that the kids' schoolwork is safe and secure for the future. I also created a small partition at the start of each 2nd HDD for the page file. Again I am grateful for your help and advice Shane,

Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.

Hi Shane,

Thanks again, just wanted to check first  :shy:

I was looking at Macrium Reflect (free edition) and/or Acronis True Image (seagate edition), I'll give it a go on the weekend.

Hi Shane,

Thanks for that.

One final question (on this topic anyway )

If I image a disk, and then want to restore that image to a new HDD, will it be bootable?

General Computer Support / Image or clone?
« on: November 30, 2012, 11:27:54 am »
Hi Shane,

Just got given a couple of HDDs, have installed one in each of my machines (see sig below), both as slave drives. Formatted both and they are healthy. As a backup would you recommend imaging the master drive or cloning it?

Feedback & Suggestions / Hats off to Shane
« on: November 09, 2012, 01:40:53 pm »
Hi Shane,

Not been on here for a while, so thought I'd drop by and say "Hi" and "Thanks again"....Both my old machines (one the kids use for schoolwork...the other I use) are running sweet thanks to your great software and helpful advice, long may they continue.

A friend of mine called over and used the guest account on my old celeron machine to check his emails, he was laughing at how old it was, but 10 minutes later he said it was snappier and nicer to use than his modern machine (probably full of bloatware ). So I sent him away with the links for Simple System Tweaker and CleanMem, so you've got another convert.

Enjoy your weekend,

Everything Else / Re: DNS Cache
« on: September 19, 2012, 11:41:31 am »
It was the same servers Norton connectsafe (DNS). set on the router, the only difference in "before/ after" was disabling DNS client service....I just can't figure it, but it works fine, better than before  :cheesy: So I think I'll just stick with it for now.

Thanks Shane.
