Windows Update error 80073712
« on: May 25, 2013, 05:34:16 AM »
I get this error when trying to search for updates through Windows Update. The error occured after a virus attack on my computer (my antivirus suddenly deleted its self). I ran three different virus protection tools (ESET SS 6, Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool and Malwarebytes Antimalware). Kaspersky found the virus and deleted it, the other two reported nothing. I have searched the whole web, but nothing helped me solve this. If you have any idea how to solve this, please let me know. With the post you will find logs from the System Update Readiness Tool.

Yes, and I have to say it is a complete solution for many errors. But unfortunatly, it wont solve my problem. I also found out what this problem is about. It occurs when the sxs component store is corrupted. Can this be solved manually?

When sxs gets corrupt then your stuck. Your only option is a reinstall. I hate the winsxs folder because of this.

But thankfully you can do a repair install to fix it instead of a fresh install where you lose everything.

You didnt say what version of Windows you are on, so I will assume Windows 7.

First you will need a Windows 7 cd with SP1 already on it. You can get that here

And then just follow this guide

Shane, this sounds similar to needing to do a surface scan on the hard disk or
using that link I provided too do a complete chkdsk command from the install disk

I did a little research and I found out that the virus I got stuck with had this exact purpose, to corrupt the sxs. I found a thread in Toms hardware. There was a guy struggling with the same error. This error brings up another ten. We had exactly the same errors! Also, note that a repair install after the virus attack will not work. A clean install will do. Thank you for your support. Dont forget to check out the thread, that guy has some thoughts about what the problem would be.

Yeah, I can confirm; I get all those same errors too...
Did they ever figure out the root cause?

I hate that MS even decided on the winsxs folder. It will always grow and never shrink and once it is broken there is no way to repair it.

You would think MS would have a rebuild or repair tool for the winsxs folder, but of course they dont. I dont know where or how the info in the winsxs folder is stored, so I don't think I could even make a repair for it. If I could find where the data of what is in the winsxs folder is stored perhaps it could be rebuilt.
