Shane:
It would seem we are now going in circles.  Earlier today I sent you a link to a solution to the problem of the missing "Windows modules Installer".  It involves playing with the registry and includes terms I'm not familiar with.  I asked if instead, there is a software solution..download a new windows modules installer.
Willy 2 replied by sending me a link to a solution which involves modifying the registry and by the way is the same exact solution I sent you this morning, for which I'm still not qualified to attempt.
SFC /SCANNOW does not work on my pc, nor does your program which I'm guessing does the same thing.

So, now I know after 5 years what is preventing updates and service packs from being installed on my pc.  The question is do you think you can help me?

Your windows is really screwed up and it is going to take a lot to try and fix it.

Instead the best thing to do would be a repair install, this repair install would also have SP1 already on it, Windows will get reinstalled while keeping your programs and files.

First thing you need is a Windows 7 cd with SP1 already on it. You can grab that here
https://sites.google.com/site/linuxlablibrary/windows-iso

A iso file is a image of a cd or in this case a dvd, then you can use a program like imgburn to burn the image back to a blank dvd-r
http://imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Then once you have the dvd ready you just follow this guide
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Not only will this get Windows repaired and working again but SP1 will already be with it. :cheesy:

The best solution is indeed to re-install Win 7.

1. If I have the disk to do the repair, how does the ISO file happen and why do I have to burn a dvd? Confused.
2. Will my pictures, music, video, program files be affected?

- No, your personal files won't be touched. But I would recommend to back them up any way. Better safe than sorry.

You need the newer dvd because it is Windows 7 with Service pack 1 already on it. If you have your original dvd of Windows then that wont work.

Just follow the instructions I gave you and you will be fine. :-)

Shane,
Which of the many ISO files do I download?  Is there a charge for this?

- Another recommendation: In the subfolder "C:\SWsetup" HP has put all the drivers for your system (sound, touchpad, etc.) in that folder. Copy that entire folder to e.g. a USB stick. Just in case you need to re-install Win 7.
- Do you have a 32 bit or a 64 bit Home premium system ?
- These files are free, provided you've got a MS license key.

Download the one that matches your version.

So Windows 7 Home Prem. SP1 64 bit.

No there isnt a charge because you are just grabbing the setup cd, you are not getting a new cd key or anything like that.

You need the key that starts with "4FG99-..........". That's the license key.

This machine should have a recovery partition and as shell24 is going to back up personal files, then perhaps it would be better to factory reset it, although would have to reinstall any programs installed since new and the product keys for any paid for programs will be displayed in Belarc Advisor as well as the Windows product key http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

BTW Willy2 - ironically WU doesn't work in Safe Mode with Networking as it doesn't load any services it considers would make the computer unsafe.

Just another thing to try before going the whole hog with the repair install and that is to boot up with the Win 7 SP1 install disk - select Repair your Computer then navigate to the Recovery Environment and select Command Prompt.

You can change the Boot order by tapping F12 as you switch on, select CD/DVD - insert the disk and press enter.

You will be momentarily prompted to press any key to boot from CD/DVD.

At the command prompt type bcdedit |find "osdevice" and press enter (that is the pipe symbol before find)

Using whichever letter it gives for the partition enter (assuming C: ) sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows

When the scan is complete let us know what it reports and type exit - press enter to close the window - remove the disk - click on Restart then try Windows Updates again.
