Tweaking.com Support & Help / edit schedule
« on: July 07, 2012, 08:08:12 am »
I'm sorry to send two emails but I could edit before this new version and now that it takes one to the task scheduler I think you will loses average people like me.
I don't understand it. It is drifting away from the simple neat program it was for all to the one for more advanced users. I don't think the average user can handle the task scheduler but could use the version prior to this. I think some of the suggestions are leading to complexity but away from the average guy.
If I remove this 1.2.1 and install the previous one will there be any security risks or functionality problems?
Thanx again
Peter

Tweaking.com Support & Help / updatte 1.2.1

Hello Shane
Should I leave  the defaults as they are with a check in the box, like - change backup locations?
If I get it right, unchecking would keep it in one location which is good.
Thank you

Hello
I ran the tests at Gibson Labs and all was good. I then ran the firewall test which is separate and the leak got through saying I had no firewall.
I have the firewall at default right now because I cnnot understand settings.
I have avoided other firewalls as I read there are compatibility issues with third party ones.
Are there any suggestions that would make the firewall more secure?
Thank you

General Computer Support / VMware fails
« on: June 23, 2012, 03:19:14 pm »
Hello
I was trying to install VMware with the help of an advisor in another foum.
below is his response;

>>The path in the error message does not correspond  with my pc.

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\VMware. I think the \VMware step in yours - \Temp - is the directory used during installation. After installation that step is replaced by \VMware

So where exactly is AppData in your setup?

P.S.  I know you separately backup your registry rather than backing up the entire system. Unless you are very clear about the possible consequences of this then if not done absolutely correctly it can lead to the system being in an inconsistent state, which yours appears to be. I'm not saying this is the reason for your current problem, but it just may be.

Do you think he is referring to Tweak's backup causing an unstable path?

Please see the attachment . I have tried several times. Perhaps this attachment means something to you or you have a fix for it.
Thank you

PS I noticed the first attachment was not legible so I have loaded a second one hoping it would be better.

General Computer Support / password
« on: June 13, 2012, 06:54:26 am »
When I created a schedule it asked for a password. I entered my sign on one and it said it did not match. I then canceled and the schedule remained.
1-is the schedule going to work anyway?
2-what password is it looking for to match?
Thank you

General Computer Support / guest account
« on: June 12, 2012, 03:26:13 pm »

When I enter my documents from a thumb drive into my admin account, then go to guest they are there also.
When I delete the guest documents they are also removed from my admin account. The lap top is not like that. What I do in the admin account does not go to the guest account in the lap. I need to make the two accounts not related without disabling the guest acccount..
I am sorry if this overlpas with another message but after the duplicate dpwnloads by Windows, I used Acronis so nothing has been downloaded.

Unfortunately as I look at Windows it wants to download 32 updates which would be back where i started from. Aren't there just 16 of them? Why am I prompted to install 32 now?

General Computer Support / win updates doubled
« on: June 12, 2012, 01:04:35 pm »

Windows updates finished and looked strange like the guest acccount. I lost my documents but have them on removable media. I used tweak reg backup to do it again properly, or go back to before the updates occured. However, the updates were still there and windows insisted on installing them again no matter how many times I rebooted, scanned updates etc.
I know have duplicates = 32 instead of 16 updates and all say successful.
What should I  do if anything.
Thank you.

Tweaking.com Support & Help / good and ?
« on: June 09, 2012, 05:45:50 am »

I made an error and this new reg backup fixed the error immediately.
I had gone to services.msc and changed the vsc to start and lost my restore points -This is what the registry backup fixed as all my points and configutation are fine.

However, I set my program too 'startup' on both the laptop and desktop but this am when I booted then signed in, it did not backup at startup. I could try logon but why didn't startup work.
What am  doing wrong?
Thank you

My pcs volume shadow copy are set to started and manual. In Win 7 is this the default or apprppriate way to set them?

Will this conflict with my tweaking.com registry backup regardless of how I set if I use settings at all?

I just noticed my laptop has current usage as zero bytes and the configuration was 'off'.
Could this be due to installation of the twaeking.com registry backup?
Thank you

Tweaking.com Support & Help / registry backup
« on: June 07, 2012, 09:50:20 am »
Hello
I installed the registry backup and have two questions;
1-I left the default button 'run under current user account',as it is as I have the Windows UAC at default and the only restrictions we have are the pc sign on and our emails passwords. Wife and I are only usrs.
Is this correct to do?
2-I changed the days to seven before they are deleted but under settings, edit schedule, I am not sure if I should leave the default at 72.
I find the meaning confusing;is it functiobally reasonable to leave the hours at 72 or is it better to change this in view of my choice of backup days to 7?
Thank you for a great program.

