The big November update for Windows 10 TH2 Fail
« on: November 21, 2015, 07:12:57 am »
Does any one know why the update failed and a way to fix it? It just said it failed and did not give me an error. Wondering if it logged the error somewhere. Thanks.

Some have found that by restoring to before the TH2 update and then a manual check for updates got the update installed.

Others have had to resort to using the Media Creation Tool which includes TH2 now, but I did see a warning about using that on an existing Win 10, but can't remember what it was and MS seemed to have pulled the website with the Upgrade Now button that would give you it.

Edit - Just remembered what the warning is.

When used on an existing Win 10 it can overwrite temporary files that are needed if you ever wanted to revert to your previous Windows version - but if you are past that stage then that would be academic.

Also MS did pull the TH2 update for a few days because of a major bug in it where it didnt remember your privacy settings and some other things and then they put a new version of it out.

@Shane

Should I have my dad try the update again and if it fails again where does 10 keep the error info so I can look at it to see if it can be fixed. I did get it to in stall on there laptop. The question is How would I know if the the first version or the new reissue version with the fixes? Will it tell me to reinstall it to get the fixes or is there other update with the fixes? Thanks

This is the re-released version which may self install through Windows Updates.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3120677

I did read somewhere that for those who had already installed it that this version will overwrite the bad bits in the previous version, so it may install again on their laptop.

This article lists the settings it may have changed for some.

What you point me to is the Cumulative update. I did that When I first heard about it. Iis there a newer version of that or am I good to go? Tge date that it shows the 24th. I installed the update when it came out so it was before 24th.

Ok I did some digging and look like you pointed me to the new update version of the cumulative update that I installed so I need to have windows update check for that. Thanks

I had come across where .11 had been upped to .14 and while the article I'd linked listed possible errors for some, I wasn't aware which files were involved - but those may have been in "Greek" for me :) although they will mean more to Shane.

I have been slammed with work and so havent been on this much. But I will be getting all the latest updates and seeing if ms has fixed some of those huge bugs yet.

While i am glad to see MS working on fixing things they also seem to be making new bugs along with it. But as a programmer I can understand how that can happen, espically when you have way to many fingers in the dang pot!

Another update has been released but as yet, Google hasn't produced an info link for it but it is proving problematic to install for quite a few.

It's KB3122947 and this guy has found a workaround if you also have install problems. http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/173241-kb3122947

Do not know yet. I just saw this today. I have not put 10 on my computer. There is two computers I can check on to see if it goes ok. One should do just fine the other I am hoping it works.

Just re-read the thread - and it's your dad's computer that is having the problems - does he have Win 10 installed ?

That is does. But then The TH2 came out and that would not install the I saw it was pulled and now it is back I was going to try it again. I think there have been 3 or 4 updates after TH2 came out.

Yes, they seem to be chucking out an update every other day.

I think the Upgrade now button in https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-10-upgrade should include the MCT with at least some of the updates even if they haven't updated it with the latest - did you try that before ?

See if you have any better luck with that then - however, if your dad is still within the 30 days and that is run, it will devoid the 30 day roll back and a system image that should have been created before the upgrade will need to be used.

I will check it out and see what goes on. He is looking into getting a new computer and I will be getting this whitch is new then my. Got my co,puter a few months after Vista came out. Says I can upgrade to 10 but have not do that yet. I will try after I get my dad's computer. Think there might be something wrong with my install and upgrading my fix it or break it or could just fail. One thing we saw when he had 7 Steam stopped work saying no internet and could not find why and I think few of the other that are use to run games did same nd after upgrading to 10 it fixed that problem For now we can leave with it. I will still try and see if I can fix it and get it running. One other thing My dad told me about his computer and I have seen it do it is when you tell it to reboot, it shuts down just fine but when it boots up it get stuck at the windows logo screen like it freezes there and you have to hold the power button till turn off the turn it back on and it boots up just fine. Never had that problem with 7. Just little things I can leave with. One thing I can check is to see if the bios needs an update. Maybe even some drivers may need a update too. Thiss is not reall a big deal just gives me something to do.

I've seen it reported that a BIOS update can fix the hang on boot problem in Win 10, so it may be easily fixed.
