Depending upon what Shane can do with those, for me this is looking more like a factory reset or a repair install, but the latter for Vista can be a bit involved if you don't have an install disk that doesn't include SP2 http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

Doing an offboot sfc /scannow after booting up with the SP1 bootable disk could save you some time on this.

After booting up with the install disk and selecting Repair your Computer, navigate to the Recovery Environment and select Command Prompt.

Enter bcdedit |find "os device" (that's a pipe symbol before find)

Using whichever letter it gives for partition enter, (assuming C: ) sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows

When done, enter exit to close the command window, remove the DVD and select Restart and see what you get after that.

You may like to post what the sfc reports.

I'll leave it to Shane to go into the nitty gritty of this but when any GPU goes over 70 degrees it should be a cause for concern - when did you last give it a good clean out and what are the CPU temps like and is your PSU up to running that GPU ?

I tend to use HWMonitor as my laptop's BIOS doesn't give info on temps http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Just because it's a new GPU it may not have the latest drivers and running AMD's auto detect will tell you if there are any newer http://www.amd.com/en-us/markets/game/downloads

Thanks for your help with the cmd Boggin, much appreciated.
I havent downloaded anything for some time other than images,, but I noticed the 'new' missing after I deleted google chrome

That not may have been when it happened but after checking the registry keys as Shane has just suggested, then trying a restore point prior to uninstalling Chrome may/not produce anything.

Off to roost.

OK - if it was known when this first occurred (and not just found out) the restore points could resolve.

Micky, have you downloaded any programs recently or since you last used the new folder option ?

I don't know if your .zip did this Shane, but a Google for the problem came up the solution of recreating the Public key  for one user http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/252277-44-folder-problems

Thanks Boggin, I tried using the command prompt but now I have to find out how to make my pc realise I am the admin. When I work it out and rediscover where I found the command prompt I will get back to you with the results,,, ta for your time, Im grateful.
Dont laugh,,,I saved a bunch of new folders to a stick drive on my other pc (laptop) and downloaded them to the main pc,,,,,,,,it actually worked
Not ideal,, but has got me a bit further with what I need to do

If there's ever anything you are unsure how to do, then Google it for your system.

e.g.

how do i run command prompt as administrator in vista and you'll probably see a link that will give you http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-elevated-command-prompt/

That's how most of us have learned

To access Event Viewer go Start - type eventvwr then press enter.

You will have to wait for it to read the logs and then you will be presented with a list for Critical, Error and Info etc.

Hopefully you won't have any Critical but click on Error then on View All Instances of This Event in the right pane then look for errors with the date and time stamp when you had the problems.

Clicking on those will produce a brief explanation of what has stopped etc. with an Event ID.

If you find any applicable then click on Copy in the lower right pane and select Copy Details as Text and then you can paste it in the Reply box and Shane should probably be able to help you with those.

There's a blue Online help link you can click on which may or not give more info/solution.

Reliability history may also have something on this and is accessed by going Start - type reliability (or part of) then press enter as View reliability history will be highlighted.

Clicking on any red crosses or info for each date that has either of these will produce a report with a blue link for more info.

This article will give you more info on using the Event Viewer in Win 7 although some may apply to XP/Vista (don't know Win 8) http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/use-windows-7-event-viewer-to-track-down-issues-that-cause-slower-boot-times/

Have you tried opening a command prompt as an administrator and entering the command chkdsk /f which will run on the next reboot after typing y and pressing enter, or you could just enter chkdsk which is a read-only mode and that will tell you if there are any corrupt files or bad sectors and will tell you to run the chkdsk /f if it finds any corrupt files.

To close the command window if the just the read-only mode has been used and it doesn't find any corruption, type exit then press enter.

You should have the UAC enabled.

Bump - and will stay logged in.

Just another thing to try before going the whole hog with the repair install and that is to boot up with the Win 7 SP1 install disk - select Repair your Computer then navigate to the Recovery Environment and select Command Prompt.

You can change the Boot order by tapping F12 as you switch on, select CD/DVD - insert the disk and press enter.

