Ran Tweaking, now can reboot only in safe mode
« on: March 05, 2014, 02:53:18 pm »
I am using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on a Lenovo T410.  I ran the windows repair and now I can reboot only in safe mode.  When I reboot the regular way, I get my wallpaper and some icons but I the hourglass icon comes on  & the reboot never completes.  I'd appreciate your help with this.

Thank You,

DavidY

How long did you leave it to try and finish booting?

Also if you can boot into safe mode then that means Windows is ok but it is one of the startup programs or services that is hanging things up.

So try this, in safe mode go to start and in the search or run box type in

msconfig

And hit enter.

When it comes up click on the services tab, and then put a check on the bottom that says to hide Microsoft services. Now in the list is all the services that are not part of Windows that is loading up, for now uncheck them all (We will put them back later)

Once done click apply and then click on the startup tab. These are all the programs set to run at startup, for now uncheck them all and hit apply.

Now reboot and see if you can get to the desktop and we will go from there

OK good :cheesy: So windows is fine.

So now we know for sure it is one of the startup programs.

What you can do now is go back to msconfig and try enabling only things you need or want to be running at startup. After you do that, reboot and see how it goes. The fun part is finding out which program or service is doing it

I'm new at this.  Is it trial and error until I find the culprit?

Also, are there services and startup items that are essential?

It is a process of elimination, a pain yes, but the only way to find out what program is doing it.

So you do it by enabling a few things at a time and reboot each time, if the problem comes back then you know it was one of items you enabled last.

A lot of people will have a bunch of crap set for startup that they dont need to have running all the time. The msconfig tool give you control over that.

The programs are not uninstalled or removed, just simply removed from running at startup. So only enable what you would like running at startup, anything else you can always go run yourself.

So first thing I would do is enable back anything that has to do with your antivirus and then reboot and go from there :-)

Happy to help :-)

Make sure to let me know how it goes and if you find out which program at startup is doing it.

By the way, the less things you have enabled at startup the faster the system will boot up.

There are two seemingly identical Quicktime items in the startup list.  Could that have been the cause of the problem?

NO way to tell unless you can get it to happen again :-)
