I don't speak computer..........omg.....help..............
« on: November 19, 2014, 03:52:36 pm »
Our computer is freezing.  It does this at anytime. Has been doing this since the middle of October. Before I downloaded this tool, I did a system restore, disk check, SFC check, a pc clean up, virus scan, diagnostic tests etc.  The ONLY thing that was found was from the SFC check. It said that some files were corrupt but could not repair all of them.  I go on the internet in search of some answers.  I found that I needed to do a "dism/online/cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth from the command prompt.  I got an error 87 saying that the option is unknown.  The only thing I know how to do now is call the Geek Squad from Best Buy........I really want to do this myself............

OMGosh, I'm so sorry, I completely forgot to put what system we have.  Yes,  Windows 7 home premium w/ service pack 1.  Everything was perfect til some time in October.  I cannot find any event during that time that would tell me something happened........

When sfc /scannow is unable to repair some files, the next step is to run an offboot sfc /scannow.

This is done by booting up with a Win 7 SP1 install disk of the same version as your OS - navigating to the Recovery Environment  and enter these commands -

bcdedit |find "osdevice" then using whichever partition letter it gives, enter (assuming C: - and that's a Pipe symbol before find) -

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows

If you don't have an install disk then you can download and save a Win 7 Home Premium SP1 ISO from http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/page-2#post-124821 ensuring you select the correct version - i.e. 32 or 64 bit.

You can then use http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool to create a bootable USB or DVD.

Tap F12 (usually) as you switch on then using the cursor keys select your bootable Media - ODD is the disk player drive.

You will be momentarily prompted to press any key to boot from your selected media then possibly be presented with a black screen with the option to press F8.

After pressing F8 select Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Click on Repair your Computer in the splash screen - confirm keyboard/language/currency or whatever you are prompted for using the dropdown then follow the prompts until you get a number of repair options - headed by Startup Repair.

Select Command Prompt and enter the commands as instructed and let us know what the sfc /scannow reports.

I'm off to bed now as it's 12.30am here in the UK but if you have any problems, Shane should be popping in shortly and will help you out.

I removed your other thread, please dont do more than one thread at a time for a problem, otherwise I will get confused on who I am helping lol

So, give me a little more info. When you say the computer is freezing, what do you mean exactly? Try to describe it. Does a certain program freeze? Does everything freeze but you can still move the mouse? Or does everything freeze including the mouse and your only option is to kill the power?

Everything freezes, only option is the kill power.  It's even frozen in safe mode a few times.  I could be doing anything and it will freeze.  I don't think it's a "certain" program.  I would be just on the net and everything would freeze.  I could be watching a short video and it would freeze.  I try to pull up programs on the computer and while all the programs would be coming up, BAM.........freeze.  It seems that the more the computer is trying to work at something, it would do this.

I have run every test and the ONLY thing it found was when I ran the SFC test. It said.  "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.  Details are included in the CBS.log etc.

When I go and try to look at the log, I can't get access.  ALTHOUGH, I have been able to see it a few times.  After I did your tweaking tool, I could see it, but now I can't again.

I tried to do a dism/online/Cleanup-Image/restoreHealth from the command prompt but got this:  Error 87  Dism/online/cleanup-Image is unknown.

Hubby did find the original install disk. We haven't tried to uninstall and re install Windows.  Don't know if that's even an option, but we haven't tried that yet.  After that, the only thing we can think of is to call "the Geek squad" and have them come over.

It didn't freeze at all yesterday.  Was surprised because I was all over Ebay w/ several windows open bidding on a few things and it didn't freeze once.  Then this morning I turned it on and was on facebook watching a short video and everything froze.

I can do things. It just seems so random.  I can still pay bills, surf the web, email etc, just inconvenient when all of a sudden, everything is frozen.

It is possible it is hardware related, espically if it is locking up in safe mode. Bad sectors on the drive can do that. So lets check that first.

So instead of a normal chkdsk we are going to have it look for bad sectors.

Open a cmd.exe windows (Run it as administrator if you have the UAC enabled) and put in

chkdsk c: /r

It will ask you if you want to schedule it for next boot, hit Y and then enter.

Now reboot, before windows comes up it should start the chkdsk, this will take a while! It will check every sector on the drive, so if it is a big drive it could take a couple of hours.

Once it is finished it will put the log in the event viewer, let me know what that log says and we can go from there.

Yes, but stage 4 and 5 are the parts where it checks the sectors :-)

Ok, might be getting somewhere.  I checked the event log from the disk check and it didn't find anything HOWEVER, while I was in there, I could go back 6 months to see all the other events that have happened.

I didn't understand a lot of it BUT I did get when the computer froze this morning, I found out why.

This is what the event log said happened this morning.

The application Cannot be initialized:
Context:  Windows Application, SystemIndex Catalog

Details:  The content index catalog is corrupt  (HRESULT:  0xc0041801) (0xc0041801)

could THIS be causing the computer to freeze?

OK good, hard drive looks good. Next thing to test is the memory.

Windows 7 should have a built in memory test tool.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/715-memory-diagnostics-tool.html

Have it test the memory and let me know how it goes. Right now I am going through a process of elimination to try and trace down the problem, so before we start digging into windows we will make sure the hardware is all good

Also, when was the last time you did a total power drain on the system? Where you pull the power cord and battery, then hit the power button a few times, when the system tries to turn itself on it will drain itself of all power left in it. That is how you properly reset the hardware and that can sometimes actually fix the problem, so it is good to do that as well.

I did a power drain right before I did the tweaking tool I downloaded.  I also did a memory test a few days ago and it found nothing.  The PC doctor (on our Dell) did the full testing of EVERYTHING and found nothing.  Want me to do another memory test?

If you already did a memory test then we dont need to do it again.

So far memory and hard drive test good, how long will you be on the system before it freezes? Do you notice any kind of common factor, such as a certain thing you do or a certain program that is running? Any common factor you can think of?

You said it also freezes in safe mode, what where you doing in safe mode when it froze, same things you did in normal mode? And when you where in safe mode did you do safe mode with networking? (I ask in case we need to test the network card as well)

It only froze twice while in safe mode and I was using the "safe mode w/ networking".  I was running a few pc clean up scans.  Those scans did clean out a lot of "junk" that was on the computer and it hasn't froze in safe mode since then.

I'm not using any kind of program when it freezes.  I could be just be on facebook browsing or on Ebay or just reading an article on msn and it would freeze.  Any time of the day or evening.

It could be fine and I walk away from the computer but when I return...........mouse is frozen and it won't do anything.  It's just so random.  Out of ALL the scans and tests I've run over the past 10 days, the ONLY thing that came back wonky is the SFC scan that found corrupt files but couldn't repair some of them.  That's it.

Looking at that even log really opened my eyes on exactly what's happening w/ the computer.  Just not sure on how to fix it..........

OK, so one common factor is the network since having the web browsers open and on the net is going through the network card.

Or it could be something else combined. Lets take a look at that sfc log and see what files it is complaining about.

So go ahead and open a cmd.exe as administrator and do a new sfc scan

sfc /scannow

Once it is done run this command (You can copy and past it into the cmd window)

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >C:\sfcdetails.txt

That will output all the stuff from the sfc from the cbs.log file into a new text file. Go tot he root of your C: drive and you should see the file there, post it for me

OMG It was running the sfc scan and Igot a blue screen!.   ugh.. I am on my Ipad again.  I restarted it in safe mode w/ networking and running the scan again.
