So if your going to have your own app store they wanted a way to force people to use it. Thus you have metro. They didn't do the change to try and make things better they made the change to try and make more money.

I respect your point of view about the methods adopted to introduce Metro, but I think they did well to force Metro.
Instead the crucial point is how Metro looks today and for me it's still an incomplete interface, despite their marketing campaigns claim the opposite.

In my play book if your going to change something like that you make it more efficient, not worse.

But you know that all big changes require time. And in the current state of economy you have to do big things in an unreasonable short time.

They put back a start button but not a start menu. You click the start button and it takes you back tot he metro screen.

With "Show the Apps view automatically when I go to Start" option you'll see a list of all your programs without redirecting to Metro interface (the main one with squares).
The more I try Windows 8.1, the more I don't miss start menu at all, especially with the new Apps view.

I think they have other problems than a start menu debate, for example they need to unify desktop environment with metro and in the same time re-thinking control panel (having two different control panels for Desktop and Metro is not the best solution indeed).
Win-X menu seems too limited by default, the old context menu is far superior and more customizable.

Windows 7 is best.. Easy to work with and simple to apply

Windows 8.1 is the fastest Windows I ever seen.
Settings are mixed between modern UI and desktop, and in my imagination desktop should be removed as it is expected now.

But for me light is better. No more headaches for an already optimized OS.

I reproduced this bug on another XP, then I arrived to a conclusion.

In both OSes, I have a software called AnyDVD, which installs a driver component named SPTD.

Disabling SPTD driver through regedit as suggested here, RC seems ok now. No .new temporary extension in SYSTEM hive.

Odd thing is, I have AnyDVD with SPTD in another machine with Win7, no problem there (probably because my Windows 7 version is at 64 bit).

When I ran it a second time before rebooting, I was able to reproduce these access denied errors on the same XP machine:

C:\Windows\System32\config\default.new
5: Denied access.
C:\Windows\System32\config\sam.new
5: Denied access.
C:\Windows\System32\config\security.new
5: Denied access.
C:\Windows\System32\config\software.new
5: Denied access.
C:\Windows\System32\config\system.new
5: Denied access.

So, the error handling works for me too.

Is it possible that your program is not compatible with User Profile Hive Cleanup Service?

I am using the Windows API and I just pass a string to it, I dont think spaces should hurt. Plus the system hive isn't getting replaced while the others are.

So I want to see a screen shot to see if there was something different in the path to the system hive.

I want to see what it shows for the file paths for each one. I am wondering if there might be a char it doesnt like.

In this XP system I'm logged with an username who has a space inside it (i.e. Robert Connor).

Maybe your program doesn't support it.

Turn off the AV program & Process lasso and try again. The AV is the most likely candidate that prevents Registry Compressor from "meddling" with the registry.

Of course I tried both of them, I can still confirm it.

No, it doesn't, even after deleting .old and .new files.

This issue regards all compression options.

I have Panda cloud antivirus free in the background + Windows Firewall + Process lasso Pro edition (last stable version with default settings, no changes).

SYSTEM and NTUSER.DAT Registry hives were not compressed in my XP SP3 Pro, even in safe mode, using the best compression option.

I have some compressed hives named as SYSTEM.NEW and NTUSER.DAT.NEW.

What about in safe mode? I knw a lot of protection programs protect their files so viruses cant remove them.

That worked! After a reboot, a new file was generated with all permissions in their place. Now the task works correctly, both manually and scheduled.

Is the file in use? Try turning off Microsoft Security Client and see if you can manually delete it yourself.

Real time protection is disabled, but the problem persists.
I can't assign any type of permission to that file.
