(solved) printer is shown as unknown device. or is it some other device?
Boggin:
Can you get hold of another USB cable to try ?
jraju:
Yes, with old one and the new one. The same result.
Moreover , the other one is xp, and there is no alert in system tray about the unknown device. But the printer was not responding.
Even tried full version of HP, Fatal error without denoting the error.
Normally when we try to update a driver , it is searching in windows updates.
If there is no driver, it checks the preconfigured folder for drivers first.
If i prefer to delete the printer driver from preconfigured folder, would it automatically install the drivers? If the driver is defective, then will it show it as correct driver?
The self test passes and so the printer is working. Ok.
But the joint of connection, between the usb cable and socket on the back of printer, will it be the causes or it is purely driver related
Boggin:
It's difficult to tell - what does the connection feel like ?
Does Event Viewer have any recorded errors for it.
What told you that you had the most up to date drivers for the printer - they are always best downloaded from the vendor's support site.
The fact that the printer does work until you plug in the USB cable would suggest that it's physical thing and perhaps the printer would need the attention of a tech - btw - how do you know the printer works without plugging the cable in ?
Without going back through your thread, I assume you have tried different USB ports ?
I don't have my printer installed on this laptop just yet as I'm in the middle of reinstalling bits and pieces following a factory reset, but have you checked the Printer properties/Port to see which port it is using when printing and what does it show when you plug in the USB cable.
I'm talking about the ports when you right click on the printer in Devices and Printers and select Printer properties.

Hi, Boggins, there is a self test print in HP. If you place a paper while connecting both power and usb print cables, and just open and close the lid of the printer four times, by pressing the on switch on the printer, it self test and print a paper. This process was successful and i came to the conclusion that printer is printing. But the communication data cable usb is having some problem in connection. Hence i asked you , whether the possibility of any loosen or broken and bending of some inner parts in the joint of usb cable and printer.
I enclose what port says in the enclosure
Boggin:
Mine defaults to a card reader Epson Network Print port, but mine is a wireless printer, although I could have set it up to just use USB had my computer not had wireless capability.
So are there micro switches in the lid ?
As I don't know your machine, I don't know the significance of the lid - not a requirement on my Epson.
Under the General tab of the Printer properties there is a Print Test Page option.
Can you try that with the USB cable attached and without going through the lid procedure to see if it prints - while it's trying that or when it previously fails, see if giving the USB plug at the rear of the printer a waggle to see if it elicits a response.
