Author Topic: Windows7 Professional- Computer crashes (Read 18015 times)

I just installed Windows 7 Professional on a 4 year old Dell computer that had Windows XP. I followed the instructions to do a clean install. I cannot get the Windows/Computer to stay on and run in normal mode. Everytime I try to do something, it just crashes. I spent the last 2 days (not kidding) talking to 4 different Microsoft helpers and it still doesn't work. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can get it to run so I can use the computer. I havent even been able to install all my programs.

What kind of crashes?

Blue screens? Also have you ran a memory test yet?

The computer goes blue, then black, then restarts and I am now running it in Safe mode as it always shuts down in normal mode. I didn't run a memory test as I don't know what that is.

Your system is set to auto restart on a blue screen. Lets stop that so we can see what message the blue screen gives

And a memory test will run and see if the system memory is bad or not.

Let that run for an hour and see if any errors are found

I unchecked the auto-restart as you suggested but the screen still turns blue, then black and autostarts without any error message.

I ran the Memory test as you suggested but there were no errors found.

I really need help as I need my computer for work and I don't know how to fix it. And I am the only worker here, no IT guys except you to turn to.

Memory tested fine, and Windows runs fine in safe mode.

If it was hardware Windows wouldn't run in safe mode. So it seems to be more of a driver issues.

Do you now how to check the event viewer for what the blue screen error message was?

Yes, I know how to check the Events but there are a kazillion errors and I don't know what they mean or which ones are important.

One error was DCOM got error 1084. Tell me where to look and under which heading, please.

Run in normal mode. Wait for it to reboot again on you and look at the time. As soon as your backup (Safe mode to be safe) check the event viewer under system and application and see what shows up for the time it rebooted. One of them will have the error the blue screen would have shown.

I reinstalled Windows 7 yesterday and yippee, it seemed to work. I installed 3 or 4 programs, printers, etc and everything seemed to work. Then this morning the computer crashed again and will not stay on in normal mode.

I looked at the Event viewer under System and the Error says Event 7001-Service Control Manager. And -dependency service or group failed to start.

I do not know what this means or how to fix it!!! Please help!

Sounds like you have a driver problem.

When you reinstalled did you install the chipset and video drivers yet? Or check is Windows Updates offered any drivers?

A week later and many frustrating hours online with Microsoft and the tech at Microsoft finally figured out I need new video and sound cards. I tried repeatedly to download these from the Dell site as I have a Dell computer, but I always get an error message on their drivers site. I phoned but no help.

Do you know of any other way or place that I can download drivers for my computer? You have been most helpful in the past. Thanks!

When it comes to store computers like Dell, the only and best place to get the drivers is for the product page on their site.

But as you said those refuse to work.
