Wonder if it's worth changing the Wired AutoConfig to Automatic and Starting it ?

It would mean it will be on all of the time - if it works, but will only be effective when you wire up.

Can't remember if I tried that (getting lost in all the stuff I've tried), but I did force start it. Didn't help.

I noticed a few minutes ago that my desktop computer, always connected via ethernet cable to router, doesn't start wired auto config, yet it always works! I just turned on the ailing laptop to do some comparison and discovered that it connects via ethernet cable, but very slowly as the attached screenshot shows. I'm now using driver version 5.810.1218.2012 for the wired NIC.

Are you using the same Ethernet cable for the laptop as you are for the desktop and is the download speed on the desktop as it should be ?

No, not the same cable. However, remember that when I boot the laptop into Windows 7, the speed is excellent on the same cable. The desktop speed is also excellent.

An aside. I found working drivers for the audio!! For anyone else going crazy after trying well over a dozen drivers for XP 32 bit, they came from this link:

It's possible the IRQ error could be causing the MAC Loopback error, although I've never come across it and not sure if it's just peculiar to XP - but go Start - Run - type msinfo32 - press enter - expand Hardware Resources/IRQ and that will show the status of each and which are sharing.

There's also Problem Devices when you expand Components you could check out.

Edit - I've found out roughly what the Phy and MAC Loopback are.

See attached for NIC IRQ. The problem devices were just two that didn't have drivers installed yet, but I have them and they worked.

The problem remains. I've managed to find working drivers for everything else. When the sound actually came on, it was almost an epiphany!!

You could uninstall the LAN driver in Device Manager, leaving the software box unchecked then Action/Scan for hardware changes or reboot and let Windows install one of its WHQL drivers.

Are the USB Host Controllers the only items that the GBE is sharing with ?

AMD's graphics drivers deal with those and as you will only have Win 7's, as far as I know for the HD 6320 - wondering if it's worth using the auto detect in XP as they could be the cause of the conflict, although you could try uninstalling them in Device Manager to see if that has any effect on the LAN speeds. http://www.amd.com/en-us/markets/game/downloads

A reboot or Action/Scan for hardware changes will reinstate them but create a restore point first as a belt & braces.

Did that. Windows just reinstalled a Realtek driver.

I've been playing around with an XP partition restored from a backup that had no device drivers installed, except for the hard drive. I did that to isolate both the sound and wired NIC device drivers from all other device drivers. I only installed video drivers today, so they weren't a factor up till now.

Try uninstalling the USB Host Controllers then - something is causing the IRQ.

With a desktop a simple solution would be to move the NIC to a different slot, but with a laptop, the LAN is built into the motherboard.

I did as you suggested. No difference. Yes, it isn't getting any easier. Except that at least I've discovered that I can use a work-around with a USB to ethernet adapter.

In the bios, is there a plug and play setting? And if so it is set to enabled?

In most bios there is a irq plug and play option where you can set it to yes to allow windows to control the irqs. Of course this is on normal motherboards for system I build, I dont normally see that option on store built machines, but worth a look.

Unfortunately this laptop's BIOS settings are very few and limited. I can't do as you suggested. It has frustrated me when I first attempted to install XP. Would've been much easier if I could've tweaked the storage controller settings, then installed drivers afterwards for the advanced settings.

Not sure if possible, but if you are able to still load up windows 7 you can check the irq settings it has set for the network and compare them to the xp side. I dont remember if you had windows 7 on another drive or on dual boot or not installed at all any more.

If you dont have it installed another trick would be to download the ubuntu live cd, you can run ubuntu off the cd (Or usb thumb drive) and see if the network works fine for it, if it does then you can check the irq settings there as well.

Shane, I think the problem is only in the driver update. Normally those previous versions drivers were supplied as cds and there would be some update which one would forget to update. Then these drivers became obselete, as is the system os, and therefore most companies would not give supporting drivers for the same product. Windows 7 auto detects the drivers from the connections and also from window updates.
The solution would be be look in to the other drives, where there is usually a back of all the software supplied with the laptop. I would advise you look out for a similar laptop in xp configurations and then copy the drivers from their folder to your computer and activate it by installing the exe files from those folders. Normally i find some numerical exes as drivers stored in other drives in xp system of the laptop.
It seems that the thread owner first installed the windows 7 and then xp without supported software cds of the xp.

If it is mother board drivers, it is best to go to their site or alternate sites and download the ethernet drivers

Windows 7 came with the computer. I added XP to dual boot.

Yes, that would be the solution. As I've found out through searching all over and on the HP laptop support forum it would be MY laptop from which others would get drivers for XP! I will be posting all the drivers I've found on the HP support forum. I already started.
