Hi - This is a machine I had in "mothballs" for a while.  I performed all the updates and they seemed to go well.  Before the last update, I had a printer connected by USB and my MAS connected by cat 6 through my NetGear router.

But, now those are no longer accessible.  I have attached an image which describes the situation.
What could be wrong here?

OK, machine has been stable for almost a week.  I did one windows update for my Android phone connection.
while applying it, the machine re-booted.

I figured that there was a required re-boot that I did not see.

But after re-booting, I saw something else that was on my machine years ago.  Machine was asking to me to insert the NaturalReader CD ROM.

I canceled this and continued to use my machine.  One of the programs I use is xxxxxx HD.  the xxxx part is something I can never remember so I normally just type in hd at the start search box.  Once I did that, the screens went blank and the keyboard and mouse went out (I.E. no light on the KB for caps log or numb lock).

I thought this was strange so I had to reboot by taking out power.  This time I did nothing else after canceling the NaturalReader dialog.

Now I am un-installing the NaturalReader to see what happens.

OK, so after un-installing NaturalReader typing HD and pressing enter did not re-boot machine.  Avast report still 13 registry enteries for NaturalReader are there.  Should I just forget about them?

I do not understand this.  I have not used NaturalReader for years.  What could have happened?

Could it be that HD <enter> is some kind of Windows command that I am unaware of?

OK, Boggin.  Never mind.  I figured it out.

Thanks to you and jraju for your help.

Happy Weekend to you today.  (Memorial day over here.)

Hey wait, you prolly have memorial day there also with Beaches of Normandy and all that.

So, Happy Memorial day!

ok. Boggin.

I had trouble finding the etierhnet icon but finally fount it and did all your said adding the DNS addresses.

So, now the ethernet icon is a blue ball so that seems like progress.  Thanks.

But, now it says conneted to type 3 network which is public and must connect to type 2 loccqal or business.

How it that done?

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Boggin,

My fault for not make it clear that I have a wired broadband CAT 6 connection.

I thought I could find the properties of that and follow your instruction re PROPERTIES.

bUT, i COULD NOT FIND THAT.
wHAT SHOULD i DO SINCE i HAVE A WIRED CONNECTION.

iT CONNECT TO lan AND OTHER MACHINE IN THE lan FINE.

sorry caps.

Howdy Boggin,

Well, I do not see any error as:

ipconfig /flushdns
     and
ipconfig /registerdns

were the commands you had in the script.

anyway, I performed them again and then at START I did

inetcpl.cpl    ENTER

AND THEN CHANGED PAGE TO WWW.GOOGLE.COM and APPLY and OK

I still get DNS may be unavailable message

I did what you said and rebooted.

Howdy,

I have a vanilla W7 that has worked on my LAN and INTERNET at a NY location.  I have moved to a FL location and the machine connects to my LAN (via my new NetGear INTERNET HUB) but I can not get a browser going.  Yet I have another machine that I moved that does connect to the INTERNET.

What should I look for to determine the problem?  Thanks in advance.

59
OK, I am going to do what you suggest Satnow, but firts I am gong to attempt restore of system to another machine so that I know I can get back to where I am in case something goes wrong.  I may take more than a few days to find a machine which is stuitable for restore.

60
Thanks, Satrow, but I do not understand how to do this.  I have a good Hitaghi 2 TB drive that is labeled H, and the SSD is C.  I tried swapping the SATA channels but when I went to boot I got the message No MstrBook.  I switch back again and now it boots.

I am fearful that I may damage machine.  I have GFS backup running each evening, but I have never restored from that and am worried it is is OK.

Samsung says that Magician just does not support the drive I have.  I find that very weird; I just do not know how they can sell a drive with no support tools.

61
The SSD is working and has W7 on it.  I had to disconnect the HDD W7.  Samsung magician still does not recognize the Samsung SSD.  Dunno what to do about this.  Samsung has no answer.  Will use it the way it is for a while.  It seems stable.  Took latest important updates with no problem.  More to come.

62
Thanks for the info.

OK, so now I am several days into using this SSD.  Problems every once in a while.  Rebooted in the middle of working last night at 8:45 PM.  But, came back OK.

Occasional messages about files missing, etc --- but it may be the app I am using; support for that app does not unerstand them.

Samsung, the SSD manufacturer, has a "Magician" that is supposed to support the SSD, but it does not work with the SSD version I have and they have no answer when it will be fixed.

I am using Reflect to make backup images; it seems OK; this is what I used to create (move) W7 to SSD.

I want to let this "settle" for a while before updating to W10.

Again thanks for ALL your help.  I will keep you posted of changes, etc.

63
Thanks Satnow.   Sad to hear, but I have mcuh to learn.  W7 updated 100% --- no problems with it.  maybe I will call Samsung.  Will let you know.

64
HOWDY,

Yes, below.

K is the Samsung.
H is a drive I use for backup only.
C is main W7 drive.

65
Thanks, Boggin, but I do not understand.  What does hibernate have to do with the SSD?

66
Howdy Satnow and Boggin,

WEI for drive is still 5.9 while all else is at 7.9.  Somehow (even thought I F12) booted from Samsung SSD I am stil on the HHD.  I discovered some tools in Reflect that might help, but I do not yet feel knowledgeable enough to use them.  I will study them.  There is a thing also call Samsung Magician --- another item to understand.  Thanks for all your help.

67
I guess what I am wondering is:  Do I have to tell w7 that i am on an ssd?  There must be some way to definitely tell if i am on ssd or hdd.

68
OK, but is the image bootable or just image to be restored and then be bootable?

69
OK, so maybe i should " restoring with a system image".
How do I do that with reflect?

70
Also, I did a performance monitor and the result is 5.9 --- the same number as the hhd number.

71
I did a clone to the ssd of the win7 c drive at the time of the clone the ssd was drive K.  See Reflect screens above.  So, W7 should be on SSD.  I booted with ssd and system slow.  Seems slower than hhd (or maybe about the same).

73
OK, Boggin.  Just talking about w7 here.

The reflect completed, but theres does not seem to be any change in performance.  See attached.

What could be wrong.

74
UGG.  Sound bad.  OK, my Win7 C is a 2 TB drive (1.21 free of 1.81 TB).  The SSD is (now) blank 2 TB - I have a picture here.  Will I have the same problem?

75
OK, false alarm.  I assigned a disk letter and now it is visible.  sorry to have bothered you Boggin.

I just update Reflect to v7.1.3169 and have started the Clone operation of w7 hdd to ssd.

After a few minutes I got a message from the Disk Management section of Computer Management saying "action failed to complete".  I noticed that the assigned letter of Drive K was now gone from the disk management window, BUT the reflect was still operating --- progress bar moving..  Drive K is also missing from the explorer view of all disk drives.

Overall Progress 1% and Current Progress 1% of Reflect.  So, I guess that Refect works at the raw device level and does not care about K anymore.  Hope I am right and not wasting our time here.  I will report when it be done.
