Does Windows Repair Kit Perform The Following Fixes
« on: June 29, 2012, 01:03:36 pm »
Hello, I was wondering if running all of the built-in fixes in Windows Repair Kit will reset the internet protocol as suggested on this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

I was also wondering if it resets both the proxy settings and the DNS settings.

Thanks.

Okay, I have another question.

Will running all of the built-in fixes in Windows Repair Kit be able to restore all of the shortcuts, as is described in this removal guide for the Smart HDD virus:
http://malwaretips.com/Thread-Smart-HDD-virus-removal
In fact are there any fixes suggested in that particular guide that running all of the built-in fixes in Windows Repair Kit does not fix?

I ask because I need to make sure I address fixes such as this in my article. If it does not do you know of an easy way to restore these?

Thanks.

My windows repair will move the shortcuts back to their proper location.

That virus moves those shortcuts to the temp folder. As long as you havent emptied your temp folder they should still be there. I made the reapir to put those shortcuts back because I kept having customers get it and had some users also request it

So if I'm understanding it correctly just running all of the built in repairs will automatically do everything suggested in that removal article.

Is that correct?

Which repairs should be selected in order to fix all problems described on this page:
http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/fix-internet-connection/

Also, if there are any other repairs which should be selected in order to fix any type of internet problem please let me know.

By the way, the article I've written can be found here:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-fix-malware-infected-computer.htm

Please let me know if my suggestions about how to use Windows Repair Kit are correct.

Thanks.

I always run the rest reg and file permissions. Because if permissions are messed up a lot of the repairs wont work. So I like to make sure :-)

Register System Files
Repair WMI
Repair Host file
Remove policies set by infections
Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
Repair Proxy settings
Set Windows Services to Default.

Thank you. I have another question.

Specifically which fixes would you recommend I run to fix all problems associated with the malware discussed on this page:
http://malwaretips.com/Thread-Smart-HDD-virus-removal

Shane
Thanks, so are you saying that I should recommend that they use "Reset Registry Permissions", "Reset File Permissions", "Unhide Non System Files", and "Repair Missing Start Menu Icons Removed By Infections"?

Are there any other fixes they should run for repairing damage caused by this type of malware? What about removing the proxy server, as suggested in the article? Should I also recommend that they use "Repair Proxy Settings"?

Sorry to ask so many questions. I just want to figure out how to get even the most novice user to be able to recover from an infection like this without having to go out of their way to ask an expert. I also want to figure out how to use this tool to repair problems with as few options selected as possible. I believe this should minimize the chances of extra damage.

Yeah those will work as well  :cheesy:

All the repairs are safe to do, I normally run them all.

In the program there is an info tab for each one and it tells you what it does

Hi Shane,

Could you elaborate on that? I don't see any options in your tool that would fix "System Driver Files and Services."

Where are you seeing "System Driver Files and Services."?

My tool doesnt do anything with drivers. The only repair for all the services is to reset them back to their default startups. (Very helpful when a virus or a unknowing user disabled some services)

He's talking about the part on this page about how to "Fix System Driver Files and Services":
http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/fix-internet-connection/

So does this mean that I should advise users who still have problems to follow the advice on that page?

Thanks.

Yeah, my program doesnt mess with the drivers.

The Repair Windows Firewall is the only repair that replaces some reg keys for some services. Other than that the set service to default is the other repair.

The one thing that keeps my repair tool from doing even better is the registry.

It doesn't replace much in it at all. And a lot of problems in a system can be caused by reg keys being deleted. Such as a virus deleting reg keys for services.

The reason why I dont have the program replace these is because there are SO many keys. Different for each OS version and a lot of keys are unique to the system itself. It would be like playing with fire having a program mess with your reg keys.

So until I find only the safest keys to replace my program will never be perfect.

But I am hoping to find a safe way to get this added down the road :-)

Please let me know if your program will work well to be able to fix the internet services, as mentioned in this article (in the section about Fix System Driver Files and Services, but below the part for 1. Fix System Drivers) :
http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/fix-internet-connection/
if I have already fixed the system drivers and services as described in this section of my article:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-fix-malware-infected-computer.htm#How_To_Fix_Remaining_Internet_Problems

I want to know if running your program would be enough to start/repair the services which are not running, or whether I need to use something similar to the .bat files.

Thanks.

Yes it does "Reset Windows Network Settings"

Right now it sets the defaults of the startup of each service. But if the service has been deleted by a virus then it wont work. Only the Repair firewall repair replaces a few services. In the files folder with the program you will see "regfiles" there you will see what services the Repair Windows Firewall replaces

My article is now able to advise people on how to replace missing services.

Can your program get any services, which are there, to start working again if they have been disabled?

Thanks.
