Once again, Shane, you have proven yourself to be a King among men! I got it fixed! Thank you so much for your time and consideration!

Honestly, I was JUST about to give up on this one. Thankfully it worked out!

Till we meet again! :-D

Hey, so I removed what I had imported on the "Import Presets" page, and continued to the "Integrate Drivers" screen. I then chose all of the drivers that you had recommended I download (except I found the XP WLAN and LAN downloads instead of using the Windows 7 ones you posted :-P). Upon selecting all the drivers (probably around 100 of them), the program continued to ask me very technical questions about the computer I would be installing the OS on, and I simply did not know the answers as they are way beyond my computer knowledge. So, I just pushed cancel, had to do this several as every time I'd press cancel, a new screen would pop up asking another very technical question. Had to push cancel probably 20 times. I then proceeded to create the .ISO file, burnt the new file, and tried on the computer. Still running into the same problem. I'm sure I probably did something/everything wrong lol

Hope y'all enjoy the movie!

Sorry for sounding so ignorant, I just want to make sure that I do everything correctly.

I extracted the mass storage driver pack. In nLite, on the "Import Presets" page, I imported the mass storage .ini that was extracted (was this correct?), and on the following page there are several options, one being to "Integrate Drivers". Do I need to mess with that, or just "Create Bootable ISO"?

Thanks!

Do I download the SATA AHCI Driver, or the SATA Computer Intel SATA Support Driver? And I will be slipstreaming both the SATA driver and the other driver pack to the windows XP .ISO file I have via Nlite?

Thanks :-D

Thank you so much Shane. I mean, this computer is really not even worth fixing (I found some on eBay for $60.....), but I have to try.

It's a Gateway TA6, no floppy drive. I searched the BIOS for anything related to sata controller, ahci, and IDE, but found nothing.

Hey, so I had to take the past week off from trying to fix her comp because of a wicked cold that spread through the family. None the less, I tried again today, and ran into an unexpected error.

Upon entering the Windows XP disc and trying to reinstall windows, it runs through a few configurations and then a screen with the following information is displayed:

"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3."

This error message exceeds the limit of my knowledge. I'm not sure at all where to go from here.....does this even sound like a fixable problem?

Once again, thanks in advance for your time Shane  :artist:

So,theoretically (if I don't screw something up....) I SHOULD be able to save all of her data/files? This is really what I'm most worried about, because stupid me made the decision to tell her beforehand that I'd be able to save all of her files, lol. Rookie mistake.

Btw, once again, thanks Shane. You're a rare breed of selfless person, and it's always a pleasure conferring with you.

Hey, so I'm having virtually the exact same problem that I had when I posted in the support forum and was mentioning windows media server no longer being available. What happened was that the virus removed key windows files, and the computer got to the point where it wouldn't even boot anymore. I'm having the same problem, but with a friends computer now.

After removing the virus(s [very much so plural]) and installing Avast!, I rebooted the computer, and now the computer is stuck on a constant reboot mode, it will reboot, go through the windows screen, and then crash to a blue screen and repeat the process again.

My question is, will I be able to reinstall Windows on this system as I did with my system? This computer has Windows XP instead of Windows 7.....will I still be able to reinstall windows AND save all of the documents already on the system?

Thanks! I really want to get this thing fixed for her.

Ok, so I ran Malwarebytes, removed the infections (8 of them), then rebooted. Ran the tdsskiller and it found nothing. It was really weird before I rebooted man, like, sounds coming from NOWHERE (as if an advertisement/commercial were playing, but nothing was open!). Since rebooting after malwarebytes, nothing.

But my desktop has still not returned to it's original state, nor has the start menu (with all my most used applications and whatnot listed), and nothing on the right of the tab where it normally says "Documents" "Control Panel" and whatnot, the only thing listed there now is "Computer". Is there anyways I can reset these to default?

ALSO, there's still a "System Check" file located on my desktop. Is it safe to delete this file?

Thanks!

That's funny Shane, because literally 2 minutes before I saw your post, Java popped up and asked me if I'd like to install an update (I said no, since I was busy trying to save my computer lol). I never would have thought that an outdated java or flash would have been the problem, but I will be keeping them updated from now on!

And also funny, I was thinking the only thing noticeably wrong with the computer are the missing desktop files, but RIGHT after I got done reading your second post, a random pop-up occurred (had never happened before). So I'm guessing rootkit.........

Thanks, I assumed that I would end up using malwarebytes, just wanted to make sure that there were no steps before/during/after using malwarebytes that I need to do in order to safely remove it and restore windows.

Right now, I'm just going to follow the instructions from this site:

Hopefully it'll work

Hey, it's me again. I have another computer problem (actually, the same one that I had last time, just not as advanced), and you helped me so well last time, I don't trust asking anyone else for advice.

