General Computer Support / System Check Virus
« on: March 28, 2012, 10:29:36 am »
Hey, it's me again. I have another computer problem (actually, the same one that I had last time, just not as advanced), and you helped me so well last time, I don't trust asking anyone else for advice.

Anyways, I've somehow once again acquired the System Check virus. Last time, I tried getting rid of it myself, which led me to having to reinstall Windows. My question is, what the best route to take to get rid of this thing? I'm able to launch in safe mode (in it right now), and ran avast!. It found 20 infected files, and after removing them and rebooting, apparently the System Check virus was not one of the infections removed.

There are several sites out there that help one walkthrough the cleaning of this stupid virus, but I don't want to take any steps until I get confirmation that I'm doing the right thing. Any advice?

I appreciate it the help again  thanks in advance!

Feedback & Suggestions / Shane = Virtual Hero!!!

After having a severe Windows problem (Windows would no longer even load, effectively making my laptop a rather large and expensive paper weight).

I had my wife bring the laptop to the notorious Geek Squad.....their advice (after doing nothing but watching it fail to load), would be to scratch the idea of the computer being fixed, contact the manufacturer, purchase a new Windows disc, and reformat the hard drive. They DID offer to do a diagnostics test on the system for a humble $200, but advised against that because they considered the computer to be beyond repair.

Well......forget you Geek Squad, because Shane owns you. Shane, under absolutely NO obligation, selflessly lent me his time and brain in helping me fix my computer. Not only was I able to get Windows fixed, but all of my important data (my childrens photos, resumes, and priceless home made videos) were all saved. Now, this scare was indeed my lesson to learn by not having backups of my priceless data, but Shane made absolutely sure that nothing bad was to come to my computer.

Overall, working with Shane was a wonderful experience. He helped calm me down (from outright panic mode), assured me that everything was going to be ok, and helped me step by step to fix my computer. He was extremely quick to respond every time I posted, and went above and beyond any help that I expected.

I am extremely grateful to Shane. Had it not been for him, I could have lost years of photos, videos, and data, not to mention saving me financially from whatever I would have had to pay to restore my computer.

Thank you Shane. You have a true fan and believer in me. I will be marketing your products, web site, and forum. Continue to do what you do, because you're great at it, and the people need you!

Tweaking.com Support & Help / Windows Media Server no longer working
« on: December 16, 2011, 03:34:36 pm »
Hey guys,

So I was having some problems with a few of my services being corrupted/permanently disabled due to a virus, and was advised to do a few things. The first was to download a new BFE reg code and import it to the registry, and the second was to use the AIO windows repair software.

Well, after installing the reg code and running the software, the issues that I was having before were gone, and everything seemed to have been fixed. But now, there's a new issue.

My Windows media server is no longer accessible via other devices. I use a hard wired connection for both my computer as well as my PS3, connected through a router, but now, after running the software, my PS3 can not locate the media server. I don't understand why/how this is, considering that they're DIRECTLY connected to the router, but my PS3 is no longer picking up my laptop. I use windows media server through my PS3 to view movies and whatnot, making this a rather big issue for me.

Is it possible that the software reset/reconfigured some services that were used for the media server? Any help/advice would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks!
