@Ka6uup: Take the file in the attachment and place it in the "files" subfolder of WR. Change the extension from ".txt" to ".bat". Turn off the internet & Norton and then run the file with admin rights.

If this helps to solve the "unidentified" error, then it's - IMO - a good clue where WR needs to be improved.

@Ka6uup: You still can use Windows Repair (WR) to solve a number of problems in Windows XP and keep the MS firewall disabled/turned off at the same time. To do this in XP requires a different approach than in Win 7 (Vista ??) and higher.

For XP, add the line (including all spaces)

"Sc config SharedAccess start= disabled"

to the file "Services_start.txt" (in a subfolder of WR) and run the "Set Services to Default Start" option, everytime you run WR. Then WR disables the MS firewall at the end of the program.

General Computer Support / Re: Computer hung in System Restore
« on: July 09, 2013, 07:57:00 am »
- The "paid for" version of AVAST doesn't disable WinDefender (WD). I know because I have that AVAST version on my Win 7 system.
- A different matter is MS Security Essentials (MSSE). WD is disabled when you install MSSE. And when you un-install MSSE then WD is enabled again.
- The newest AVAST version is not bugfree. Assuming this is an AVAST related problem, it's best to report your problem to AVAST. AVAST explicitly has been asking for people to report bugs in their software. (Another Win 8 "app store" problem ?).
- Install Tweaking's Registry Backup. And let it automatically run upon startup. It will help you because info on Services are stored in the registry. It reduces the need for a "System Restore" by say 90%. (I have used this program to restore my registry some 10 times in the last 12 months).

I have the "paid for" version of AVAST. And the free version of Malwarebytes. I run Malwarebytes every 1 to 2 weeks to see whether AVAST has overlooked something.

If someone has e.g the AVAST AV and firewall running (I have) then one can disable MS WinDefender & MS Firewall. It increases performance of one's computer system.

There could be another good reason why Ka6uup isn't able to restore/repair the firewall (& the Firewall info in the registry). When the user runs WR's "Restore Important Services" then WR doesn't stop those Services ("net stop .......") before restoring and WR doesn't restart ("net start ......") those Services after restoring.

Time to issue an (Emergency) Update ?

I am curious what that Macrium VSS repair tool adds to the registry. Because Macrium offers a procedure to "repair VSS" that's very similar to what WR's "repair VSS" does.
http://kb.macrium.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50010.aspx

What I consider to be the main difference is that WR's "Repair VSS" doesn't start two services at the end ("net start vss" & "net start swprv") and perhaps the sequence of a number of commands. When I run WR's "Repair VSS" on my Win 7 system then nothing goes wrong. When I run Registry Backup afterwards then VSS does properly function, absolutely no problems.

@Ka6uup:
- when you run the  text file (see attachment) as a *.bat file with admin rights, does VSS function properly  afterwards ? Or is then VSS "broken" again ?
- Can you post the content of the following two keys (and all sub keys) in the registry:
"[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS]"  and
"[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\swprv]"

BTW: "Repair VSS" contains a bug. The VSS service is not being turned on (again) after the repair has finished.

Also another things that concerns me, in the log you posted "C:\Program Files\Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)\SWPRV.DLL" that file isnt part of my program.

Shane

Perhaps WR tries to update the registry with the wrong "swprv.dll" reg info ?

Some last suggestions:
- Event viewer showed two errors with "Perfnet", "event ID 2004", "Server Service", "Performance info couldn't be returned". Some GOOGLE-ing revealed that this is a "networking" problem. You could do more research with these keywords. For me, it suggests once more that WMI could be faulty/broken, fails to pull up the required info for the firewall. Or perhaps the firewall fails to pull up info from the performance counters/monitors.
- Does XP have a process/service "Services" (as well) ?
- Did you recently install some new drivers for e.g. the network(ing) hardware ? Those drivers could contain some faulty program code.
- Try to re-install the drivers for the network hardware. Those drivers also register info Windows needs. Some think Windows is very smart but the info Windows pulls up, is provided by software/drivers. I wouldn't be surprised that WMI info (*.mof) is installed by software (drivers) as well.

Windows XP ? Yes, it ABSOLUTELY DOES make a difference !!! The two files mentioned before are Win 7 files. See if you got a file called "c:\windows\system32\Firewall.cpl".  If not, then a copy of that file could be in the "c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\" subfolder and copy that to the system32 subfolder.

Did you do a system file check ? (step 3) in "Windows Repair" (sfc /scannow) ? Perhaps more files are missing.

Try this to fix the firewall problem:

Run these commands in a CMD.exe window (with admin rights):
    - regsvr32 /s  "C:\Windows\System32\FirewallControlPanel.dll"

If this doesn't help then run the second command as well.
    - regsvr32 /s  "C:\Windows\system32\FirewallAPI.dll"

(@Shane: Perhaps these 2 commands need to be included in "Repair Firewall" as well ?)

Yes, try to re-install MS Framework.
No, judging by the name of that one *.mof file, you need to re-install/repair/restart "Windows Search". But I haven't got a clue how to do that.

And let us/me know if it has helped you !

Event viewer reports 5 problems with WMI. It can't load 5 *.mof files. If you want to back up the registry with Registry Backup then make sure you do it with an account with administrator rights. Then you don't need VSS.

