OK running it now

Not having any luck with the event viewer.

I guess I don't understand. I thought if I buy a new copy of windows 7 that it would have everything??? I guess not, I take your word for it because you are way above me about this (They still sell windows 7 at walmart, best buy and frys)

I don't need to worry about backing up anything to save in the laptop.

I called Sony yesterday and they also recommended the recovery discs so I guess I will go with that. They gave me phone numbers of 3 different vendors to get it from.

I will send you the report that I am running now when it finishes.

You won't see a chkdsk report until you have executed that command.

Walmart's equivalent in the UK is ASDA but I've never known them to sell anything like that.

You have to be careful with Win 7 install disks (especially online) as they aren't all retail copies and are OEM versions which mean once they have been installed onto a machine, they aren't transferrable to another machine and sometimes MS doesn't recognise the product keys as being valid.

I had this similar problem, I corrected it by going into the taskscheduler;

running each service; one by one

making sure each service is set to run in win7 too

have you tried to reset services too?

After a factory reset I tend to wait until I've installed my AV program, updated Adobe products and Java, plus reinstalling the programs I want back on and then run the Windows Updates overnight as they take about 9 hours on mine.

While it's unlikely that your daughter would need Java in the normal course of events, if it's installed then it's best kept up to date but disabled in browsers.

You can do this by going Start - type java then select Configure Java and under the Security tab uncheck the box for Enable in browsers - Apply - OK - OK

If your daughter lands on a site or an application prompts that Java is required, then recheck its box.

As Java has been subject to a number of exploits, this is the safest way to keep Java installed when not required.

As for the bloatware, you could vet the Recommended list with your daughter that PC Decrapifier displays.

I wouldn't think you would get any obsolete Windows Updates, but after they have completed and you've sorted what your daughter wants removing/leaving on the machine, go Start - type disk cleanup - right click on Disk Cleanup and select Run as administrator.

If it finds substantial space saving on the default settings, let it clean those and then do a defrag.

We should also start to ask What BIOS version they running?
likely the culprit for larger disks that in the R/W sections should be updated too..

Hey Boggin and others that have chimed in I just want to give a final update here:

I was given 3 different vendors to get recovery discs to fix this laptop, 2 said they did not have them and the third said they would have to look and they would get back to me which they didn't.

So I turned to the Sony tech support and went ahead and paid for the premium support and they diligently tried to get it working for many hours and failed. Since no recovery discs were available they suggested that if I purchased a new Windows 7 Home Premium that they would install it along with all the necessary drivers and things I needed.

So this is what I did. It was a very long process but the Sony people did what they said and got it all installed and is now all working!

So in addition to this I also purchased a 1TB external hard drive and made a new system image of it as well as system images of 2 other laptops that I have.

Glad you were eventually able to get it sorted - albeit an expensive fix.

It seems strange that Sony didn't have its own OEM Recovery disks for your model.

Where did the new Win 7 Home Premium come from ?

Yeah Sony subs their recovery discs out to different vendors. I was surprised also. It is just an electronic copy and they really should just give it to you free since you already paid for it when you bought the lap top!

I got a new copy of the Windows 7 Home Premium from Fry's Electronics

It was an expensive fix $100 for Premium Sony Support and $100 for the new Windows 7 but it was still a lot cheaper than buying a new laptop. I really needed this laptop working because it is the one my 2 kids use for school stuff. I don't want them on my wife's or my laptop jacking things up with gaming, and indiscriminate downloads!

Yes, I agree that $200 could be a good investment to prevent them screwing up either your wife's or your laptop

The reason I was asking about the source of Win 7 was because MS no longer supply anything Win 7 and you have to be careful when buying from other sources that you don't end up with an OEM install disk, which can have its own problems.

I think it was an OEM disc and Sony did have issues with it but they got it all working.

Can you go Start - type activate windows and press enter to ensure MS recognise it as a valid install.

With Sony techs doing the job I thought it probably would be but with OEM installs, MS can be finicky at times and it's always worth checking.
