Tweaking.com Support & Help / WR Failed to Repair Reparse Points
« on: July 18, 2016, 04:07:50 am »
Not sure whether this is academic as I'm intending to upgrade this Win 7 laptop to Win 10, but having run the Reparse Repairs on the 63 it had snagged, they remain as being unrepaired after a second Pre-Scan.

Info at the bottom of the Pre-Scan said 0 system files so they may not be significant, but following a factory reset, Windows Updates have been unobtainable.

Also 3.9.5 seems to be a bit large for a laptop's screen resolution in Safe Mode with the red X just about reachable.

Tweaking.com Support & Help / WR Caused Serious Problems For Me
« on: July 12, 2016, 03:32:59 pm »
Was at a loose end so decided to run WR.

When I first opened it there was an error message at the top but as it was overlaid I was unable to read it.

Reinstalling the program got rid of the error message.

I used Option 5 to create a registry back up and ran the Pre-Scan, which found quite a large number of Reparse Points to repair and which it did.

Created another registry back up and ran the main repairs.

Watching them scroll through quite quickly I was able to glimpse a number of file not found or access denied.

After completion and the reboot, while everything appeared on the screen of my Toshiba Win 7 x64 HP laptop, nothing worked - everything was frozen and had to do a power shutdown.

This was the same after a few more reboots which included a cold boot.

I had to boot up into Safe Mode to open the program to use the registry restore before it would work normally again.

I had this same problem with 3.9.3

When I checked the logs, they were mainly repair error logs rather than repair logs.

General Computer Support / Missing Reparse Point
« on: January 31, 2016, 05:11:54 am »
Thought I'd run the Pre-Scan out of curiosity, although I don't have any apparent problems and the scan came up with this one missing -

Original Path - C:\Users\dub_cm_auto\Application Data

Target Path - C:\Users\dub_cm_auto\AppData\Roaming

Ran the Pre-Scan twice in Safe Mode with Networking and having hit the Repair Reparse Points button each time, it stills snags it as a problem.

Any ideas ?

  • Calling Checking If Link Folder Exists
  • Link Folder Does Exist, We need to remove it as we can't make Reparse Points for exisiting folders.
  • Setting Owner On Folder (So We Have A Better Chance For Permission To Remove It).
  • Calling RemoveDirectoryW (Only Removes Empty Folders, Just In Case)
  • RemoveDirectoryW Returned An Error, Error: 0 - The directory is not empty.

I am 84 years of age.
I rely on my computer to function properly because of my age, inexperience, and the fact that I do not understand them too well.
I am experiencing difficulty with ERROR Code Ox8000FFFF - in that it will no longer allow me to Backup Automatically.
My last automatic backup was back in September 2015.  The Manual backup is unaffected, so I have been using this, but it is not as convenient as being able to Schedule a backup.   I tried to attach 'Screen shots' with this, without success.
No matter !  The process I have been following is:-  Schedule a Backup to take place on Sunday at 1300hrs. Monthly.   Attach an external HDD to a spare USB drive and wait for it to complete satisfactorily at the appointed time.  Back in September 2015 the Backup failed, so I tried again by Clicking Control Panel – choosing ‘Back up your computer’ and then ‘Back up files’.   After a while a Box appears in the bottom RH corner which states ‘The last Backup Failed- click here for Details’ which I do.   Another Box appears showing BACKUP STATUS and informing me that ‘The last Backup did not complete successfully. (DETAILS).  A click on this tells me ‘A shadow copy could not be created for the following reason’
– Catastrophic Failure (Ox8000FFFF) together with to-days date and time and Backup location USB – HDD (F:)  I am told by people who know, that this is probably caused by an infection at some point, but that they do not know how to be rid of it.   The normal Avast free  antivirus does not detect it, neither does Malwarebytes anti-malware.  The latest advice, which came highly recommended, was to try your website Tweaking.com
I have managed to download this application but I am spoilt for choice as to which section to RUN.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated if you can help with this particular problem.
Thank you............................Bernard.

Hi Paul - I've opened a new thread for you in Computer Help as all help is given in the open forum rather than PM.