Some suggestions:
- check disk for bad sectors
- try if doing a System Restore will fix the problem, because it re-installs a number of system files as well.

- Did you run "Repair WMI" and "Repair Volume Shadow copy" ? The Firewall requires WMI to function properly. The message "Can't display settings" clearly suggests a broken/faulty WMI. And WMI is used to pull up A LOT OF info from your computer.
- Did you run "Reset file & registry permissions" ?
- You can use WR to switch off the MS firewall and other Services.

If you have an AV program installed then you don't need Defender. That is probably the reason why Defender has been switched off/removed.

You don't need to install multiple AV programs. It will slow down your system more. One AV suffices. I have AVAST installed and Malwarebytes. AVAST is protecting my system in real-time and I run Malwarebytes (free version) every 2 weeks.

Does your AV program have a firewall as well ? Then you can switch off Microsoft Firewall as well.

717
The Service is used by the Windows installer technology. Some programs use this technology and other don't.

1. Install the latest version of Registry Backup (v1.61) and make sure it makes a copy of the registry once a day. It's also in a subfolder of where Windows Repair is installed. The Services are registered in the registry.
2. Did you run WR's reset file & reset registry permissions ?
3. Did you run WR's "Restore Important Services to default" ?

Feedback & Suggestions / Re: Perplexed

1. There's software around that allows you to extract the MS ProductKey. I did it for Win XP in the past but I don't know if it would work on e.g. a Win 7 system
2. I know there's software around that allows an *.ISO file to be "mounted". "Mounting" an *.iso file allows the user to access that file as if was a separate drive. Perhaps that would enable you to remove any bloatware and save the new image to disk. Perhaps you're also able to extract all the brand and/or computer specific drivers for e.g. the touchpad, drives, wireless devices, mouses, screen, sound subsystem etc.

I noticed that when I used my laptop (Win XP & Win 7) for the first time the Windows system installed all these brand specific drivers as well. That means that in the Windows re-install image those installation packages/drivers are included.

Feedback & Suggestions / Re: Thumbs up for Registry Backup

More goods news about RB. Today I started my laptop and at an extremely early stage all seemed to "go to hell in a handbasket". My laptop was frozen, it kept bleeping and there wasn't any progress in the start up procedure. Tried a number of things, but to no avail. Then I rebooted my laptop and pressed F8 and managed to enter "Safe Mode", ran RB, restored the registry to an earlier date and after a reboot all was back to normal.

I thought I had to execute the more cumbersome MS System Restore but I was lucky. RB saved the day.

@chigswell: Yes, RB doens't place a shortcut on the desktop and that's why that wonderful RB remains "under the radar" for a lot of WR users.

I came across the same problems:
1. Generic icon: Perhaps this thread provides an answer:
http://forums.pcwintech.com/index.php?topic=4074

Do you have a AV program installed ? If you have two AV programs running (e.g. AVAST & MS Windows Defender) then you should switch off one AV program. I would recommend switching off MS Defender.
See this thread: http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/topic,1195.0.html

2. "Windows can't find ........": I think it's a minor bug in the installation program Tweaking .com uses for a number of its programs.

Another possibility: when Windows reads files from disk then it places the files in the filecache first before making them available to a program. That's why reading files for a second time takes less time. Try if collapsing the filecache (with e.g. CLEANMEM) causes a slowdown in reading the same file(s). If that's the case then I would start to think your harddisk is ageing.

If the AVAST firewall (or another brand of firewall) is already running on your computer then you can disable the Microsoft Firewall (Service) as well. Here's one way to do it. Use Tweaking.com's "Window Repair" (WR) !!!

1. make the following changes in the file "Services_startup.txt" (in a subfolder of WR).
- "sc config MpsSvc start= automatic"   ===>   "......... start= disabled" (MS Firewall).
- "sc config WinDefend start= automatic"   ===>   "......... start= disabled" (MS Windows Defender).
2. Tick the box "Set services to default ........." in WR.
3. Run WR & restart your computer. Done.
Following this procedure allows WR in the future to repair your MS Firewall but then the MS Firewall simply remains switched off.

What kind of documents ? Text , PDF, *.ppx, ..... ? And with what programs ? MS Word, Open Office, Foxit PDF reader, Powerpoint (viewer), ....... ?

Sounds like your AV is slowing down the opening of files. Do you have multple AV programs running ? E.g. WinDefender & AVAST ? If you have e.g. AVAST AV you can disable the WinDefend Service.

@chigwells:

- Virusses disable & turn Services off. WR's "Set Services to Default" allows to turn these services back to their default state.
- for a number of repairs WR needs to temporarily switch off one or more Services. This feature allows the user to exit WR with their favourite Service settings.
- A number of Services can simply be "disabled" without affecting the overall performance of Windows. More over, less Services running speeds up one's computer. GOOGLE it for more info. Advice: Keep a copy of the original version of this file. It allows you to go back to the installation defaults.

I read that you had a problem with a Trojan. Trojans/virusses make changes to the Windows registry. When the user installs WR then also a program called Registry Backup (RB) is installed in a WR subfolder. RB can be configured to run upon start up of one's computer as well. It would allow you to go back to a previous (virus free) state. It's a REAL pity the WR installation program "buries" the program and doesn't place a shortcut to RB on one's desktop. (Shane ???????).
