[solved] PC very slow at boot and login + services not started
« on: November 02, 2012, 10:03:59 am »
Hi,

Since yesterday after some installation (dvdfab + MS updates), my DELL XPS17 Windows 7 does not work well :
- boot + login takes more than 5 minutes
- afterwards, I have to wait at least 5 more minutes before beginning to work (outlook or IE) - nothing happens or I get an answer 1 minute after
- I noticed some service did not start (especially event log) and some programs won't run ( dell stage to check the hardware)

I ran the tweaking all in one tool without any improvement.
Any advice ?

Thanks for help !

How fast does the system boot when going into safe mode?

Also have you done a chkdsk on the drive yet to check for any bad sectors?

And how did the system work before you did all the updates & what antivirus do you have installed?

Hi Shane,

Thanks for your help.

In safe boot mode, the behaviour is the same.
I checked the disk C: - no error
Before this awfull morning, the PC worked fine.
The antivirus is MacAfee which was installed with my Dell XPS17 which I have had for 2 years.
I attach to this post the diag file obtained through a tool named ZHPDiag

When booting is your hard drive light fully lit up?

Even if the drive has no bad sectors, if it is starting to fail it will run like a snail. Which in turn EVERYTHING on the system will run very slow as you are waiting for the drive to read the data.

So to find out lets see how the drive is doing speed wise.

Download and run this and post a screen shot of the speed results :-)

Hi Shane
The tool you sent me did not work.
I used another one and got these results

HD Tune: TOSHIBA MK6461GSY Benchmark

Transfer Rate Minimum : 37.3 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 114.3 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 81.3 MB/sec
Access Time           : 16.4 ms
Burst Rate            : 103.0 MB/sec
CPU Usage             : -1.0%

Well the drive looks to be fine, good speeds.

So we know the slow down isnt with the drive. Which means something got messed up in Windows.

A repair install might be best then. This way you can keep all your programs and data while still getting Windows reinstalled

Hi Shane,

I followed your instructions and made a W7 reinstallation according to the link beneath.
It took 5 hours for this operation ... but it finally worked
Everything is working again and I did not loose any application installed or data.
I just had to reinstall the Nvivia driver that was replaced by the default VGA driver

Thanks a lot for your help  :cheesy:
