error 800f081f unable to update Windows 7 (SOLVED)
« on: June 22, 2016, 02:07:22 pm »
I have read through the previous post regarding 800f081f and have attempted all of the suggested solutions including copying and pasting at the cmd.  All without success.  I have Win 7 on a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge.  The last update I see listed is dated 5/25/16.  When I attempt to update windows the "searching for updates" just keeps running with no results even though downloads are available at Microsoft.
I've run the Tweak repairs including the Pre-scan and I'll attach those.  I've also attempted to run wu10.diacab, however, it can't start and I then get the error 80070002 "context restricted."  The same error number pops up when I try to run windows troubleshooter "windows update diagnostic."
I've downloaded and run "System Readiness Tool" and subsequently "windows update standalone installer"  all to no avail.
Whether its related or not I also get an error on startup indicating that the Lenovo Service Bridge file could not be located.  See attached log.
There are no viruses or malware detected.  No errors are evident when I use sfc/scannow or ckdisk (actually I now see some errors so I'll fix them).
Please help.

Thanks.  Yes, that eliminated the Lenovo error message.  No change in windows update search, however.

While it may not fix your update problems (I haven't read any of its linked articles), can you see if you can download the Roll up update KB3161608 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161608

This update downloaded just fine.  As you guessed, no change in being able to download regularly.

You may want to follow this thread as I'm on a learning curve as well - although you may be able to take it from where it is.

I seemed to have come to a dead end on mine, but those updates in http://wu.krelay.de/en/2016-03.htm may be of help to you.

Having had a Google for your original error only gives either SURT which you've run or a repair install.

If you end up having the same amount of luck as I'm having, I'm not sure that even a factory reset would resolve.

EDIT - Mine now fixed.

Thanks, Boggin, for your ideas and the handy Windows Secrets Lounge link. Early days to be sure, but downloading and installing kb 3161608 seems to have speeded up Windows Update on one of my problematic computers. I couldn't get kb 3161608 to install at first but disconnecting from the internet and then rebooting, then installing did the trick. Took a while thereafter for WU to see updates but Windows is now downloading them at last.

Unfortunately, this didn't change anything.  So I used my Lenovo Startup and Repair disk.  I don't remember really authorizing it to do anything but since then the laptop only boots to the Advanced Recovery program which will fix nothing.  Using Startup Recovery only provides results saying that this computer isn't compatible with Startup Recovery.  I do have a Lenovo Recovery disk which provides me with the options of Restore windows partition or Restore to factory settings. I'm concerned that the Restore windows partition might delete my data on the disk so I haven't used either.  When I used a Bart PE disk for startup, I got the message
error 0x0000007b (0xf78d6528, 0x00000034, 0x00000000) and suggested chkdsk /f which found no errors.  I'm able to get to the cmd prompt and see that my data is still on the HD but can't get any of it to run.
Suggestions?

How do you mean it didn't change anything - I thought the updates were downloading fine ?

See if any of these Bootrec cmds will do anything for you - start with /fixmbr

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/927392

You could also use the cmd rstrui.exe to use your restore points, but they can be problematic if your mbr is all to hell and you could end up with nothing.

No, the updates never did download fine.  Only that one file KB... downloaded fine.  I've also attempted all of the options at https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/927392 and the laptop still won't bootup.  The boot is slightly different now, however.  It's looking for an image that was created (there is none).  I attempted to just Load Drivers as the other option but no success.  Also, when System Recovery Option screen comes up, my Windows 7 is not longer displayed as an option to choose for recovery tools.  The option window is now blank.  I had also changed the boot priority so the DVD drive is first for whatever that's worth.  I'm no longer able to access the cmd prompt so I couldn't run rstrui.exe but I've attempted restore points in the past and none of the restore points worked.
I've been considering upgrading to Win 10.  Is this a good time and is it still possible since I can't get Win 7 to boot?

If the other problematic computer you mentioned is the same Win 7 32 or 64 bit as this one, can you create a System Repair disk and boot up with that to see what that gives you.

Unfortunately, I only have XP and Win 10.  The computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad and I have a Lenovo Startup and System Repair disk that I made. (I also have an Avast rescue disk).  Currently the message when I run one of my bootable disks is
Cannot find a system image on this computer
Win Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry.
Indeed, the hard drive used to show up in one of these repair programs that we're using but it no longer does.  This has been the case since I entered those commands at  https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/927392

If it can't find an image on the computer, that means you are looking at a reinstall or factory reset, but you could see what a Paragon Rescue Disk can do with which you may be able to salvage some of your personal stuff.

If it doesn't give you a menu in its default normal mode then try it again by selecting the safe mode option.

https://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-free/

You said you were able to run a chkdsk /f - what did that report ?

I wouldn't have expected those Bootrec cmds to have caused any damage.

I made a Windows PE disk and a Linux Boot disk with the paragon program.  I was able to see and backup the important files but nothing enabled windows to boot normally.  If you think that it is safe and possible to just upgrade to windows 10, I think that is what I want to do.  I'm assuming that I would just reinstall factory settings and then attempt to upgrade.

If you don't have Win 7 showing as installed then I don't think you will be able to upgrade to Win 10 for free as it requires an activated qualifying version of Windows.

Do the factory reset and then you can upgrade through  https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-10-upgrade although there are other methods to perform the upgrade.

I'll follow your suggestions but I won't be able to work on it until after July 22nd.  I'll let you know.  Thanks.

Yes, I'm very aware of the cut off.  Thanks.
As it turns out even though I have 2 different Recovery Disks which I made from the laptop, neither will start the recovery process. Once attempted I get the message that this is "not the correct DVD."  Same thing happens with my Lenovo Startup & System Repair disk that I had made from the laptop.  Also, I have an image backup labeled as a .vhd file, however, when my Recovery Disk accesses the external drive for backup, after a few minutes the message "Cannot find the backup files."  There are several backups on this external drive, however, and the .vhd file is a few layers deep.
Suggestions?

Update.  I've been able to restore the image and so far it's working ok so don't spend any time on this.  I'll update later.
Thanks.

The laptop upgraded to Windows 10 seamlessly once I restored from the image.  Everything seems to be working fine.  Thanks so much for your help with these issues.
Not quite sure how to end this thread and marked closed but it is.

You go to your opening post, click on Modify and add (SOLVED) to the title, but I'll do it for you.
