dead win-7 computer
« on: January 13, 2017, 08:16:47 am »
Thank you all for any help you can provide.
I have an Emachines small form computer, running Win-7 home Premium. AMD Athilon II 2.8 GHz. 3GB Ram, 1TB HD.
When booted, goes to windows screen and displays: starting windows services. gives notice that can't load windows due to problem (unspecified). Says reboot to load windows, but simply repeats when rebooted.
I ran Hirens boot 15.2 AND Ultra boot, but cannot get a boot into windows. I suspect a bad Master File Table and a virus that may have corrupted windows.
Can anyone make recommendations of what I can do next?
This may seem simple to some  of you but I'm not well versed in comp repair.

I'd create a Kaspersky Rescue Disk and boot up with that.

It will scan your computer for infections but will take some hours to complete - I think it took about 9 hours to run on one of my laptops.

Guys, many thanks for the Kaspersky info, but it found nothing.
When the computer is booted, it shows-Install Windows - "Setup is starting services". After several seconds it shows a box with "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Click OK to restart computer, then restart install."
When OK is selected, the computer repeats the above.
Is it possible that the OS is corrupted?

Any thoughts?

Can you boot up into the advanced boot options, usually by tapping F8 as you switch on, but this key/combo can be different depending on the make & model of computer.

I think it is still F8 for an Emachine.

Select Repair your computer > change/confirm keyboard input language > Next > change/confirm username and enter password if one used > Next

In the Recovery Environment (RE) there is a Startup Repair option although that doesn't always work, but try that first.

If it reports it is unable to auto repair, select Command Prompt and while the Startup Repair will have already done this, manually enter these commands -

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /rebuildbcd

exit

Then Restart to see if it boots up.

If it doesn't, go back to the Command Prompt in the RE and enter -

bcdedit |find "osdevice"

chkdsk x: /r

Where x=the partition letter as it doesn't always see the volume in C:

That is a Pipe symbol before find and is the uppercase of \

Make a note of what it reports and if it finds any KBs in bad sectors.

Enter c: and at the c: prompt enter sfc /scannow to see what that reports.

That will either report no integrity violations - found corruption and repaired files or it was unable to repair all files.

If it's the latter then that will need  a different resolution - but see how you get on with those steps.

Many thanks, Boggin, for all the help.
I was able to get into the restore partition, however, the OS restore wouldn't take. I took the hit and did a factory restore. Lost everything on the PC, but now the PC works.

Sorry it had to come to that but sometimes it's the only solution.

Too late for this time around, but try to get into the habit of creating system images onto external media.

I create a monthly one after the updates.
