Computer slow to boot and generally slow.

Hi,

Hope you can help my ageing machine running XP Home 32.

I have used Windows repair v2.7.2 (Microsoft Windows XP v5.1 32-bit) but it's still as slow as ever!

The Windows Repair is for fixing windows, doesnt do anything to speed it up.

Instead try my other program

Also make sure you open msconfig and disable any startup items and non Microsoft services you dont need, that will help a lot.

Also install my free version of my CleanMem tool, that will help keep memory from being pushed to the page file which will slow the system down a lot. :wink:

Would it help to eliminate the virtual memory and close the page file completely? 


I am having the same problems mentioned here but to the extreme, with a Dell 8250 running Vista.  In the past month or so I have increased the RAM from something around 612mb to 2GB.  I have increased the on board video memory from almost nothing to 512mb.  I have run every single test or repair available where ever I could find it.  Everything says my system is in ultra-excellent shape.  Yet, I still have to wait forever for a page to load, to be able to use the mouse on a new page, to be able to to do almost anything.  The truth is, I am about to virtually pull my virtual hair out. 


I will try your suggestions but I think I need an Extreme Makeover for this thing.  Can I just reload Vista again right on top of the present one?  It was an upgrade to begin with.  Would that help?

I only disable the page file on my system when I have 8 GB or more of memory.

Should it be set on "automatic" or should it have a specific size specified?

I normally do a static file so that it wont get fragmented. Start with 2048 MB and if for any reason you need more you can make it bigger. But if your page file of 2 GB gets full then something has a memory leak. Otherwise 2 GB seems to handle it fine on all the systems I do.

I also confirm that CleanMem tool works well.  I've got 4 GB RAM and it used to be little used by Windows 7.  Much faster operations now...