Problem

This problem did not exist before installing Windows 10.  I installed windows 10 on 4 computers.  These were fresh installs.  Deleting all previous programs.  On startup the computers fail to access the Internet.  Windows Network Diagnostics says I have a "problem with network adapter or access point".  For the first few months Network Diagnostics reset the network adapter.  This was inconvenient but I could access the Internet.  I installed Driver Booster and Driver Dr. Programs.  This was by suggestion from other forums.   Now on my newest, fastest, most critical work computer (Asus), I get "problem with network adapter or access point"  "not fixed".  I installed and ran Tweaking.com’s Windows Repair Free, twice.  Then, I installed Advanced SystemCare9.  It found 10,338 problems including 48 network problems.  After running that program I still have no Internet access and it takes over 10 minutes to start up and shutdown the Asus computer.  The log file from Windows Repair for the network is as follows:

Sucessfully reset the Winsock Catalog.
You must restart the computer in order to complete the reset.

Ok.

There's no user specified settings to be reset.

I hope I can find a solution to this problem.  I need to get back to work.
Thank you very much for your help.

I wasn't aware that Comodo came bundled with PrivDog - Sorry.

While there are multiple Google links to uninstall PrivDog, I've picked this one out as it illustrates removing bits from the registry as it has been known to come back after uninstalling it from Programs and Features - but disregard the bit about downloading Max Uninstaller.

http://maxuninstaller.com/howtouninstallguides/tips-to-uninstall-privdog/

As you have MBAM installed, in Settings/Detection and Protection use the dropdowns to change to Treat PUPs and PUMs as Malware and then run a scan.

General Computer Support / I have a problem (SOLVED)
« on: July 30, 2015, 04:00:21 pm »
When trying to open a .zip file in another forum, Windows asked me which program I wanted to use.

I first went to Default Programs/Associate files and .zip wasn't in the list to assign a default program.

There was also a Google link I came across (can't find it now) that had a .zip batch file for .zip but said to right click on it and select SaveAs which didn't give me that option.

When I downloaded it, it was being saved as a text file and opened as such which meant I couldn't use the Merge option.

I've also tried the elevated cmd - cmd /c assoc zip=CompressedFolder to no avail.

Went back and got the which program do you want to use etc. and I was able to add Windows Explorer to the list but when I went to open it after that, all I got was a jumping busy which pretty much froze the computer.

I was able to open Task Manager to end the many explorer.exes and iexplorer and instead of stopping the busy, ended up with a desktop devoid of everything except this jumping busy next to the cursor arrow and had to do a power shutdown to get out of it.

It's as if Windows doesn't know what a .zip is and may be because it isn't listed in the Associate files...

I think this started following one of the factory resets and it occurs on both my Toshiba Win 7 laptops - each having had more than one factory reset each.

The last factory reset on the other machine was done with a bought Toshiba OEM disk, so should really have been pristine.

A chkdsk /f and an offboot sfc /scannow came up clean.

I want to get this resolved so that I can move on and upgrade one of the machines to Win 10, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Shane,

Is it possible to review sent PMs on the forum as I've found I can only check the ones I've received - unless my eyes are failing me again :)

General Computer Support / BOOTMGR Missing

Hi Shane,

I passed on your link for the Vista SP2 ISO but when they tried it they got the title of the thread.

I was wondering if you have a machine to try it on or if you have another ISO source.

General Computer Support / (Solved) How do I get .bat file to run
« on: September 08, 2014, 04:47:43 pm »
I came across http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles-tutorials/netgeneral/Internet-Explorer-corrupted-fix.html and copied & pasted the batch commands in the article into Notepad - gave it a name and .bat as an extender, but I'm unable to execute it by the methods suggested in the article.

Safe Mode/Command Prompt doesn't recognize it as a valid command and Task Manager cannot find it even when I type in the full path for a new task.

Decided to stick it on a disk to see if it would execute when booted with it, but ImgBurn couldn't find it in My Docs and I could no longer see it listed either through the Browse, but it's still listed when I view My Docs normally.

Any ideas ?

General Computer Support / Windows Repair (All In One)
« on: July 05, 2014, 05:12:16 pm »
I'm new to this forum and not sure how to see if anyone else has had this or other problems after running the program in the thread title, but I've run this program with default settings on two Win 7 SP1 x64 bit laptops and on one it froze the system after the reboot and had great difficulty in establishing a Wireless connection.

I was eventually able to get into the Reliability history where it had a Critical Error of Windows Media Center Host Module Stopped and no answer as to why when checking for solutions.

The laptop has managed to repair itself and is now running okay as far as I can tell.

I'm not sure why in the forum rules it says that posts are not actively monitored when the program says to come to this forum for Feedback, but I'd appreciate it if someone did have an explanation for the Critical Error.