Everything Else / buffering
« on: June 04, 2012, 12:08:11 pm »
Hello
Maybe time for a reinstall -ugh! laptop is fine with the issues below so it is the desktop.
Three issues maybe related;
1-I could not view Shane's tutorials at Tweaking.com
2-I cannot turn media streaming off[network and internet, advaced homegroup settings  streaming media]
3-youtube =when watching videos of the new registry, or any video, the ?buffering(little spinner) keeps interrupting the video.
Could this syndrome point to a common cause?
Thank you

Everything Else / media streaming can't turn off
« on: June 04, 2012, 07:27:21 am »
Hello
As trivial as this may seem, I cannot turn my Media streaming Off and I think this is contributing to a problem.
Win 7 x64
Control panel>Network and internet>Network and sharing center>advanced sharing settings.
The laptop is off and I can watch your vides. The desktop is on and I can't.

Either way, how can I turn the media sreaming off??
Thank you

In preparation for the new registry backup, I would like to install a virtual computer. I went to the MS site and it said it was only for 32(86) byte.
Is there a VM for 64 byte pcs?
Thank you

I had a thought; would it be advisable to download the portable program to a thumb drive and if there was a problem I could insert the thumb drive to access the program?
If the pc could not start, I could use the os to boot then set F12 to boot from usb?
No?

1st, congratulations.
I am not going to invade your thread so you will not be tied up and so others will benefit from the questions we normal users have.
Regarding scheduling options, after all is said and done, if you want to restore your pc are you better off with the first or second choice. My wife and I use the pc and were not quite sure;we would like to see it done but do not want to lose any of the backup. It sounded as though part of the backup would not be there if we used the first option,I believe.

We are fine with the program itself but when it comes to dos, we have issues which I think only study and tutorials will fix.
If you have never used command prompts except to check ip addresses etc it is hard.
I hope, if you have the o.s. disc(smaller than the size of the o.s. you are using as it has grown with use)you can use it to boot into the option to run the command prompt. Then maybe use the other pc as a guide to run the dos commands to restore outside of the program. The restore feature within the program is great as is the entire program.
Thank you so much for helping all of us normal people with Win 7. Off to discuss it elsewhere.

Everything Else / pc on or off
« on: May 29, 2012, 11:00:59 am »
Hello
Below is a sentence I pasted from an article on the question about turning a pc on or off when not used.

We have a laptop and a deskktop and are home all day. My wife goes to the laptop about 6 times a day and I am on the dektop for hours at times.

Should we be powering up and turning off about 6-8 times a day?

"Well times have changed, hardware has changed, and cost has really changed! It just doesn't make sense to leave a system on if it will be left, unattended, for more than an hour."

Everything Else / chrome o.s.
« on: May 28, 2012, 12:47:56 pm »

Hello
If I want to see the Chrome o.s. and see how it works, can I download it to a flashdrive and when downloaded "open" it within the flashdrive or will it become part of my current pc's o.s?
Is there some way to keep it confined to the flashdrive and use it from there?
Thank you
Peter

Tweaking.com Support & Help / Win 7 x64
« on: May 28, 2012, 09:11:51 am »
Hello
System restore; run services.msc
My volume shadow copy;
the status is empty(or nothing in the list) and startup type is manual.
This is the default for both the lap and desktop and both pcs run Win 7 x64 and are pretty much the same pcs.
Will an automatic system restore be created this way?
In other words, what is the best way to set this -or leave it alone?
Thank you

General Computer Support / chrome os and registry
« on: May 25, 2012, 03:00:25 pm »

Hello
My son responded to the new registry backup that he uses the Chrome os which has no registry, just a sign in. It seems that all is in the clouds and he accesses his work and programs(no third pparty)with a password. Is this a viable option to Windows and the need to involve ourselves with a/v programs, imaging programs and the like. He says if anything  goes wrong with his machine none of his work is disturbed and can be acessed.
Anyone care to enlighten me. I have tried to read up on it but it is confusing to me.
Thaanl you

General Computer Support / reg backup
« on: May 24, 2012, 10:16:14 am »

I was surfing for a reg back up I found this article where the author says this will backup the entire registry for Win 7. To my knowledge this has never been used to backup the entire registry prior to Win 7 and I am leery about it doing so for Win 7.
Please let me know if this is true or not?
Thank you

General Computer Support / Windows 7 Firewall Control
« on: May 22, 2012, 11:57:03 am »
Hello
I am using the Win 7 firewall that is part of Windows 7.
It seems it protects traffic one way. I was reading about a firewall named  "Windows 7 Firewall Control" which seems to protect two ways.
Is this the same as the one I have or different.
If different, which would you suggest for an average user who has a router.
Thank you
Peter
