Problem is solved!! Someone told me to do a reboot in Safe Mode and do a system restore. Luckily there was an automated system restore point from this morning, so I didn't have to think about changes in between. Phewwww, what a relief!

I can only guess what happened. In case anybody is interested, this is what I did today. This afternoon I installed an update for AnyVideoConverter and I had a funny feeling about it. Just too much was going on. So to get possible malware out I ran AdwCleaner. I had run AC this morning and it removed a registry key of a program I uninstalled the other day, so that was alright. So I knew that the registry keys AC came up with had to be of something today. I had also re-installed ESET online scanner and HitmanPro (don't ask, too long a story) but those are trusted programs. So the keys AC found had to come from this update. I let AC clean them and there was the reboot and then my keyboard was dead. So something happened to its drivers. Anybody for a solid explanation?

Thank you, Boggin, for your quick response. I was very stressed out from it.

Is there something I must do to check drivers or ports or anything? When I hooked everything up and opened several programs I had a freeze. Maybe the pc is a bit upset too. :)

General Computer Support / Re: Keyboard is not recognized, cannot login

I don't have a PS2 port and my keyboard has a usb connector, not a PS2 plug, if that is the right word. What now? I can buy that converter and borrow a keyboard with a PS2 plug. Is that an idea? Or are there converters for usb connector to ps2 plug? So that I can get access through  2 converters? Or: can I have a PS2 port built in?

My desktop pc doesn't recognize my keyboard anymore. Cannot login. Tested keyboard on laptop, no problem. Tried an old keyboard, nothing. Mouse works. Both are plugged in by USB cables. Tried different ports. Please help.

Just to make this issue clear to everybody else: you can change this setting yourself by going to your profile, choose Modify Profile and then Personal Messaging and tick the box to save your personal messages by default.

I didn't remember having this option. Been a while since I visited my basic settings. :)

Hey Julian, thanks a bunch for fixing this little annoyance! I took a look at my personal message page and the box is ticked by default now. Wonderful! Never underestimate what solving a small thing means. Now if only you, Shane and Boggin could exert your almost god power outside of the forum too......  :cheesy:

The reason I stick with you guys is that I never had a stupid or nasty response. And you know that they are common on other IT forums. Don't ask....

No, you definitely are the sweetest guys! It feels great to know that you are out there. <3

I still have my first PM in my outbox of PMs so I must have checked it then. I really have to check it every time I write a PM.

- But as long as the program defragments the majority of the files I wouldn't worry too much.

My thought exactly.

We're done with this one. Thanks guys!

En de hartelijke groeten terug! :cheesy:

It doesn't for me. Else I wouldn't have the issue because most of the times I did check it.

The default setting to save a copy of a personal message in one's outbox is to not save it. Could that become the opposite? I keep forgetting to check the box and sometimes I want to look back at what I wrote.

Yes, it did.

Right after I defragged with Windows I ran Defraggler's analysis as I forgot something I needed for my previous answer here and it showed that C: now has 3% fragmentation.   Are we rooting for Windows or for Piriform?  :cheesy:

I had taken a look at the files and they're all sorts of files, mostly from my antivirus/firewall program BullGuard and Adobe. Here are a few (sorry, the tabs didn't get copied):

I also looked in Piriform's forum and saw exactly the same problem......without an answer.

https://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=47497

So I ran defrag /c too. Maybe the simple answer to this is that Defraggler is the only program which lists undefragged files?

Yes, good idea. Then I will now uninstall HD Sentinel.

Have some more things to ask. You'll see.  :cheesy:

When I open the File list and do CTR A on the list and right click, I get the following options:

Defrag highlighted
Move highlighted to end of drive
Check highlighted
Save list to text file
Benchmark file

Yes, that's what I thought initially but your answer confused me.

Thanks Boggin! It seems we've managed that one nicely again. I assume the 99% cannot be made into 100%. I'm already VERY pleased with the 99%.

Or.......maybe I misunderstood and it's the number of files that were defragged and not the number that have to be but cannot.

How about that?

I defragged my C: partition with Defraggler. It says now that it has fragments and fragmented files and 0% fragmentation. That sounds odd to me. I've never seen this before. I ran the program for errors on C: but all was well. Is it okay like this?

Oh right, the registration thing. It isn't a window, it's a link. But I'll ignore it then. That's one question solved. One to go.

I just keep the .zip and file folders

I'm sorry, I don't understand which file you mean. Do you mean the setup.exe file?

I just close that register window.
What do you mean by this?

Please answer the other 2 questions.

No red buttons under S.M.A.R.T.

BTW, so no damage after three years of using the hybrid sleep state. Another proof that SSDs are strong!  :artist:

So the word wasn't "condition" but "health".

I looked around a bit but there's a bunch of information. I managed to change the language to English, so I can just give you a screenshot of the overview. I have a feeling you mean the text under the percentages.

At the top it says (still in Dutch) "unregistered version, please register", but I don't have to, right?

Boggin, I did the test with HD Sentinel and my SSD, internal HD and 2 external HDs came out 100% perfect! Except the SSD had 99% on condition (I'm not sure if condition is the right word, got the Dutch version although I clicked on English). Isn't that great?  :cheesy: After three years and so many problems?! We did a lot of good things, didn't we?

Is there anything you can come up with to check while it's still running today before I uninstall it? I saved the report but it's easier this way.

Before I forget, after uninstalling, do I have to keep both the setup file and the zip archive? Or only the setup.exe?

Thank you for your suggestion, Willy2! I'll have a look. O&O works fine with W7 and it really sped up my pc again now that I just defragged it.

I'm probably terribly biased because of all the problems I've had with Windows, but I'd rather work with a trusted 3rd party.

Thank you again, Boggin. I'll do that tomorrow. It's a shame though that O&O didn't work. I really liked using it.

General Computer Support / (Solved) Defrag program incompatible with W8.1
« on: January 08, 2017, 05:39:10 am »
Hello again,

I wanted to defrag my laptop (W8.1, shell W7) with O&O defrag free (edition 14.1) which I use on my desktop (W7) but it says it has compatibility issues. It says it can still be run but since I'll also be defragging the C: partition with Windows on it, I'm afraid to just use it.

I can download the defrag freeware edition from the O&O website anew but then I'd have to enter my e-mail address and I'd rather not. And it doesn't say there which version I'll get.  https://www.oo-software.com/en/free/download.html
Majorgeeks.com has the 14.1 edition.

Is this compatibility issue really a problem? And is the compatibility mode any good?

Thanks Boggin! Really good to know SSDs perform much better than is generally assumed.

So my feeling of staying with the third option was correct. :cheesy:
