I need some help - I have a hp Compaq 500 originally running on xp. I upgraded to windows 7 and since then I have no sound. The sound icon on the taskbar does not have an "x" on it but I cant hear a thing.
Any suggestions?

Post a screen shot of the device manager, that way I can see if anything isnt right

I see the audio controller doesn't have drivers installed.

Does windows updates offer any drivers?

No windows update doesn't.

I have downloaded drivers from Internet and have tried a manual install by browsing and selecting the drivers folder. But the system is unable to install or find the driver...See attachments.

Yeah there is no sound card installed, so that unknown audio device is it. Problem is it seems like they don't have proper drivers for it.

I have seen this happen on other store bought machines. What is the exact model on your computer and I will look up the specs of the motherboard and see if I can find some drivers that will detect and work with it.

OK no drivers amde for it in WIndows 7, but there is a way to make it work. Take a look at these two.

and
2. http://laptop-driver.blogspot.com/2009/12/installing-conexant-cx20468-31-ac97.html

You will simply have to edit a file and such, follow the guide and the driver should install.

Many thanks for your support... as a last resort I was thinking of downgrading back to XP but now I can stick to W7 with which I am pretty comfortable.