Anyways, I've somehow once again acquired the System Check virus. Last time, I tried getting rid of it myself, which led me to having to reinstall Windows. My question is, what the best route to take to get rid of this thing? I'm able to launch in safe mode (in it right now), and ran avast!. It found 20 infected files, and after removing them and rebooting, apparently the System Check virus was not one of the infections removed.

There are several sites out there that help one walkthrough the cleaning of this stupid virus, but I don't want to take any steps until I get confirmation that I'm doing the right thing. Any advice?

I appreciate it the help again  thanks in advance!

After having a severe Windows problem (Windows would no longer even load, effectively making my laptop a rather large and expensive paper weight).

I had my wife bring the laptop to the notorious Geek Squad.....their advice (after doing nothing but watching it fail to load), would be to scratch the idea of the computer being fixed, contact the manufacturer, purchase a new Windows disc, and reformat the hard drive. They DID offer to do a diagnostics test on the system for a humble $200, but advised against that because they considered the computer to be beyond repair.

Well......forget you Geek Squad, because Shane owns you. Shane, under absolutely NO obligation, selflessly lent me his time and brain in helping me fix my computer. Not only was I able to get Windows fixed, but all of my important data (my childrens photos, resumes, and priceless home made videos) were all saved. Now, this scare was indeed my lesson to learn by not having backups of my priceless data, but Shane made absolutely sure that nothing bad was to come to my computer.

Overall, working with Shane was a wonderful experience. He helped calm me down (from outright panic mode), assured me that everything was going to be ok, and helped me step by step to fix my computer. He was extremely quick to respond every time I posted, and went above and beyond any help that I expected.

I am extremely grateful to Shane. Had it not been for him, I could have lost years of photos, videos, and data, not to mention saving me financially from whatever I would have had to pay to restore my computer.

Thank you Shane. You have a true fan and believer in me. I will be marketing your products, web site, and forum. Continue to do what you do, because you're great at it, and the people need you!

And the results are in.................IT'S FIXED! WOOOOOOOOOO! Things look a bit different, but nothing I can't get used to!
I don't know how to thank you Shane, honestly, because of your kindness and generosity, you've saved me further heart ache, not to mention potentially saving my wallet (and helping me to keep my sanity!

You've successfully turned my nightmare into a positive, and for that, I applaud and thank you.

Eternally grateful,
Kharv

Ok, so I've burnt the disc and booted via the dvd-rom. Now, I'm choosing which version of Windows to install. I don't have that multi-colored sticker on my laptop stating which version of windows it is, but I'm pretty sure that it was either Windows 7 Basic or Windows 7 Premium. Is it going to make a big difference if I choose the wrong one?

K, thanks bunches, I will be downloading the iso right now. Is there any specific way that I need to burn this iso (I vaguely remember having to burn iso's uniquely), or can I just straight copy the file to the disc and burn?

Oh, btw, my wife says she wants to hug you lol

Oh, and the reason as to why I'm still able to access this site, I'm using my old desktop. It features a lovely 2.7 ghz hard drive with a whole half gig of memory! Circa 2003 I believe.....and it's in just as bad if not worse condition than my non-functioning laptop, but is equipped with a DVD burner, so if we're able to get a disc, I shouldn't have a problem burning it.

K, just tried Last known good configuration, twice, with the same result. Man, I did not expect that running a microsoft security product would land me in such hot water. This is just dreadful. Is there a way to find a windows 7 copy online? When we bought the computer, it came with no windows disc (which was odd to me). My wife claims that we "had the opportunity to download the disc", but that we never did (I don't recall this opportunity at all....)

Ok, so after pushing F8, it leads me to a screen with several options. These are in order: Repair your computer, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Enable Boot Logging, Enable low-resolution video (640x480), Last Known Good Configuration (advanced), Directory Services Restore Mode, Debugging mode, Disable automatic restart on system failure, Disable driver signature enforcement, Start Windows Normally.

Sorry for the long list, figured it'd be best to paint the picture best I can so you know just what I'm seeing. After clicking Safe Mode, it shows Loading Windows Files, and scrolls down the list of files loaded. Then in turns to a black screen, goes to the dell load screen, and then back to the Windows Error Recovery screen (asking to launch startup repair or start windows normally).

I have to say I at least expected it to start in safe mode. Should I try one of the other options?

And just to reiterate, thank you so much, honestly.

Thank you so much man, I'm seriously freaking out here (to the point of feeling physically ill lol). I can't seem to boot into safe mode, when starting the comp, first thing that pops up is the Dell boot screen (allowing one to click f2 for setup or f12 for bios), then it goes to the Windows loading screen, and appears to try and load. Then a beeping noise comes from the laptop, and it goes to a black screen. Then the screen pops up for if I'd like to run system repair or try to run windows normally. If I click to try to run windows normally, it just repeats the same process until it goes back to that same screen.
