Hello, I am using an Acer mainframe installed with Vista Home Premium 32 bit and IE9.
Today I installed 19 MS security updates but I am being notified by the update icon on the taskbar that there are 4 updates ready for download and installation. These 4 are being presented again and again for action regardless. Here is the rundown:

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 on Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB3023224)

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 on Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB3035490)

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB3048077)

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 on Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB3037581)

This last one has been recycling to be installed since 14th March this year.

Update history shows all 4 updates as being successfully installed.

Belarc shows KB3037581 as a missing security file since it's install of 14th March and also today.

The first 3 files, although being recycled for installation are not shown by Belarc as missing security files. Thanks.

Hello Boggin, unfortunately it did not resolve the problem and Belarc still shows the 4th file as not being installed. Thanks anyway.

All those updates have to do with .Net

In cases like that and anything with a problem with .Net I find that the only way to truly fix .Net is to completely yank the sucker and install it fresh.

I use this tool here
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx

I have it remove every .net there is, then reboot, when the system comes up I will get a few errors from any programs trying to run that need .net, ignore those, then go download .net 4.5 from MS and install it, then reboot and do the updates like normal.

Let me know how that goes

Yes the tool will remove everything automatically and when you install 4.5 it installs 3.5 as well (I have to double check) but no matter what you will be able to reinstall any version .net you need.

Every time .net breaks this has been the only way I have gotten it to work, and this works for me every time. Because that removal tool does a good job at removing any trace of .net, so when you reinstall it, it is a nice fresh install. Far more successful than trying to fix a broken .net

Hello Shane, here is what happened:
I ran the cleanup tool and rebooted. I the ran the pre downloaded what I thought was the 4.5.2 file
this being NDP452-KB2901954-Web.exe. which resulted in a square box labelled .net. i clicked on it and a panel came up asking if I wanted to remove or repair the .net.4.5.2. file. I clicked on Repair but it said it could not find the file so I cancelled it. Then the update icon appeared in the taskbar so I clicked on it which took me to the list of new updates. One file failed two attempts with an error of 643. The others installed and I was not asked to reboot at all. Here is a screen grab of the results. I used Nirsoft myuninstaller to see what files had been installed and saw that the MS.net framework 4.5.2 was there but the installation date said 23/01/2015. Have I mucked up somewhere? Thanks

Have just run MSFixit but it failed to resolve the Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile for Windows Vista x86 (KB982670) error.

I remember reading an Aaron Stebner blog where he advocated reinstalling .NET Framework versions in reverse order and as v4.5 replaced v4.0 then try restarting with that one and then you won't need v4.0.

This would mean dumping them again but I think some had problems with v1 even though v3.51 is supposed to include the previous versions, so perhaps it would be advisable to leave the v1s installed.

This could be a workaround or result in the same error code.

From what I understood when helping someone a couple of years back with .NET Framework problems, was that v4.0 was a new breed and didn't include the previous versions as v3.51 did.

For the 0x80070643 error have you ran a sfc /scannow to see what that reports or a chkdsk without any parameters to see if that suggests further remedial action ?

The cleanup tool may have not uninstalled it all the way, it shouldnt have asked you to repair it when you ran the .net installer.

When you ran the repair tool what options did you choose and did you make sure to run the tool as administrator?

Yes please do, I will be online for a bit so I will be able to answer back, make sure to run it as administrator and when it gives you the option of what you want to do make sure to have it remove everything, it can take a bit to finish, post any screen shots of anything you have a question about so I can answer it for you :-)

If the tool is able to remove .net properly then when you go to install it again it shouldnt ask if you want to repair because it should see that .net is gone. Make sure to disable your AV and any 3rd party programs as well to make sure they dont mess with it.

Shane, have just checked the system firewall settings and saw that net.framework 4.0 did not have a ticked box. Should I tick it to enable exception? I have not yet started over but just checked the firewall on a whim.

Hello Shane, here is latest attempt. I ran cleanup tool as administrator and selected default which is all to do with Vista frameworks then rebooted after cleanup.
After reboot:
One MS update appeared ready for download via icon on taskbar:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86. I ignored it and ran the file to download and install net.framework 4.5.2. here are the resulting screen grabs.
Although it failed I did another reboot.
There is still v4.5.2. on the system dated 23/01/2015 02:11:55 AM.
Should I download the impending Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86.?
I noticed in the failure of 452 (screen grab 01) it appears the source file to be looked for is the net.framework 4.0 one.
Thanks

Shane, I have been googling whilst awaiting your reply and am wondering if I should uninstall .net framework 4.5.2 and then try to install v4.0 and then install 4.5.2. again in a bid to slot in the files in order. Here is a screen grab near the end of the logfile resulting from a failed attempt to install v4.0 via the standalone installer. Alternatively, would an appropriate restore point take me back to the origial problem that consisted of the recurring invites to install 2 other security updates as that would hopefully put back v 4.0 as I have now discovered an amount of programs that need v4.0 to run. Thanks

OK try this, uninstall any .net that you can manually, then reboot, then use the cleanup tool again, then reboot.

Then when you download the .net install the one thing I have always done was download the network installer, that way I have the whole setup and it doesn't have to download anything.

What you can also do, after you run the cleanup and before you try to install .net is to use this tool
http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/windows_installer_cleanup_utility.html

This will allow you to see the list of programs that are installed that the MSI on the system has remembered. This is what a setup looks at to see if it is already installed, use this tool and remove anything .net related, that way when you run the .net install it shouldnt see any old install and it should stop asking you to try and repair it. Never try to repair when it asks
