No Idea What is Wrong With My Comp
« on: March 31, 2012, 02:27:57 AM »
1st thing to say is: My Computer is a netbook. No disk drive and it didn't come with any flash drives
I am using a USB to put programs from my 'Working' netbook onto the 'Non Working' one.

It is running Windows XP Professional.

When I log into windows I get this Error message: explorer.exe - Application Error The Application failed to initialize properly (0xc000007b) Click OK to Terminate the Program

I Click OK But My desktop never loads, just a blank wallpaper, No taskbar either. I can run the Task Manager by pressing ctrl alt del, but I can't really run any programs. I always get the above error message.

Out of all the Antivirus programs I have tried, only one has found a virus. But When I tried to do something about it, the antivirus program quit working and won't start back up again.

System Restore won't work.

I have tried the All In One program, but it doesn't do me any good.

Oh, and I think (Not too sure) the CD is in my netbook. While attempting to find out what I can and can't do with my computer, I came across a program. When I open it, a page comes up, that says 'Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP' Beneath that is a list of options. One of which is 'Install Windows XP' I clicked on it but it didn't do anything. I even tried all the other options, but the only one that worked was titled 'Install Optional Windows Services'

If anyone can shed some light for me I would greatly appreciate it. Any antivirus software that will work with this dilemma would be great. Give me honest feedback here, I don't want this computer to be fried, but if this is a lost cause, please let me know.

If you need any additional information let me know and I will do my best to give it to you.

The first step is to make sure this isnt a hardware problem :-)

So first run a chkdsk on the drive and do a bad sector check and let me know the results.

Then we need to do a memory test. Use MS's memory test http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Let it run for 30 min or so and see if you get any errors.

Now to boot the memory test you will need to make a usb stick bootable (This is how you can reinstall windows if you ever need to)

Just google "iso to usb bootable" and you will get a ton of different ways. Find one that works for you :-)

Another trick that I do...

Download the Ubuntu iso
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

This will let you run Ubuntu Linux without installing it. And you make the USB bootable for it with
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/#button

If you need to reinstall windows you can use Ubuntu to boot up and get your data off the drive, you will have network and internet access with it

 I think it's fried. I turned it on and it gives me a black screen that says 'NTLDR is missing Press ctrl+alt+del to restart'

And I don't really have an extra flash drive to use for the bootable thing. Would an MP3 player work? My old one looks alot like a flash drive.

Also, how would I go about reinstalling windows if I don't have a CD?

You need a usb stick so you can make it bootable. Wal mart has them for $5

Your hard drive may be bad, we really need to do that bad sector check!

But I can't get onto windows. I barely even make it past the Dell Logo screen, then it goes black and tells me that NTLDR is missing. I press ctrl alt del like it says but it's like it's on repeat. Dell Logo, black screen, Dell logo, black screen and so on.

This just blows my mind. I was just on it, then I shut it down, ate dinner, got your reply then I turn it on and POOF dead computer. I'm only glad that I got all my work onto the USB before it happened.

What would I have to do if the hard drive is bad? It would make sense though, it's been through hell and back.

If the drive is bad then you will need a new drive. Bad memory can do this as well.

First thing you are going to need is a usb drive. Then we can get some bootable tools to do the scans :-)

Oh, you never answered my question about the mp3 player. I've been using it for odd files like a flash drive, It looks a lot like one. Do you think it would work?

^^^ Follow the link, it'll show you what I'm talking about. I'm not good with describing things.

Honestly I dont know. I never tried using a one for it.

It is just a store drive that the player reads off of. But you have to format and wipe it, not sure if that will mess up the player though.

Eh... It's been messed up for a while, and I actually have formatted it. I was going to use it for my college, but lost it and bought a flash drive. I found the player the other night though. It's always worth a try, right? I don't really have anything to lose now.

On the USB Installer I can't find the ISO file they want me to select. It's a bit confusing, but could you help me. I already downloaded Ubuntu desktop. I will keep trying until I get your reply.

The Ubuntu file you download should have been the iso file. You select that file

Once you have Ubuntu up and since you are running it off the usb you can access your hard drive and run some repairs on it :-)

Ubuntu has some built in repairs for it.