You will be momentarily prompted to press any key to boot from CD/DVD.

At the command prompt type bcdedit |find "osdevice" and press enter (that is the pipe symbol before find)

Using whichever letter it gives for the partition enter (assuming C: ) sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows

When the scan is complete let us know what it reports and type exit - press enter to close the window - remove the disk - click on Restart then try Windows Updates again.

This machine should have a recovery partition and as shell24 is going to back up personal files, then perhaps it would be better to factory reset it, although would have to reinstall any programs installed since new and the product keys for any paid for programs will be displayed in Belarc Advisor as well as the Windows product key http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

BTW Willy2 - ironically WU doesn't work in Safe Mode with Networking as it doesn't load any services it considers would make the computer unsafe.

Fine - Thanks.

I'll start checking in from around 10.00pm here which should be around 2.00pm for you if the forum time stamps are your local time.

It's just turned midnight here so if you could make it 30 mins - 1hr earlier that would be fine but I wouldn't want to start much after midnight.

I'm turned 66 now but I don't tax myself as much these days

I used to pull all nighters when I was working on a BASIC program and eventually made myself ill - so don't over do it.

If you're fit then you can hook up now if you want.

It's looking like the Media Center Module is stopping or not starting on any boot, so WR must have done something.

When I was using the affected laptop this afternoon, decided to have a look in the reliability history and saw reports of the Media Host Module being stopped long after I last run Windows Repair and after the laptop had unfroze and appeared to be running okay.

The Event Viewer has some errors that I would like you to look at when we can arrange a hook up, but one of them suggested it could be because of a HDD problem so that laptop is currently undergoing a HDDScan3 surface read test - although the S.M.A.R.T. came back with all green "lights".

The surface read test has been running for about an hour and a half so far, so not sure when that will complete - using other laptop at present and its Reliability history has no reported faults after running WR, so whatever is going wrong is laptop specific.

There must be something different between the two as Old Timers TFC will crash this laptop but run okay on the other one.

It's looking like there is an 8hr time difference as it's 5.15pm here when the time stamp of this post is showing as 09.13am.

You would only be able to see what I'm experiencing by running the program again for the freeze but the laptop appears to be functioning now as it should after it got over the freeze.

I'm in the n.e of the UK so I don't know what the time difference is, but I think it could be in the region of ~8hrs.

I'm going to be out most of today (UK time) but when I'm able to I'll bump the thread to see if you are online then perhaps we could arrange something.

I was a bit concerned that log was saying that if parts of WMI were rebuilt in future, certain aspects wouldn't be included ??

I've seen the Attach/Browse box at the bottom but having placed it in there by using the Browse to point to it, it doesn't show up when I preview the post - do I need to do anything else ?

The .zip is just 7KB

I have no objections to you having a look around with Teamviewer but it's after 01:30 here in the UK and I have to be up and about and out in the morning.

I think if you have a look at the WMI repair report you will probably see what is causing the problem when it is deleting registry keys that perhaps it shouldn't.

I'm a lot later running this than I intended but it froze the laptop again and with the same error.

The chkdsk check reported errors so ran the repair option which it whipped through the three stages but as I'd done a chkdsk /r yesterday which found nothing wrong, I checked Event Viewer which gave the same but the Logs that the program produced warned about false error reporting and the program chkdsk log reported a corrupt Bitmap.

This could be an error of the program.

I think the freeze occurs because Windows is repairing the registry during the boot process because the WMI repair deleted a number of keys.

The laptop seems to have recovered itself but I had some problems getting Norton 360 to work again

I had zipped the WMI log but am unable to find how to attach it to the post after placing it in the Attach: box.

Rather than copying & pasting such a large file, would you please advise on that and I can stick it in my next post.

Yes, I'll give that a go but it won't be until tomorrow sometime - getting on in the day now here in the UK.

I'd created my own restore point as well as using the program to back up as well and had disabled the AV until the next reboot and while I have the same programs on here as I do with the other laptop, there were no after effects with that one - so thought there must have been a glitch.
