Shane, I really appreciate your help.  For 77 I think I'm pretty good at solving problems on my PC.  I don't understand the bit about safe mode or the abbreviations, so I ask what do I do about safe mode??
The readyness tool from microsoft was downloaded and ran according to  your instructions as well as your repair software.  Did not help.
I downloaded and ran 64 bit SP1,  I guess 6 or 7 times over the past few years as well as the other day.  It has never installed.
BITT is running.

I don't know what part of win 7 searches for updates and then downloads them, but I'm lacking that software or its turned off.

Shane:
If I havent had you do this yet go ahead and run combofix on your system and lets see if it helps

Shane,

The results of the combofix is attached.
I don't know how to read it.

Shane:
Ok looks like it found and cleaned up a few things.

Now I want you to run my Windows Repair again, and run all the repairs. Before you do make sure to close all the background programs such as norton (Disable it) and close spybot tea timer (This blocks things in the registry and will prevent the repairs from putting reg keys in) and disable any other program you can that you have running down by the clock in the lower right hand corner of the screen.

After you run all the repairs I want you to reboot. When it comes back up close all the programs againa to make sure they are not getting in the way.

You never told me if installing the readiness tool worked or failed, you just told me you ran it. I need to know if it failed or not, if it did I want you to run it again. After that, with everything closed I want you to try to install service pack 1.

Shane

ok I can do that.
What about this "safe Mode" you mentioned?  What's that about?
