So having done a repair install using the generic key, could I change the actual activation key so that it recognises the generic key (not COA sticker) as the valid key and how would I do that ?

You sure can, you just need a tool to do it for you or you can do it manually.

What is the mfg of your machine so I can look up the key and cert file? Also was it Windows 7 home prem.?

Did the Dell Inspiron 1300 come with 7? You said it was upgrade from xp, if it was then did you have your own key code you used for the upgrade?

If so you can still do the repair install, just use that key instead :-)

The oem cert and key only works with systems that came with windows 7 installed, because the bios would have the slic table info, otherwise it wouldnt.

I got the laptop as is, I only know of the upgrade from the sticker. I do not have any DVD's or key codes
