event viewer came up but froze when I clicked in it. what does this mean

This means there is something seriously wrong with your system.

He won't contact you but will come onto the forum to have a look at your thread and offer his advice but with it being a weekend, you may have to wait a couple of days.

You haven't answered if the chkdsk reported any KBs in bad sectors.

Can you run a chkdsk /r and check again.

each time I have run chkdsk /f, I have see repaired bad reparse somethings.  I have never see bad sectors. Last night, I did a system restore.  I can now run dos batch files. I want to see if I can run tweaking.com.  The program is now running, and I am doing step 2, a pre-scan.  Ccleaner will now load and scan the registry.  There is still a program that I can't uninstaller: VueMinder.

I had considered a restore point but sometimes they can leave you in limbo, so decided against it, but glad yours have worked.

Most programs have their own Uninstaller, but can be difficult to uninstall when one or more of its files are open.

The workaround then is to try the uninstall in Safe Mode where those files will not be open.

Well at least that looks like progress.

That reparse point could be down to a Volsnap error but could take some finding in Event Viewer.

You can find if the program has fixed it by running the Pre-Scan again but as the target path is missing, then probably not.

Given the date of it I don't think that should be causing any problems if your problems don't date back to Dec. 2017.

Why did you initially run the repair program ?

I've removed your duplicate post about Vueminder.

When it's done repairing the reparse points, run the Pre-Scan again.

I am in safe mode, tweaking.com has run for 1 hr and 40 min, it is doing (or stuck on) step #5.  what should I do?  shut down the program or let it run??  If I shut it down, will it damage my computer?

ah. I just saw your post about running the reparse again.  Should I stop the program and do that?

I stopped the program, tried to run it again to get to fix reparses.  but the program got stuck loading on a .txt file.  I think it is pretty clear that stopping the program damages something.

When the program gets stuck then you can close it.

Can you use your restore points again and see if the program will open to run the Pre-Scan again.

The program does do an auto registry back up prior to running the repairs, but if it has become corrupt then it may need reinstalling.

Before running the program again, can you go into Event Viewer to see what the latest errors report.

You can post them in your reply any that seem relevant by after clicking on each, click on Copy/Copy details as text in the lower right pane then right click in the reply box and select Paste.

@Selster:
- Run Windows Repair again and make sure the program displays the commands it's executing. There's an option for that. It also means that WR is (a bit) slower but it could provide a clue where the program "gets stuck". And post that info here in this thread.
- Try something else first. Run repair #25 only and then try to run repair #5 again (with output enabled).

Would not go into safe mode (F8 repeatedly), went to check disc.
#1
6548 large file records processed
0 bad file records  processed
162 reparse records  processed
#2
correcting error in index $I30 for file 9954

Then booted to win 7.  Can not load tweaking.com.  Stuck on loading windows variables 71%, this time.  Will try to boot to safe mode.

Are you using an OEM branded machine or purpose built machine ?

When you say you were unable to get Windows Repair to run and are now running Repair #5 - how did you get the program to run ?

When you're done with Repair #5 and/if the program completes, perform a sfc /scannow to see what that reports.

If any of the missing files are identifiable to any services, you can reinstall the services from https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/236709-services-restore-default-services-windows-7-a.html

@Selster:
What kind of errors ? You can pause the output by pressing "Pause" and then make a screenshot

1. I left the machine running your step #5, all night.  This morning, it is still doing 1 of 3: repairing WMI.  There is no screen output so I do not know if the program is stuck in a loop or what.
2. What should I do?  Should I let it continue with #5, for today?  Or, should I stop your program and run sfc /scannow or run step #25 and pause the output when I see errors.  The errors in #25 were along the lines of could not find the file but repeated many times.  Previously, I ran sfc /scannow, a few times, and each time got all files are correct.
3.  So if I am missing a service, I can get it from the windows7 site, greate tip.
4. I have about 30 minutes before I need to leave, so hopefully you can get back to me.
Thank you, Steve

I don't know how to start windows recovery.  But got it to go there by turning off the machine, probably damaging something, so then I had a choice of either running recovery or booting normally.

I'm just running Repair #5 and it has sailed through it.

If you click on the main repairs window behind the grey one you should see activity on the CPU.

I just ran it in normal mode and now it's doing something with my Norton security.

You say you had a black screen so you couldn't see any output ?

Of those two boot choices I'd go for a normal start to see what you get.

I cannot read that output pic.

To view the chkdsk log go Start - type eventvwr and press enter.

Ensure Event Viewer (Local) is highlighted in the left pane - if it isn't then click on it.

When it has read the data and you can see Critical, Error etc. expand Windows Logs in the left pane.

Click on Application then on Action/Find in the top menu bar then type chkdsk or wininit into the Find box and press enter where you can read the log.

To copy & paste the log into the reply box, click on Copy/Copy details as text in the lower right pane then right click in the reply box and select Paste.

The reason I was asking about the type of computer is because I was thinking about a repair install, but you will need the product key which is on the COA sticker - usually on the underside.

I can supply you with a Win 7 x32 or 64bit SP1 install disk but would need to know which version of Win 7 you are using.
