General Computer Support / Fan kicking in yet temps are good.
« on: December 06, 2020, 03:50:36 am »
Acer Laptop : W8.1 i7 6Gb Ram
Noticed fan kicking in more than usual, so installed Core Temp to monitor temp. I assumed Air intake possibly restricted with dust etc but I see the device is not running hot.
Screen shot at idle showing all well yet fan on & off, nothing loud but new unexplained behaviour.
Thoughts?

General Computer Support / Question about slow USB 2 transfer speeds.
« on: August 28, 2020, 10:45:13 am »
Question about USB 2 transfer speeds. Device i3/4Gb   W7.
Copying a video file (720p Mp4 -935Mb ) from the laptop to a Micro SD card via adapter to a USB 2 port.
Speed settled at 8 MB/second. Speed seems slow for USB 2 .
Have attached  image with SD spec. Why is it so slow?

Hi
After installing KB4541509, I get a new desktop with a "temp user profile" message.
 Recovered with System restore.
I found a reference to this issue :
https://borncity.com/win/2020/02/16/windows-8-1-update-kb4537821-kills-also-user-profiles/

Have you come across this before ?
thoughts welcome
Ran SFC /Scannow, detected and unable to fix, then ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Completed with "Component store  corruption recovered". Wont chance repeating update till I have a fuller understanding of issue & trigger.
Came across this possible explanation &solution

General Computer Support / W8.1 Freezing
« on: November 15, 2018, 01:05:16 pm »
W8.1 Freezing.
Symptoms :
W8.1 runs for 3 minutes and then freezes. access to the cursor, nothing else. Forced restart and see a change in log in detail. Previously I used a 4 digit pin, now it needed my hotmail password.
Checked :
Task Manager, no wild processes & all appeared normal. Page file, System managed. Ran System Restore which failed to detect previous snapshots. Ran SFC Scan now, OS froze after 20%.
Then time to try Tweaking Repair tool, launched app then into Safe Mode and again system froze after 3 to 4 minutes.
Now this something new. Thinking possible hardware now. Fan kicking as normal, not running hot. So reseated the SSD drive and Ram and did the battery out / hold power button. No improvement.
Digging deeper, with multiple restarts,  checked Disc Management and then  System Restore which showed 2 entries for C, one label "System" the other "Missing". (See Attach 1)  While trying Configure on the missing C drive an error indicated wrong path. (Se Attach 2)
So the only recent change was an auto upgrade to Malwarebytes trail, have disabled that on start up. No change.
So at this point I'm lost! Hope I have detailed the issue so someone (boggin) can help with diagnosis.

General Computer Support / W8.1 with 6 partitions !
« on: February 09, 2018, 05:05:00 am »
My current W 8.1 displays 6 partitions, 3 which are marked "Recovery". My question is what are they, can I see dates of creation or inspect any information on them.
The history of my Acer E!-571 (2012)
Shipped with W.8. upgraded to 8.1 and a recent custom install of 8.1.ISO due to issues with a recovery with factory image W 8. My intention would be to see if my recent install has generated a new recovery partition which I could revert to should more issues arise.
I do not wish to loose any Acer utilities in the process.

General Computer Support / Remove McAfee from W 8.1
« on: February 03, 2018, 06:06:41 pm »
 Remove McAfee from W 8.1
After performing a recovery, I used the McAfee removal tool. However there are elements remaining. How do I remove them? No entries in "Uninstall Program's".

W 8.1. Issue eratic lock ups.
Ran the repair and found 740 missing packages (related to win updates it said). Ran it again and deleted the missing packages. Ran memory diagnostic & chek disk, nada!
Event viewer : ID 33.  Activation context generation failed for "C:\WINDOWS\system32\UIRibbon.dll". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.Windows.GdiPlus,language="*",processorArchitecture="*",publicKeyToken="6595b64144ccf1df",type="win32",version="1.1.6000.16386" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

Currently when I update windows, it detects 6 current important,  downloads, installs however on reboot it reports failure on updates and removes them before completing the boot cycle. I get occasional dialogue box saying "Windows not responding, end process".  My question is about the Repair app. When I launch and go to Safe mode to run it, it goes off line in Safe mode. I go to the wirless settings and "Connect" to the wirless router, however I see a triangle on the wirless icon. So despite the 15+ odd minutes while in the DISM part I suspect nothing is connecting on line. So how can I launch the repair app with network access in safe mode?

General Computer Support / My PC is dead, can't complete post [SOLVED]
« on: December 10, 2017, 07:11:10 am »
W 7 : Motherboard Gigabyte GA-FA55M-HD2
My PC is dead, can't complete post.  I suspect a hardware issue. So diagnosis begins; The CPU fan runs and I hear the hard drive spinning up. No beeps. The screen is dead so I cant access bios.  There is a discreet Nvidia card fitted. To rule out failure of the Nvidia card I need to revert to the on board graphics via Bios. As the screen displays nothing how can I switch graphics ?
I removed the Nvidia from the PCI and got a constant tone from the board. Also shorted jumpers on the board to clear CMOS settings to achieve default settings in the hope that it would revert to the integrated graphics. Nada !
Dont wish to replace the board until I eliminate the Nvidia as causing the issue.
Thoughts ?

