I keep getting the code: 0x80070002 when I'm trying to update apps in the Microsoft store. I've tried multiple ideas from various articles and nothing seems to work. I've turned back on UAC and went back to using my Microsoft Login to sign into the computer (neither of which I really wanted to do) but neither of those changes had any effect. I did a repair installation of Windows 10 again with no effect.

Any ideas what else I should try?

Having read your thread in the Bleepingcomputer.com forum and other Google links on this error and if you have also tried those, should it be an Internet problem, open a Command Prompt (Admin) and enter these cmds then check after the the reboot.

netsh winsock reset

shutdown /r /t 00

Thanks for the idea about a different direction, unfortunately it didn't help.

As you can see from what was suggested over there (I actually had tried most of the suggestions previously) I've tried about everything imaginable and nothing seems to help. I really don't want to blow everything away and start over with a new configuration, I have AutoCAD in several auxiliary programs used for design work that are very intricate to reinstall on a system. On top of that I'm disabled and have to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking software to control my computer. It works great I can do everything using it that I could previously however, when you're doing a complete scratch installation on your computer it takes a while before you get to a point where you can use it (or even Windows recognition for that matter).

I'll keep plugging away, I know sooner or later I'll run into something that solves the problem. Meanwhile, fortunately the only thing it affects is a Microsoft store and apps from it and forcefully none of those are things I use on a regular basis.

Have you tried this troubleshooter to see if it's an install problem -

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/17588/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed-or-removed
No I hadn't tried that troubleshooter. I had run the troubleshooter that you find in Control Panel but not this one. However I just ran it and it didn't find anything and the problem still exists....

The fact that you've done a repair install and troubleshooters haven't found anything amiss would suggest the problem could lay with what you have on the computer.

Had you downloaded/installed anything immediately or recently prior to this happening ?

I assume you have already tried a clean boot or your restore points ?

Unfortunately, the store doesn't fully open in Safe Mode with Networking which would isolate all 3rd party programs, so a clean boot is the next best option.

While you say you don't or rarely use those apps - it's annoying that something doesn't work as it should.

I haven't noticed it from occurring for a while so I don't have any restore points going back far enough. I did try a clean boot however like you suggested, and it also didn't make any difference.

It looks like I'm going to have to do a complete reinstall.

It's been a while since I updated anything in the store so there are actually 33 apps that the store says need to be update. I was actually trying to install a new app (ear trumpet) when I first noticed the problem.

Can you create another admin account to see if that works ?

If that doesn't work or it would be too much work transferring over to that account, create a system image onto external media then uninstall one of the apps to see if it can be installed afresh.

I'm going to try this next. I ready have a system image that I get a little while ago so I have a good image to revert to. Earlier I went back to an image I had from March but even then I still had the brain problem so the problem has existed for a while.

I came across this article on another forum - https://care.king.com/en/candy-crush-jelly-saga/cant-get-your-games-to-load-on-windows-10-check-this-out

While it deals with not being able to load apps - it has steps for setting the updates to automatic which may help.

Thanks for the articles and ideas.  I checked in my update was actually set for automatic in the window store.  Interestingly I also checked and all of mine Windows 10 system updates are fine and up-to-date, it's just the updates for items in the store that are not working.

These following cmds are really for Windows Update problems but could be related.

Open a Command Prompt (Admin) then copy & paste the cmds en bloc where they will auto run except perhaps for the last one where you will need to press enter.

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

Then enter shutdown /r /t 00 to effect an immediate reboot and then see how things go.

The SoftwareDistribution cmd will remove your update history but won't affect installed updates.

Reversing the cmds will reinstate the previous versions of Catroot2 and Software Distribution folders.

BTW - Did you try the fresh app install ?

EDIT - I'm shooting off for a few hours but will be back later.

Thanks for the additional ideas.  I ran through all the commands and the only thing that can function as expected was that when I tried to stop msiserver came back and said it was not running.  When I started yet farther down the command list it did start okay however as I rebooted and the store didn't work again I checked and it wasn't running then either.  I checked the "Services" and it was set to automatically start which is what I believe is supposed to be.  I'm wondering if this somehow may be associated with my problem?

The msiserver is the Windows Installer service and that is default set to manual and not generally showing as Started.

Which service are you referring to that is set as Started and Auto ?

I can't find anything in Services that relates to the MS Store other than one for the store installer service and its default is also Manual and not showing as started.

If it is any of those listed in this article, you can click on them to reinstall.

I actually used the Tweaking.com Windows Repair AIO to do a complete resetting of all service settings.  That had no effect on the issue either.  I found another article about how to remove and reinstall the Windows store went through that without any problems but I didn't have any affect either.

You haven't answered which service was set to Started and Auto.

If you ran all of the repair program repairs then it will probably have taken out your Windows Update.

Can you go Start - Settings - Update & Security then see if a manual check for updates will work or produce an error.

If it produces an error message then run the program again in Safe Mode with Networking then click on Backup Tools and select Restore for the Registry back up.

Click on Restore Registry then use the dropdown to select the back up then click on Restore Now and check your Windows Update again.

If it hasn't reinstated it, then use the link I've posted for Win 10 Services and reinstall BITS and the Windows Update services.

msiserver is the service I was referring to earlier that was automatic and started.  I did a complete reset of all services using Tweaking.com AIO and now it shows manual and that started.

I went and did a manual check for updates and everything worked fine.  Also if I use winver HFI system is updated to 1803- 17 134.112 which I believe is the latest version available for normal release.

It's good that the program didn't screw your updates as it has done for some on here including myself.

Can you try the App update again and then go into Event Viewer and check the time stamped errors to see if there are any with the same time stamp that could be associated with the 0x80070002 one that you are already getting.

I didn't get any errors in the event log when I tried to update the Microsoft Store, however when looking at the event log I noticed that I got quite a few various errors when I booted up this morning.

I'm attaching a copy of those errors to see if you see anything that might because the problem in those errors.

Do you get the same errors after a shutdown and then a restart ?

I'm not sure the delay in connecting to the Internet could be a DNS issue but I use Level3's DNS servers.

You probably know how to do this but I'll run through it anyway.

Go Start - ncpa.cpl and press enter.

Right click on whichever adapter you are using and select Properties.

I have the box for (TCP/IPv6) unchecked as it can cause problems.

Click on (TCP/IPv4) then on the Properties button.

Click on the button to Use the following DNS servers then type 209.244.0.3 in the top row of boxes then tab down and type 209.244.0.4 in the lower row.

Check the box to Validate settings upon exit - OK - Close - where the troubleshooter will start and should report no problems.

Depending upon whether there is a repetition of those errors on restart, you may need to unregister/re-register the time server.

This is done from an admin cmd prompt with these cmds -

net stop w32time

w32tm.exe /unregister

w32tm.exe /register

net start w32time

shutdown /r /t 00

Then check Event Viewer after the restart.

I can't find anything on the MS Windows Host Network service error but changing the DNS servers can resolve a number of problems.
