Maybe if I had the correct syntax for the dos command, I could do the copy paste through the command prompt run as administrator?

That's going back a bit

I think it would be something like copy [path]\file c:\Windows\System32 but haven't a clue what the path would be for where the .dll is.

Have you tried the drag & drop onto System32 ?

OK, so I tried that and did drag it into the System32 folder. It said it was moving it. So then it disappeared from the original place I unzipped it, but there is still only one copy of the file in the folder. It didn't ask me about replacing it or anything. So how do I know if it worked? Both the old file (which I saved a copy in another place) and the new one have the same modified information....

So, does it show up in System32 ?

You could create a restore point then delete it in System32 and then drag it back in again so that you know what is in there is a fresh copy and then run the regsvr32 ole.dll to see what that reports.

If it's worked then so should your printer.

Is Event Viewer reporting anything related - and do your restore points go back to before running WR ?

I don't know about the event viewer, it's saying a bunch of stuff including errors about Bonjour Service that go way back so I quit...The printer works on Bonjour Printing Services, but there is a bonjour also included in itunes. I do have restore points that go back before WR. I posted a question as to whether I should do a restore but got no advice on that one. I'm still nervous about that deleting ole32.dll thing...

I can't find in the thread what you did with Bonjour before, but I would expect there to be only one in services.msc - you type that after clicking on the Start button and press enter.

iTunes have been known to create a myriad of problems, but not sure if uninstalling that would also take out Bonjour in which case you may have to reinstall the printer.

One thing you could try is to go to the printer support site and download the drivers for it which could include the ole.dll.

When you dragged the .dll onto System32 I would have thought that you should have gotten the file already exists etc. so not sure why you didn't.

OK...First, I uninstalled printer (several times) uninstalled Bonjour printing services, unplugged printer, then plugged the printer back in, reinstalled Bonjour Printing Services and reinstalled the printer as I have been doing for several years...no good. So then I did a restore from a point created a week ago when I knew my printer was still working. See the attached picture ...So now I can not even do that! I may try a restore point that was supposed created by WR right before I did the first repair. So I think it's a good thing I didn't delete that ole32.dll file yet as I may not have been able to do a restore...
This "missing file" may have to do with that Windows update that I deleted. I would like to try reinstalling that again if that might work... As far as if the new ole32.dll file is a fresh one, I will know if the crashes stop; although, sometimes I don't have them for a few weeks and then I may get them alot like I have the last couple of days since I started the WR program.
I wish there was something more I knew what to do.. :teeth:

I have downloaded the update KB3068708 from Microsoft. This is the one I deleted and may have caused my printer problems. Should I run it. Deleting it did not correct the system file check errors that are still being described. I will wait to hear from someone who knows if this is something I should do, because I am at my wit's end!!!

The failed restore point is saying it like it is in that your AV program is the probable cause of it failing.

To get round that, boot up into Safe Mode and try whichever point you thought when the printer was working.

The best way to look for relevant errors in Event Viewer is to look for those with a date and time stamp of the most recent problem.

Edit - You should be okay to reinstall the KB.

when you restore in safe mode it changes the file back to the last restore point lol
you need to make sure to have the file in the system32 folder then re run regsvr32 ole32.dll
and when its successful reboot and try the printer

If the restore is still failing in Safe Mode then boot back up into the advanced boot options and select Repair your Computer and navigate to the Recovery Environment where you can select the Restore point options - see if that is successful.

You can still choose your restore points by clicking on Show more restore points, but if the one you have been trying had continued to fail, then choose an earlier one.

My eyes can't make those out - it's better to save pics with the .png extender, but if you click on each update and then on More info, it will tell you what they are for - or you could list the KBs with the name of them except where they are listed as Security and then with a Google we can find the details of each.

How did you get on trying the restore points from the Recovery Environment ?

That update is just one of MS's spies to see which machines are Win 10 compatible, so I can't see what effect that would have on your printer.

You are probably right, but something happened to my machine from that or the WR that disabled Bonjour Printing services ability to get it to print. Even if the uninstall did cause it, I'm not hopeful that the reinstall will fix it, but I need to try, I'm in my truck now, so it will be a little later. I'll let you know what happens.....

Don't forget to let us know what those updates are and then try the restore points as I've suggested.

I'll be shoving off shortly to do my evening meal but will be back later.