General Computer Support / Boot times are in need of attention
« on: February 10, 2017, 07:44:25 am »
Acer E1-571. Win 8.1 / I7 3rd gen / 6 Gb Ram
I see my boot times are in need of attention.
Performance Times:
Power on – Black screen to “Please wait”    57”
Log in   till Desktop appears, additional   33”
Icons load                             additional         16”

Disc activity (task manager) show 100% for  another 2'.30”.
Prime suspect appears to be “Service Host Local System (14)”. (see attch for more detail )
I have minimal start up programmes (see attch)

Installed & run : Defender, Malwarebites,JRT, Adaware & Hitman Pro.
SFC reads all well. I ran the tweak repair tool and attch logs though to my eye, all appears well.
This deterioration has been gradual with no precursor, and the laptop flies along otherwise.
I'm very curious about the initial 57” delay before graphics kick in.
I trust I have given you enough detail; Ideas welcome.

General Computer Support / USB bluetooth issue
« on: September 15, 2016, 06:51:53 am »
So when I connect my “i Tech” USB bluetooth adapter (V 2.0)to my Acer 8.1, device detected and drivers load. I change the bluetooth surport service to automatic & manage to pair my Anker bluetooth speakers with the laptop. However, when I power on the speakers, sound drops from the laptop and the Anker speakers work for a moment then nothing. I have the Anker inches away from the USB bluetooth device. Task manager reports Bluetooth not connected. The speakers work fine with my Android phone.
Thoughts welcome..

General Computer Support / cbs logs_makecab.exe
« on: September 14, 2016, 05:42:27 am »
I came across an interesting article on over size Cbs log file, due to issues with the action of CAB compressor (makecab.exe).

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/windows-bug-may-accumulated-junk-files-pc/

I attch my CBS.log file as I see entries like :
2016-09-14 13:06:00, Info                  CBS    SQM: Failed to start upload with file pattern: C:\WINDOWS\servicing\sqm\*_std.sqm, flags: 0x2 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]
2016-09-14 13:06:00, Info                  CBS    SQM: Failed to start standard sample upload. [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

What is happning here ?

Running W 8.1 and stable.
Am I right to assume that ccleaner removes the bloated Cbs persist log files ?

How do I uninstall Intel driver update on W8.1? No uninstaller present

Good morning all. Am running W 10 and all appears stable, however I found a folder on my E partition which seems to relate to . Net. Is it safe to delete?
Also in Disc Management I see my Sata HD with C is showing as Disc 1 and my 2nd IDE HD is showing as Disc 0. (I'v allocated my page file to Disc 0). As I said no issues but am curious about this detection. thoughts welcome.

W 10, smooth upgrade from W 7. well almost. Device Manager shows issue as Other Device with "Coprocessor". Ran Tweaking Hardware Identify and see its flagged as
NVIDIA nForce System Management Controller,NVIDIA,PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0753&CC_0B4000. So right click & get the driver, ran it, briefly got a Nvidia Image then no change, same with the 2nd detect: NVIDIA nForce System Management Controller,NVIDIA,PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0753&CC_0B40, reboot and issue still there.
MB is GF8100VM-M5 with an AMD Radeon HD 4800 graphic card. i tried reinstalling the chipset driver that came with the  GF8100VM-M5, nada.
The pc is stable and fast & the Nvidia Nforce Networking controller is ok. So no symptoms but I'm curious. (Bios set to "Initial Display PCI)

Device manager under other devices shows coprocessor missing after clean install W 10. No issue with W7 previous OS
PCI/VEN_10DE&DEV_0753&SUBSYS_1B671019&REV_A2
Motherboard D845GVSR (yes, old) I cant find a solution on line, now I have the disc that came with that board but its over 10 years old and should I do an install of all drivers from it?
All appears to be working well.

General Computer Support / W 7 HD shows as a removable drive (SOLVED)
« on: June 20, 2016, 07:07:31 am »
W 7 SP1 Desktop
Today my HD shows as a removable drive ! A single 500Gb with partitions. It also appears in Devices & Printers. And I haven't touched anything. Appears to be working ok. Thoughts?

Futher research:
 http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/my-internal-sata-device-appears-in-devices-and/722221d6-d59c-4cf7-803c-8203e6344b93

Solved this oddness by changing AHCI to SATA in the bios.

W 8.1
Odd issue here, am unable to delete 5.5 Gb .mts file. Explorer crashes when I right click this file. I can delete the other files in this folder. I ran shexview-x64 and disabled most of the context handles & ran the tweaking repair tool fully twice. Tried to delete in safe mode, no joy. I notice the green bar never fully completes. Also unable to rename the file. Thoughts..

Good evening all. W7 Update issue has been with me for the last few days.
Current behaviour “Checking for updates” runs for many hours without detecting any.
Troubleshooting steps taken,
I installed MS “fix” KB 3135445, nada.
Ran Fix WU Utility v 1.0 ( This utility will re-register a total of 114 .dll,* ocx and .ax files which are required for the proper functioning of Windows Updates. ) nada.
Cleared Windows Update Cache, following correct procedure.nada.
Ran Windows update diagnostic.diagcab which detected issues, (see attch result 1 & result 2) which flagged an error RC_DataStore code 0X800F081F. I have tried researching this to no avail.
I then ran a repair utility from the reputable “tweaking.com” the log attch “Repair_Windows_Updates” which may reveal info to those wiser than me .
I also attch a list of current updates in the system the last being Net Framework 4.6.1.
The Dell laptop is clean of infections / malware and stable. Security essentials updates do run well. So I'm out of ideas now and welcome your input .
